Magic the Gathering: No UB
Read A Book Edition
This is a general for a version of Magic the Gathering that excludes 3rd party IPs, these cards are known as "Universes Beyond". This thread is not a duplicate of any other general, it is not a fork of any specific general. There is growing support for versions of Magic formats that exclude UB, for example Planar Standard. This general is the place for those discussions
This general is as legitimate as D&D Old School Renaissance threads and it exists for similar reasons.
Discussion of Magic the Gathering where no set or release that required 3rd party IP licensing can be mentioned. That includes Universes Beyond and Secret Lair.
WARNING: There is a massive sperg from /edhg/ seething over the existence of threads he didn't personally make and it is highly likely that he is going to try to shit up these threads for a while.
Ignore him and one day he will kill himself.
The ONLY Magic sets this year:
>Lorwyn Eclipsed, January 23 2026
>Secrets of Strixhaven, April 24 2026
>Reality Fracture, October 2 2026
Thread Question:
More than 40 cards got errata'd to include the "book" type. What do you think the reasoning for this is? How will books feature in future sets? Given they have no mechanics in common what was the purpose of this? When will any of the errata'd cards actually get updated reprints?

Yeah it can be bounced too, but in most situations people don't have exile or bounce for a land, so they'd have to get in while it's still a creature. If they don't, you will feel like a god

>watch the Strixhaven Command Zone game
>the 2 players with green are casting like 15+ mana per turn by turn 4
>the boros player gets to do literally nothing all game
>it's over on turn 6 or 7
God I hate the direction Commander is going in

Said it 100 times but tying basic game mechanics to colors was a fucking mistake.
The fact that basically only green can ramp and only blue can draw at a good rate completely fucking skews the game. It would be like if only red was competent in combat and every other color was crippled by comparison. Like just give all red creatures first strike or double strike, and that would be the sort of disparity in basic mechanics we see with green and blue
>>
>>
>>97932652
>wouldn't every color then just be identical?
Keeping access to keywords strictly color specific would be a good start
>where is the line drawn at basic mechanics?
I think it's pretty obvious.
>drawing cards
>playing lands
>making mana
>playing each type of card
Anything that you would look at and just think "yeah that's a fundamental game action"
You can stiff have colors that work better with particular types of card. Green can still be the landfall color, but enough of this shit where green decks can have twice as many lands on board as any other color. Either they don't get all the extra lands they get, or everyone has reasonably costed ways to play more lands.
It wasn't necessarily so bad a long time ago when lands were just the only thing green had, but nowadays they also draw whenever they cast creatures, whenever they cast enchantments, or draw equal to their power on board etc etc etc
The two most fundamental aspects of this game are making mana and drawing cards, and I will never fucking understand why designers at WotC were like "yeah green should just be really good at both of those"

Wait, I thought Rowling was "transphobic"? Since when is she homophobic as well? I have a hard time believing she would be against homosexual people, she's always come across as pretty fucking liberal to me.

Once the left decide someone to be persona non grata, all labels can be applied to them. You will see troons call her a literal Nazi all the time too.
Reminder this whole troon debacle started because she said, and I'm paraphrasing here but it's almost a one to one quote, "I know trans people in my life and I love them, but they are not biologically women"
Literally it. Said a male who identifies as female is valid but they're not biologically identical to a female.
>she's always come across as pretty fucking liberal to me.
She's a bit of a Blairite neo-liberal type, but 15 years ago her views were considered very progressive, yeah.
Anyways, what school am I playing in Strixhaven tomorrow? My heart says silverquill, but I've heard simic bullshit is strong in this limited environment

White can't have shit. The fact it's only tied to attacking is a stealth way you make it pretty much a hard once per turn too. The rezzed permanent doesn't even come in attacking, you're basically bringing it back for an ETB or static effect
>>
>>97932826
aight. let's assume this happens. now the next anon comes along and sees deeper mechanis as fundamental. like, why shouldn't every color be able to landfall, it can already ramp lands like everyone else. we have already seen this in certain colorpie shifts that were bends originally so it's not even a slippery slope fallacy anymore
I get your angle but people would always want more once the first push is standard enough
I would way rather have every color approach these problems in their own way like we currently have. red makes more treasures to ramp, and exiles the top card to "draw"
but yeah green get way too much shit comparatively

>God I hate the direction Commander is going in
It's a real shame what happened to the format. What's worse is that people will celebrate games being over so quickly because "it means we get to play more games," even though the lethargic nature of EDH was one of the few things that made it worth playing over 60-card. Now you have people begging WotC to let you play hybrid spells outside color identity because "that's how it's played in every other format," making it sound like they just wish all the other formats died off and the 100-card singleton format with a legendary creature leading your deck was the only way Magic was played.

>let's assume this happens. now the next anon comes along and sees deeper mechanis as fundamental.
Completely unjustifiable.
>why shouldn't every color be able to landfall
You simply would not print landfall in all colors.

>people will celebrate games being over so quickly because "it means we get to play more games,"
This is 100% an influencer mentality. They do this shit for a living, so they don't have to care about the quality of their games. People who only play 1 night a week and get in 2-3 games in that night care way more about if any of their games were actually good.
I recently saw one of those fat balding baseball cap MtG influencers give a "hot take" that Commander should have no ban list because "it's a casual format". The ban list is what keeps it fucking casual. This game is way too easy to break and the default rules capping power levels benefits the majority of people who are showing up at their LGS and just need a baseline understanding with whoever is there of how the game is played. This "no ban list" shit is something you can ONLY have in situations where you know the people you will be playing with and all share similar opinions on how the game should be played.
Fuck, I hate influencers so fucking much.

Because she once said (with groveling apologism) that men should not enter women's rape shelters even if they identify as women, she is regularly accused of:
- Racism
- Sexism
- Homophobia
- Antisemitism
- Islamophobia
- Ableism
- Actual card-carrying National Socialism
- Being MAGA, somehow
- possession by an eldritch mold demon living in her walls
- Transphobia (obvious)
This is simply how the progressive stack works. If you fail one purity test you auto-fail the rest of them unless The Party™ deems you useful in some way. It seems The Party™ decided JKR would be more useful as an example, though they may have bet on the wrong horse there considering Potter shit still sells gangbusters despite not having good media for a decade.

TG is slow and some people keep bumping dead threads before it reach page 9. (TG is slow because shitposts are done in generals instead of brand new threads)(and there are less people in the board, but there are lots of 1 day threads in here)

It was easy to find the bulk-tier rares at least even right after prerelease. From what I can see, wizards is still making certain garbage rares appear more often than others.
It's mainly the dragons and some of the other mythics I see people especially gravitate to, but availability may heavily increase in the next few weeks.
It's probably best to start chasing collector booster exclusives and mystical archive hits now. The supply of collector stuff is probably near its peak now that TCGPlayer has opened up SOS listings to all sellers now. From what I see, the odds of hitting a good rare/mythic mystical archive card from a play booster is so low that I would start looking now in your shoes.

I double-checked to make sure I was not just making shit up.
Picrel is an exerpt of last year's November BnR announcement article:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/banned-and-restricted- november-10-2025
From the product I have seen opened, I noticed a lot of copies of Moment of Reckoning (admittedly decent in EDH) and the two-brid Archaics compared to other cards. Always buy singles over sealed.

why are people not talking more about this? not that I buy cards anymore anyway, just trading.
but if they advertise cards with certain rarities being equal between each other (percentages on the back of packs) then this isn't something they should just blurt out, right?
>>
>>97939148
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. This sounds like some kind of conspiracy theory among players but they're just saying it out loud. Has this always been a thing and I just missed it all along or are they dropping the pretenses?

Stock Up was a U1 so it was shortprinted. It's a habit wotc has had since Arabian Nights. They do this so they can use the same sheet size for the printer (11x11 cards?) even though the sets aren't always in the same size (180 cards vs 240 cards) and so on. It's understandable but the excuse is a bit dishonest though.
