Vampires almost never try, it just happens as part of what they are. There are exceptions though.

I ran a game with a Lich that used slimes and then hard clay to make a sort of soft terracotta over his rotting bits. He was obsessed with his body and became a sort of Master Roshi type, always walking around looking for people to admire him. He was still a conventional lich, with aspirations of dark ascension and deals with dark gods (specifically Baphomet), but he wanted to live so he could LIVE, not just rot in a crypt. He became a massive hedonist, but in order to facilitate his desires he had to become palpable to the masses. So this involved perfume, fine clothes, maids for his tower, keeping up his terracotta flesh. Finally, he could use these principles in reverse, knowing what disarms a person aesthetically, he'd "re-arm" himself with fear and costumes to intimidate opponents.
