I hope one day we get footie board here, fuck it call it /sc/ - Soccer, I don't care... I think it would be better for both footie and other sports.

At times I want to be able to discuss 2nd tier footie, or other competitions like Brazilian state league and regionals, without sharing the conversation with 1st tier and continental footie talks.

So the best compromise I can think of right now is a general exclusively for 2nd tier footie, but since I don't think there is a single 2nd tier league that can justify its own general, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a combined one. One where we can talk about Serie B, Championship, 2.Bundas, the other Serie B, La Liga2, USL, etc...

Thoughts? Also, I was thinking of calling it /2tier/ but Idk

Besides that, talk about interesting stuff happening in your country's 2nd tier in this thread too

Anon, I just googled best 2nd tier leagues, copied the first few logos that appeared and made the image until it was a neat rectangle. Every single 2nd tier competition can be discussed here. Including of course La B
>>
>>154299685
Brazil has 4 national tiers with promotion and relegation. The top 3 levels have 20 teams each with 4 pro/rel spots, the 4th level is more regionalized. Our 2nd tier isn't far behind the 1st tier, and I would risk saying that the best teams in BR Serie B are about the same level of the worst teams in BR Serie A.

State leagues are separate leagues from the national one, but the qualification for BR Serie D is based on your state ranking.
>>
USL mentioned

iirc USL was trying to get 1st tier status, so Idk how that would work, but for now it makes sense to add it here

I've watched a few matches on youtube actually. But that was because there were no matches from our league at the time.

I also think this general could get some anons to watch some leagues they would never do by themselves. So it's something I'm also excited. Fucking /copalib/ got me to watch a Peruvian cup match once and it was actually neat

Friendly reminder that we might be looking at a Red Star promotion this season.
Meaning that in two seasons, we could have jumped from "Paris is the only european capital with just one club" to three parisian clubs in Ligue 1

Is the red star related to communism at all or just a coincidence?
>>
>>154300021
Red Star's name actually predates the use of the red star as a symbol by communists, that's how old the club is.
It IS a coincidence that it was named that and was the workers' club around Paris as opposed to the posh clubs founded by english expats.

>>154300102
IIRC Red Star and Le Havre are two of the oldest still active clubs in the world (although I think Le Havre had to be re-founded after a bankrupcy in one of these cases where the club legally stops existing for a day so ownership transfer or the creation of a new legal entity by the same people can be processed, I don't remember the exact details for this case)

Derby have had a great season considering we stayed up on the last day of last season. And the journey back from almost liquidating and league one. However we cannot kid ourselves as this Championship has been pretty poor. Next year you will have Burnley, West Ham/Spurs, Norwich and Sheff Utd looking much stronger and Southampton/Ipswich/Boro if they don't go up.

Unfortunately we have too many injuries right now to make a strong push into the play-offs, but you never know.

COME ON YOU RAMS!!!

>I'll never see my club in the first division again because of the shit format and you have to suck Tapia's ball so he rigs it for you
Honestly it wouldn't be that bad if we had the old 2011/2012 format cause it was comfy but having 40 teams in La B is such a shitshow. I can't wait to get eliminated from the world cup by Argelia so the fucking president fucks off already
Btw OP I like the idea but needs a better name

We're shitting the bed and might fall out of the playoffs. Huge game on Tuesday night were we can relegate Leicester to League One

Overall though it's been a great season despite having a transfer embargo. Sergej Jakirović has been a good manager and the embargo meant we had to be shrewd with transfers instead of buying Turkish league shitters for too much because of our crazy Turkish owner.

Their benevolent owner died in a helicopter crash leaving the stadium, and his son has fucked up. Despite having a load of players from the PL their attitudes have been awful for a relegation scrap.

They got deducted 6 points for breaking the profit and losses rules and their heads have gone.

Not paying other clubs what we owed them for loan and transfer fees. Our current owner Acun Ilıcalı is a Turkish TV mogul and a bit erratic and this was the culmination of it.

Just no. It's not worth it because of the 4CC already. /sp/ belongs together, the inter-sports banter is too important to abandon

As with many 2nd tiers, we've got a lot of chaos especially in the lower half of the table. Like ten clubs are battling relegation, Fortuna Düsseldorf currently are on a streak of five Ls in a row and look to be the most prominent victim of relegation as of now. But it's impossible to say what else is happening
On the other side of the table, the village club of Elversberg (from a town of 15,000) currently occupies 3rd place (the playoff spot), followed by traditional "big name" Hannover 96. >Schalke are first, eternal 2nd tier powerhouses Paderborn are second

The Premier League only run the Premier League, it broke away from the rest of The Football League (now the EFL) in 1992. EFL runs Championship, League One, League Two.

They had different sets of rules around club sustainability and spending.
>>
>>154301834
This is true. When you go up as an unfashionable club it's kind of miserable.

You go from local media and decent away fans from "proper" clubs, to being scrutinised by clueless "Big 6" pundits, being forgotten on Match of the Day, and daytripper plastics and vlogging zoomers.
>>
>>154301745
>SOVL
Elversberg are a bit controversial. Many traditionalists dislike them because they only rose to relevancy recently, and they have a pretty big investor causing their success. But performance-wise, you cannot argue with them ... and they are not as much of hardcore sellouts as Leipzig, Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen
>Growing up I thought Schalke was elite... Are they just an yoyo club now?
Schalke are obviously still a large club. Big clubs suffering from massive incompetence is a very prominent feature of German football: Hamburg, Köln ... and until recently also Frankfurt and Stuttgart
Schalke almost had to consider relegation to the 3rd tier last season, their last Bundesliga season was in 22/23, when they got relegated right after promotion. So this is their third season in the 2nd tier. You could argue this means they are currently not even a yoyo club
They've got financial problems, but they've begun to figure out how to not be super retarded recently. It seems like they'll manage to get promoted, but the Bundesliga might be a big challenge for them in their current form as a club in total. They obviously have the long-term potential to actually leave a mark there, though
>>
>>154300510
Sounds like cope from teams that have little or no story in the first division when the current format is as simple as it gets with the amounts of teams(too many but it'd be nonsensical for there to be less teams than LPF), the only thing that's nonsense is how the teams are distributed in the two groups. And the truth is that the real mess in the argentine football pyramid begins at the third division, something that has NEVER been close to be fixed.

That's not a bad idea either... All South American leagues are talked in /copalib/, and mls and ligamx have their own threads, so that would mostly be about other European leagues, Africa and Asia... Interesting

>>154301834
I understand the feel. My team has been in Serie B since forever and I don't think they would do that well in Serie A, at the same time there is all kinds of fuckery going on there, so I'm not that mad whenever we miss promotion (which we never had)

>>154301871
Makes sense. Brazilian teams have been trying to create a league à la Premier League for a while now, but the plan is to cover both Serie A and Serie B, and maybe even Serie C, since they all have the same format (C has a similar but not the exact same), and all of them have traditional teams. Has the EPL ever talked about the possibility of creating a 2nd level or integrating Championship? Idk

Hey, it could been worse... >Wolfsburg? I thought they were sovl because of Grafite... :( What happened?
They have always been despised by the vast majority of fans. People did like Grafite and Dzeko, but it never extended to the entire club. Wolfsburg are 100% owned by VW, the entire city of Wolfsburg is pretty much owned by VW. It's known as a very boring and overall irrelevant place. German football fans tend to be very much against clubs not being fan-owned, and Wolfsburg is one of the clubs not adhering to this standard. They are an exception to the otherwise strict 50+1 rule - so many fans hate them for that, as the club receives up to 100 million from VW per year (plus VW outbalances financial losses of the club, which regularly are very high) and thus has a very expensive "premium" squad despite the club itself not having a lot of pull. Their attendance is one of the worst in the league, general interest outside of the city of Wolfsburg is very low. They have basically no history beyond being VW's toy
And since VW itself is struggling financially now, some people are additionally pissed that the company fires factory workers to save money while still financing a very expensive club that basically no one really likes. And the payoff for all of that money is minimal, they've got one of the most expensive squads of the league and haven't achieved anything of note for years
Casual fans don't care about them at all, organized fans hate them. The club simply occupies a spot it cannot reach on its own, and in a very inefficient manner. Many fans want them gone asap

Damn, so they are basically a RedBull club, but local... That's much worse than I thought, damn. How come they were able to get around 50+1? They were owners beforehand? Can't the league do something about it?

Also, have the clubs who follow the 50+1 rule ever hinted or attempted a "coup", like "you guys need to fix this shit or we are leaving and making our own league"? Or is that just not realistic from a financial standpoint?
>>
>>154302229
>how do the top half of 2.Bundas and the bottom half of 1.Bundas compare?
Hard to say in detail and for sure
2nd Bundes is called the "strongest 2nd tier in the world" here, which is of course partially a marketing stunt. There are many traditionally big clubs in the 2nd tier, and they are quite good all in all. But modern football is so finance-focused and the difference in sponsorships and TV money is so high between 1st and 2nd tier ... you'd normally expect the Bundesliga member to win, of course. The relegation playoffs are quite telling in this regard
2nd Bundes is quite balanced from top to bottom. And once your average smaller Bundesliga side, like Bochum, gets relegated, they often get whacked in the 2nd tier. But if you're a Bundesliga member for two or more years, you can have a much larger budget than any 2nd tier member

The difference is not as stark as in the Premier League, where the yoyo effect is much stronger and the financial gap is much larger ... but it could be more balanced. Especially when you realize that many 2nd tier clubs like Hertha, Kaiserslautern, Hannover are historically bigger and stronger than many bottom 1st tier clubs like Mainz, Augsburg, Union
>>
>>154302274
To be fair Tapia didn't create that though, the current format isn't too different from what it's been most of its history even when it was called Torneo Argentino A, its evolution has been hillarious it's had as much as 120 teams and as little as 16 and then stabilized back to 30-40 teams. At that level having teams divided by geographical groups isn't the problem but having uneven groups and the fact that the format consists of a million rounds that don't make sense makes the whole setup completely retarded. Also again that it isn't the only third tier league...
>>154302287
Right, although calling it that is somewhat bogus because if you like that the teams from that side you'd find that the distinction is nonsensical when you have teams from Rosario, Santa Fe, Junin, Zárate, along other places, basically cherrypicked clubs from places that aren't AMBA, which probably made sense in the 50s or 60s but not in 2026, also funny thing in the TFA you have Atlético Escobar which is a club from AMBA but ended up there because like most clubs in the country(and really the way it's everywhere and that should be the norm for any club in Argentina) had to begin at a regional league and climb through the divisions. Ultimately the issue with the 1st and 2nd divsion is that there're too many teams(and that's merely the surface) but the mess with the 3rd division and below is of a completely different nature.
>>
>>154302306
If Milei doing "anything" at all is the alternative then we're done for. Also the Torneo Federal A(formerly Torneo Argentino A, formerly Torneo del Interior) began in 1986.
>>
>>154302342
That's cool, we have a lot in common in that regard. There are many traditional teams in our 2nd and 3rd tiers, and our 2nd tier is pretty balanced and not too far behind the 1st tier. Sometimes I prefer watching it too, it seems that overall organization is more of a factor than money than in the 1st tier.

I actually think 2.Bundas has a strong argument for best 2nd tier actually, I think only it, Championship and BR Serie B are in this discussion. Yours is very technical and organized, Championship is very fun to watch and BR Serie B is very competitive and traditional, its pretty much an extension of A. I feel like La Liga 2 and Serie B suffer much of the same problems of their 1st tier, but this could be a biased view.

There are four big objects of hate that got around 50+1: Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim, Leipzig

Leverkusen and Wolfsburg basically occupy the same spot, but in different ways. They are owned by Bayer and VW respectively, but the clubs are older than the 50+1 rule in its current form, and so is the involvement of the companies. But they were not always propped up the way we know it today: these clubs started as recreational teams for factory workers and thus always received support from the companies - but it was small and "for fun". But the companies eventually realized that they can push their brand in a big stage by pumping money into these clubs.
There's a backdoor in the rules that states that being a "reliable support to a club for >20 years" is enough to open a path to club ownership - convincing the few "fans" is easy in such a situation. That's how VW and Bayer made it
Interestingly, Bayer Leverkusen - while unpopular - is much more efficiently run than VfL Wolfsburg. And they also have much stronger fan identity. Some people tolerate Leverkusen because of that, but Wolfsburg is super unpopular

There have never been threats of creating an own league. It's unrealistic. But there are complaints, and there is pressure to change rules. Recently, German courts have pointed out that having such a two-tiered system is unfair

>>
>>154302446
Hoffenheim are a tiny village club that you only saw in the low amateur tiers, regional football with the local lads. But they also happened to be the childhood club of Dietmar Hopp, the man behind SAP. Hopp is a billionaire and decided to financially support them. Giving money to local amateur clubs is obviously not exactly regulated. Hopp was eventually allowed to take control of the club because of that 20 year rule. He invested >500 million in total, can't say for sure. But the club itself obviously only has very few fans and no tradition whatsoever. Other fans are mad at them for having that financial advantage. Hopp has returned his shares by now, so Hoffenheim technically adheres to 50+1 ... but Hopp still gifts them millions whenever they are in trouble

Hopp also originally planned to fuse multiple local clubs in the region under the name of the biggest city in the region (Heidelberg, Germany's biggest city with basically zero football legacy whatsoever). It's quite telling that even in Heidelberg, Hoffenheim has basically no fan presence despite being relatively successful

Their stadium is very empty, in even in good seasons. Traditional powerhouses coming there regularly fill >50% of the seats there because local interest is so low

So we all here agree that 2nd tier derbies are always better than the ones in first division? Or is there any country where this isn't the case?
>>
>>154299620
ADO Den Haag and SC Cambuur promoted this season to the Eredivisie. ADO also became champions. ADO is back to the first-tier after 5 seasons, Cambuur is back after 3 seasons.

Willem II, De Graafschap, Almere City, RKC Waalwijk and Roda JC qualified for the play-offs. Willem II and De Graafschap for the 2nd Round, Almere, RKC and RJC for the 1st Round. The final play-off spot is decided coming Friday and the contenders are:
>FC Den Bosch (through league position)
>Vitesse (through period championship)

The only way for Vitesse to qualify for the play-offs is if they beat Cambuur and either ADO loses to Den Bosch or Willem II loses to FC Dordrecht. Because Willem II and ADO are already period champions, Vitesse just needs to be second place to guarantee a play-off position.

Funnily enough, FC Den Bosch can guarantee itself a play-off position if it allows ADO to beat them - as long Willem II doesn't lose to Dordrecht.

So an interesting position for the final play-offs spot of the season in the KKD. The No. 16 of the Eredivisie will face the winner of the KKD play-offs.

I'll add more: Their great record caused too much debt in its day, and staying at first division was slowly becoming too much to maintain. At the team, trainers entered and left every month or so, causing an inestability that further doomed things too.

When they got relegated, an obsession to return to primera filled their very being, and so they got even more debt to do so. Returning once more to segunda, after bleeding out the last coffers, caused a fatal wound that they just couldn't heal from, so they have been stuck in a limbo of massive debt for more than a decade now.

Analysis for the qualified teams:
>Willem II
Relegated last year as 16th placed in the Eredivisie after losing the play-off finals to Telstar. Was for the last 30 years a regular in the mid to low tiers of the Eredivisie, with 4 relegations and 3 promotions in the last 15 years.
Was a favorite for the top 2 spots, but fell short halfway. If they achieve promotion, it will be the club's 8th promotion to the first tier in club history.

>De Graafschap
Been playing in the second tier ever since their relegation in 2019 due to losing the play-off final to Sparta Rotterdam. One of the biggest yo-yo clubs of the country.
Always tailed the top 2 but never could catch up to ADO and Cambuur. If they achieve promotion, it will be the club's 10th promotion to the first tier in club history, and the second-most promoted club in Eerste Divisie history.

>Almere City
Relegated last year as 18th directly to the second tier.
The youngest professional club in Dutch football, Almere steadily grew to a strong mid-table play-off contender with potential for more until their first promotion in 2023.
If they achieve promotion, it will be the club's 2nd promotion to the first tier in club history.

>RKC Waalwijk
Relegated last year as 17th directly to the second tier. An Eredivisie low-tier mainstay for 2 decades until its evolution to a yo-yo club after relegating in 2008.
Started strong this season, before collapsing in the 2nd Period and rebounding by the 3rd period. If they achieve promotion, it will be the club's 2nd promotion to the first tier in club history.

>Roda JC
Relegated in 2018 as 16th placed by losing the play-off semi-finals to Almere City. Formerly a stable regular midcard in the Eredivisie for 40 years, their relegation in 2014 started a financial and on-field downward spiral Roda hasn't recovered from since.
If they achieve promotion, it will be the club's 3nd promotion to the first tier in club history.

While nowadays their economy is better , thanks to the new investments, they have been struggling severely these last years, and after barely staying in second division this previous season, they are really, really biting the edge of the stair this year.

Recently bought by the MBappé family who turn out to be pretty bad at running anything other than down the left flank.

Nîmes is just its own unique embarrassment because it's not just the covid+mediapro double whammy, it's not chinese ownership, instead it's local ownership tanking the club almost on purpose out of pettiness because the supporters and the city weren't grateful enough that he paid off the debts once.

The whole "each quarter season has a winner who goes to the playoffs" in Eerste Divisie is very strange

Heerenveen came like 16th in 1988, got promoted, and have never been relegated since lel
>>
>>154312646
As i said, league of ireland. That this is your best option also shows why its rough to choose a league based on criteria like yours. Or that its rough to try and become fan of a league in the first place. I'm not a "fan" of first (or second) bundas even if i watch them for teams that partake

GOOD NEWS for Spurs loanee Yang Min-hyeok who had a burgeoning spell in the Championship at Portsmouth before his club decided he would somehow get more gametime at top-of-table Coventry City and has since made just three appearances since January. Spurs will be needing Championship players next season anyway.
>>
>>154313062
The quarter season championship is very stupid because it literally rewards laziness and incompetence.

You could get a great period, win the championship, qualify and just sit on your ass.

I still remember in 2013/14 when Sparta got the 2nd quarter, then just shit the bed for the second half of the season with only 2 wins, place 16th and reached the play-off finals, only to lose to FC Dordrecht.

At the very least, it does keep the play-offs interesting ngl (the best thing about Dutch football)

Hmm, I think doing both in the same general would be a bit much, no? I'd be up to try though. I just think if we go for a more general approach then 2nd tiers will be ignored due to people talking about good leagues that don't have their own general like Eredivisie. But we could certainly try for a while and if it doesn't work out we could make 2 generals
> /2tier/ (or a better name, pls recommend)
> /non-top5/ (or a better name, pls recommend)

Also, I was thinking of a way of pushing this idea a bit further, in a way to gather a bit more attention to these leagues. So I was thinking of doing a weekly 2nd tier webm thread too, that could also be done for a non top 5.

Also help, I'm not good with names kek

Yes, FC Den Bosch will qualify for the play-offs if they lose to ADO Den Haag. ADO already promoted and Willem II already qualified for the play-offs, so Vitesse will get the last play-off ticket if they are in the Top 2 of the 4th Quarter.

So as it goes:
>Den Bosch wins; Vitesse wins; Willem II wins
Vitesse will be in the Top 2 of the 4th Quarter and get the play-off ticket
>Den Bosch wins; Vitesse loses; Willem II wins
Den Bosch will go to the play-offs due to its league position.
>Den Bosch loses; Vitesse wins; Willem II loses
Vitesse will be in the Top 2 of the 4th Quarter and get the play-off ticket
>Den Bosch loses; Vitesse wins; Willem II wins
Den Bosch will go to the play-offs due to its league position.
>Den Bosch wins; Vitesse ties; Willem II wins or ties
Vitesse will be in the Top 2 of the 4th Quarter and get the play-off ticket
>Den Bosch ties; Vitesse ties; Willem II wins/ties/loses
Den Bosch will go to the play-offs due to its league position.
>Den Bosch loses; Vitesse wins; Willem II ties
Vitesse will be in the Top 2 of the 4th Quarter and get the play-off ticket

Den Bosch has a 42.85% chance to qualify, while Vitesse has a 57.15% chance to qualify.

The odds are in Vitesse's favor. So not only does Den Bosch HAVE to lose, Willem II MUST win as well in this scenario. While for Vitesse, all they have to do is win the final game.

Guys, what about /wl/ - World Leagues?

In this case, as I mentioned in a previous post, we'll try to combine the 2nd tier general idea with the non top 5 league idea at least initially, if it doesnt work out we can just split as both ideas are good imo

Any idea?

i think a general for all leagues that don't get a general (so leliga/eplel/bundas/pizza A/leligue + all of conmebol premieres due to /copalib/) would make sense, including lower divisions of the previously mentioned leagues as well
issue with that is that it might muddle the waters too much by trying to cover too much ground and lose focus, but if they were separate the threads likely won't survive
maybe calling it something like /2/+/alt/ - Lower divisions and alternative leagues

>Does that include womens football?
OP here, I wouldn't have a problem with that either, but some could argue that's essentially another sport. But then again, there is no reason why we can't try that for a few threads and see how it goes
>>
>>154350934
The second tier in Dutch football - the Eerste Divisie - is divided in 4 quarters, or "periodes" as we call them in Dutch:
>Quarter 1: 10 matches
>Quarter 2: 9 matches
>Quarter 3: 10 matches
>Quarter 4: 9 matches
All matches total are 38 matches - a full season.

The best performing team during each quarter becomes the "periodekampioen" or "quarter champion" in English. Not only do the quarter champions get a trophy and a monetary reward of 75k €, but will automatically qualify for the promotion play-offs, regardless of league position.

If a prior quarter champion once again wins a quarter, the second-best performing team during the quarter will receive the play-off ticket. If the second-best team already won a quarter themselves, then the play-off ticket will be decided by position at the end of the league. If the top 2 of the league have won quarters, then the play-off ticket(s) they won will go into the league as well.

Let's use this season as an example:
ADO won the first quarter, thus qualifying for the play-offs.
ADO also won the second quarter, so the play-off ticket went to 2nd best of the quarter Cambuur.
Cambuur won the third quarter, but because they already got the ticket from the second quarter, Willem II would receive it as the 2nd best of the quarter.
Now, that ADO and Cambuur promoted, the play-off tickets both teams won will be sent into the league and given to the two highest placed teams .

Add the youth teams into the mix (Jong PSV is in the Top 8 of the league) who can't join the play-offs, and you got a cooky little promotion system.

Now, if only they also allowed promotion/relegation between the 2nd and 3rd tier, and we'd have a healthy football pyramid for the first time in centuries.
>>
>>154351699
This seems crazy to me. 9 games is not enough to determine who the good teams are.
>>
>>154353894
Depends on the number of teams to be honest, but I tend to agree that playing only once against an opponent in a league system is retarded. If it were a knockout format then it would make more sense
