That design actually seems VERY bad...
First of all, the visor lift wouldn't clear the protrusion, and secondly, I'm pretty sure that won't protect from anything besides maybe some scraping.
What's funny is that I think that the original partial helmet in question might actually work as a helmet ... Sort of, because the function of a helmet is to absorb all of the kinetic impact in place of your skull, so a hit to that helmet at the right vector seems like it would allow the helmet to do its job.
See, the key factor though, is THE RIGHT VECTOR. Our helmets and their spherical shape allows them to absorb shock at a large range of vectors.
So I imagine that a large, egg shaped helmet would work for an anthro.
