Long time MtG player (17 years?) and with what's happening to the game rn, i don't really have much interest in any of the new sets.
Sorcery looks like it could maybe scratch that itch. The art is fantastic and reminds me of legacy MtG art. Anybody here play?
I watched a few overview vids, but I'm curious how the actual gameplay goes.
For someone who plays mostly EDH, are there any similarities?
Is it usually a 2 player match?
How long are the matches usually?
Is it as much of a money pit as MtG?
Convinced a few of my MtG friends to give it a shot based off of the art alone. Just need an idea of what I'm up against in terms of learning curve.

It's fun, the art is generally great. Matches seem to go like 20+ minutes depending on what you're doing. There's some pretty expensive cards, but with the rarity card limits for deckbuilding a lot of the time you only need one or two copies of a card.

wow 20 minutes is nothing.
I'm so used to battlecruiser magic where the norm is like a grindy two-hour game.
how big is a standard deck?
I was thinking about just finding like some bulk on fb marketplace (surprisingly, it's out there) and cobbling something together. Unless they make precons, haven't looked into it really.

There are precons for Gothic and Beta, get the Gothic ones. Necromancer is a top tier Avatar. Decks are 60 spells, 30 lands and 10 collection(sideboard). The Ian Miller cards are by far my favorite art.

I hope it does well, doubt it will even deny MtG though because plenty of better games have come after MtG but they died because of a pretty limited player base. Brand recognition is one helluva thing to beat.

A friend mentioned it to me a few weeks ago and I've had a waning interest in MTG for a long while now so I'm going to get into it even if it turns out to be a dead game. I bought the Gothic precons and I bought some playsets of the ordinaries (commons) of each set off of Ebay which should be showing up in about a week, probably in the next week or two I'm going to buy a booster box to crack.
I've probably played around 10 games with the precons with my friend and the game seems fun even if we are still misplaying and don't have a good head for strategy yet, not to mention it feels like the precons are kinda lopsided in powerlevel.
I don't know if I like the fact the deckbuilding meta has a lot of universal autoincludes (toolbox no matter what for sidedeck casting wincons, cores/mixes/other powerful artifacts if you can afford them) and the entire meta seemed completely dominated by Druid decks before he got nerfed via errata.
The fact that a lot of cards I've seen have misinterpretable wording that can lead to confusion about how stuff is executed also isn't great, but Curiosa.com is a solid resource that clears most things up pretty quickly even if it is irritating that I have to interrupt games several times in order to figure stuff out.
Even with those reservations the game is doing too much cool stuff for me to ignore it. Between the art and the really interesting design space they use with some cards like pic related I can see myself spending a lot of time and money on this, even though the only people I'm probably going to be playing with are 2-3 friends since the closest sanctioned event is over an hour away from where I live.

The water decks are pretty dominant right now, but there's still a lot of competitive builds, also people are still trying to figure out what works in general. Cards like Atlantean Fate can be pretty brutal.

MTG player of 22 years that only plays premodern now here. Played in an 8 man Sorcery draft the other day and it's hands down the most fun I've had with a card game in years. Can't recommend it enough, man. If you have an LGS nearby with anyone that plays, join a draft and give it a shot. The grid adds a lot of depth in strategy.

Yea he painted a lot of cards in this recent set. the playmat for The Void is great, it's huge. Miller has been one of my favorite fantasy artists since Mirage came out, I really want to get an original piece from him before he's gone.

Atleast in our city sorcery has been steadily gaining new players, with most being ex-mtg players or completely new to tcg hobby. It's either been the art or gameplay drawing people in. Ppl seem to enjoy the boardgame feel of the game with site placement and cards really affecting the realm unlike in some other games. Someone in the latest sealed event pulled this badboy and gotta say that flavour texts are so damn good in this game,

The only thing you can validly do here is dislike the art style. The technical quality is objectively high, and if you can't see that, you're just not competent to judge the quality of anything.

I have played magic for like 20+ years and I just got the pre-cons and played with a friend today. It was super fun. I have a question for people more informed. I looked at the recent big tournament decks and only water decks are playing this games version of a mox, why is that? I would have thought every deck would just run them. I don't see them on their ban list.

I think there's a few reasons. They aren't a free spell, with a mox you can cut lands out of the deck while getting free ramp. The cores are powerful but you are cutting a spell to put them in the deck and they are only a good top deck in the early game since land drops are less random in Sorcery. There are some cards that are basically an auto include like Ring of Morrigan and the Omphalos from Gothic are very strong and seeing a lot of play. Key to the City got a good errata recently and will probably see a lot more play as well.

Is there any advice on how to expand the precon decks?

Just watched a vid about it and now I want it but there's 0 retailers in my shithole and international shipping is going to bankrupt me. Spatial mechanic reminds me a little bit of an old slav game called Berserk my college buddy showed me once (it also had a playmat and played sorta like HoMM video game battles), but it was in slav runes so I don't remember much.

>what if we make looking like 90s generic fantasy art our selling point
>>
>you play as a faceless avatar (well okay, some of them drawn with faces but the point stands), some type of being with godlike power you can self-insert as, and you don't have to deal with some marvel-tier writer's cringy self-insert and their family or love drama metaplots
>your planeswalker dude actually walks the planes and makes/shapes/destroys them as the game unfolds
>cool stories like that time when Yog-Sothoth was defeated by a frog unfold in the process of the game instead of card descriptions
>releases that give cards time to breathe instead of "let's make some money fast and invest in the AI bubble before this pile of shit sinks, here we come with 30 new sets!"
It's just what OG Magic wanted to be and is 100% worth a try. I wouldn't play it competitively but it's really fun with friends. Shame it's still a fucking TCG gacha filth. I'd rather buy all the cards of a set Dominions-style.

Wait hold on, Magic the Gathering made a whole fucking blog about how these cards were UNACCEPTABLE because of their names and had to ban them. This game had to know about that when they printed these.

You just spent 3 mana and a minion to make an opponent sacrifice 1 mana token. Although hang on, that dude's deck has a Deathspeaker instead of a Necromancer. Still a very situational spell (but can potentially win you a game).

Burn, essentially.
Desecrate + top end minion = 11-13 damage in a single turn.
All the Common burn spells + Major Explosion.
Summoning Sphere dropping an Infernal Legion up the opponent's ass.
Wizard spam for card draw + Summoning Sphere + Djinn up their Avatar's ass to mag dump your hand for 3 damage per card in a single turn.

MtG already exists to filter the retards out, Anon. Until that game crashes and burns, you don't have a lot to worry about other than gay eceleb Marxists content farming the game for ad revenue (which they do for everything by default anyways).
>>
>>97897496
Hopefully not. I like the 1 set per year model, it's slow and comfy. Especially comparing it to modern Magic (did they release 20 or 30 sets last year or something? I lost count at some point after Marvelslop release #342).
>>97897501
Unfortunately gay marxists have a lot of subscribers who will parrot their retarded views thus applying pressure to the publishers. It is known.
>>
>>97897506
The game literally not only has Crusade and Jihad cards but printed them *after* MTG already banned them for being muh offensive, gay marxists won't touch it other than to call it chudpilled and fascist.
