The types of people to worry about brain damage and the future are not the type to play football. Certain types of low impact positions like kickers and QBs still have some people that worry about brain damage and the future.

because it's fun, you meet people who can become your best friends, if you're good you get women and money, and most importantly, what are you going to do with your brain anyway? slave away in a call center or office the rest of your life? may as well do something you enjoy

Plenty of time to rest and heal with 17 games a year and a 4 months season.
Not to mention a game only has 20 minutes of action, and if you're a non-starter you only play maybe a handful of snaps (10% of snaps at beast so 2 minutes of playing).
The danger of handegg stems from reckless tackling due to players being so eager for actions (due to their low number of minutes) and the chaotic ruck where people pile onto each other randomly.
That and the fact that the current handegg meta is speed so a lot of underweight players get injured because they can't handle the impact.
I actually think you can survive pretty well in the sport if take care of yourself and have the build for it.
