Time will tell. By at least keeping it in Illinois. You'll have some good will left and people will watch out of Illinois pride. By completely moving to another state, it will shift the fan base and those on the fence will stop watching and those who rep the Chicago part of the burrs will stop watching. Ironically enough Sundays will become more productive in the phone region with less call offs in the workforce

>Isn't the stadium a net drain on the economy?
Large cities usually finance them through hotel taxes, so they'll pay for the stadium up front and make it back over time, and supposedly having a pro team will increase the city's visibility/standing and attract people and businesses to it. That's the belief, anyway. No idea how Hammond will pay for it. No one's moving to northwest Indiana, it's a well-known shithole.

This is going to be a good test of economy. Either Hammonds economy will grow enough to recover or Chicagos economy will grow after the team leave leaving less leverage for future teams when they decide to pull the old threat of moving. You can only move so many times until you beat the horse to death.

>unironically what are the positives of such a move?
In this case it’s because Soldier Field is old and tiny. Smallest in the NFL. And they don’t want to lease/buyout the stadium from the city when it’s up for renewal in like 7 years.
But there not really another good place in Chicago to put a stadium, and they also want to have their own Wrigleyville with other entertainment, bars, etc. The field right now just sits on the lake next to a museum and harbor. Not much room to build anything else. And even if they could the city and other groups make it damn near impossible.
They already purchased land outside the city but still in Illinois, but Indiana is offering a way better tax cut

because historically the American League and National League were entirely separate rival organisations. they didn't formally merge into one company until 2000.
the NFL and AFL were too, but the AFL was created specifically to serve markets the NFL had ignored so there were almost no market overlaps. only NYC had a team in each league, and otherwise just the DC-Baltimore metro area also had both leagues.

My understanding is that the Bears are moving because the city of Chicago is greedy and retarded and demanded bazillions of dollars in property taxes for Solider Field and offered a shit deal on a new stadium in Chicago.
People are still going to root for the Bears, still watch them on tv and go to the games at the new stadium.
