you are also underestimating how big the gap is between someone learning x27 times faster to someone learning x81 times faster, which gets even bigger when you have an unlimited lifespan. Seriously, in just 1 year a high magic race gets the equivalent of 81 years of training while the others only get 27 years worth of training.

The magic restriction is a small drawback imo, with enough mastery and creativity you could replicate the effects of the other magics, sure a demon will never be as good at healing as an angel but there is nothing stopping you from draining someone's health to heal yourself and so on.

but after 1k years you only get 8k years worth of learning, meanwhile non-hedge wizards get 27k years worth of learning, and high magic races end up with a whole 81k years worth of learning. You are 3 times stronger and faster at the cost of only having access to 1/3 of all the magic options. In a world with infinite growth that is a bad deal in my opinion. Versatility is king.

Being a monster at nature magic and enchantment is not going to help a fey stuck on a mechanical world where there is no nature to source the magic from, being a master of destruction and corruption is not always going to help a demon out and an angel can't always heal or bless their way out of a situation. But an immortal human archmage will always have a magical solution to whatever he is facing.

They give an example of earning immortality through a quest.

But to your point. I mean again, a fay will likely always be better at growing fruits than the human wizard (I am not contesting you on that) but he can teleport around the world and blow up castles.

At the top it also says that there are "many schools and types of magic oout there and that the high races are limited to certain ones." It does not define "many" but it sounds like it could be more than what the high races get combined.

It depends on your setting. It says under Magic Affinity that an ordinary person will need 10 years before they can do anything useful. In your case as a hedge wizard you will need 135 days of constant practice to reach that point (3650/27). If you start next to some small town a month away from the nearest city that can even teach magic then you need to be able to make yourself useful to the locals and I doubt they would care much for you talking their ears off with cityfolk knowledge. If your setting has good conditions for homeless bums then it might not matter.

Not what I was thinking at all, skill in a craft is nice but you need the tools and materials to actually do something and peoples that want to use your services instead of going to the person they go to usually. That's what the knowledge is for, knowing what can be sell and to what kind of peoples without breaking the local social contract and become a pariah.

Also an ordinary person need decades not just 10 years, but I'm assuming that Magic Affinity 3 with the 5 years of training from Hedge mage make you at least able of doing some cantrip level magic from the start.
To go back to the point that Sustenance2 still need a place to sleep, taking a companion and money with the free points human get from the miscellaneous bonuses is most likely the way to go for that.

That's by design, it's true that wheel of time served as inspiration but honestly one of my gripes with it was that saidin and saidar were too similar.
If I'm going for a chaos/order analogy then they would naturally work very differently.
Believe me that I put a lot of effort into making sure the magical systems make sense both at face value and once you know the deep lore.

MOST of the "combos" in my CYOA are largely extra fluff, like companions reacting if you pick certain choices. I do have a few minor actual combos (pick the magical map choice + the treasure sense choice, and treasure will show on you magicr map) but I'm not sure how far I want to go with those. I feel like emphasizing hidden combos too much runs the risk of spoiling some of the fun theorycrafting/experimentation of making a build. Feels potentially hazardous if not handled with extreme care.

You could run away, and only take the fight in a more favorable setting. Fighting the 5 zombies one-by-one, in a doorway, is feasible and comes without the risk of infection.

One guy assumed that fantasy zombies had higher stats than peasants, while another may imagine basic slow zombies, but without the infection. I think the latter makes more sense, otherwise there would be no need to frame the question in terms of 1 infectious zombie versus 5 non-infectious zombies.

I made it. I wanted to present a CYOA where you had to work in the negative space of the options. There are implications and assumptions built into the options presented, and the player has to transgress the boundaries to achieve any real power. To me magic exists in the transgression of boundaries, demands it even.

I added the devil's voice to cast the general shape of that negative space, as I was afraid that the implication would be missed if not at least pointed to. I feel that may have been a mistake, but I can't unplay that trick if I were to remake it.

It was my second CYOA so far, and I'm still learning Gimp. I'm trying things out and seeing what's sticking. Remember that these kinds of wishes are limited omnipotence where the first participant, the grantee, gives the granter a window to do anything as long as the outcome fulfills their given terms. Jolka wished to meet a man who can honorably defeat her. This wish will be fulfilled by turning her into the dragon described by this Dragonfall build, and myself into a dragonhunter with the physique, skill, and items needed to subdue her in the following fight. Trade offer accepted: your affection for power and humanity. Myself refuses to let any outside force remodel my ghost, she wouldn’t care about the same thing if she was wishing upon a dragonfall in exchange for an utterly unknown and likely horrific price. This is a fair trade. You see, I was also playing Dragonfall with the intent to build a furry wife, specifically because the author tried to block Us from doing that in the most obvious and lazy way. I wanted at first to do that in an equally obvious and lazy way, until I thought, “wouldn’t it be funnier to break the spirit of the rules in accordance with its letter?” I decided that the wish will be fulfilled by an otherwise impossible event, with both parties of the fight changed to fulfill it, while otherwise matching the spirit and word of the event.

Eww. I have to answer this one no matter my intentions. Granted, she has been retroactively promoted from slave to Jolka’s third retainer, without any of the mental or physical effects of her capvitity, remembering nothing of it except that that she wished to never have any experience with a certain person whose name has been stricken from her memory. This is literal, she only remembers a few seconds of herself saying her wish with _____’s name blotted by static. Static is not a concept known to her, she has no idea what that horrible noise in her memories is.
