Fans won't support something with no history or established credibility, when they're already spoiled for choice. I've seen this firsthand. I had a lead role in a major AAA game release within the past year. Our boomer ceo asked for a paint-by-numbers copy of every other game in the genre to play it safe, with a couple of small innovations. Literally the same gameplan as the UFL.

Commercial failure of the highest order. Entire audience went "why would I buy this when I'm already playing X and perfectly happy with it?"

They are doing the same thing as the UFL right now where they clean house and change leadership for optics the way the UFL is parading Mike Repole around, but from a structural standpoint they can't do anything meaningful (one game update was literally a new menu, like how the league renamed itself and went with a new logo or ambiguously moves teams around).

There's no scenario in which the UFL would have ever been popular. It only makes sense as a tax write-off or to farm tv ad revenue.
