Quality judgements for CYOA length should be based off how long it takes to get through one, not page count.
Page and font size are arbitrary so that isn't a meaningful distinction.
Personally I think CYOAs that take longer than 20 minutes to read and build for are getting to be too big.

for me the limit for reading through and starting to scetch out a build is 20-30 minutes, perhaps a bit longer if I'm expecting it; but with a very casual reading speed of over 1000 words per minute that means that said CYOA could be over 50 pages long and still would be read through in that period.

writing out the build in full? that could take anywhere from less than five minutes to several hours of writing.(if it takes me more then 20-30 minutes to scetch out the basics in my mind then it's not worth it to me- so that's my general limit for interactive CYOA's, as they note down your choices for you.)

for instance, it's good that Tentalce Realm is split into multiple parts, because part one is pressing up against my limit; meanwhile Fixing God's fuckups is long enough that I've never done more than a basic mental sketch for it.

Trying to make a build for this but having some trouble wrapping my head around how the cost system works. Feels like you start with 30 points but your Witch is expected to eventually reach 100 over time and training? Though it sounds like Power gains are very slow. Short CYOAs typically get far more engagement, and are thus perfect for bumping. If you need it to be longer, just throw a short meta CYOA onto it or combine it with another.

The best part about long CYOAs is using them to filter out people with shit opinions. If anyone comes in with "I'm looking for a CYOA that's like Divine Trials, Harahel or Fixing God's Fuckups" in that order, you know you are dealing with a special kind of kusual. You know, the kind who say they are into Anime because they've seen One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia. Otherwise, it'll be rare that they get much out of me.

By the way, I may as well put this here since may here are unlikely to visit reddit and it's good information to have. The power cap increases are in fact cumulative, they are not fixed. Story mode does not set your power to 10 at the start and 150 cap, it's a -20 starting points and +50 cap. Wizard and Slayer would start with 0 points but also have 160 cap.
Which means, you can have a total of 270 power cap by going Wizard/Slayer, Story Arc mode, and getting a Prestige Class, because that's +50 from story mode, +50 from prestige and +60 from complications, with the 110 those classes have already. You also have the Consortation/Ministration/Wishcasting power cap increases. Also one of the meta perks, Keeper of Magic, was shadow nerfed into the ground in this update. You used to be able to chhose a rank 8 wish from it, which would give a whopping +80/90 power cap if used on that, not it specifically says you can't use it to get more power.

The flexibility is part of the point, along with the differing game modes (in challenges). It’s a fantasy/writing prompt/etc. for you to play with, rather than a more prescriptive experience. So even in the base version you can either make your witch’s “starting build” and then go from there, or figure out where your witch will be at the endpoint of their ‘natural’ growth (with the growth rate giving you something to work with when ballparking how long that might take).

Depends on your class. Magicians are the slowest, followed by Sorceresses, but Warlock/Wizard/Slayer can be really fast. Warlock and Wizard have access to Favour, which means Quests are progression, and quests in general are a lot faster than the equivalent amount of Might/Focus. Slayers are left up in the air, which means they can technically grow even faster if your life is particularly eventful, and because of the fact Slayers have both Plot Armor and general Plot attraction that is likely to be the case.

I forgot to say. Favor is on top of the normal reward and goes directly into Power, but the reward itself can also become power, so you get double progression if you decide to focus on that.

It's different. Just like Magician can get 2 magics for free by studying Sorceress can get any elementalism school they have affinity for for free. That means the whole school, up to rank 5. Also normally you can only have 1 elemental school you don't have affinity for, sorceress does not have to worry about that and just buy as many as you want regardless of affinity.

You get 2 whole magic schools up to rank 5 for free just by studying. That's a whole 30 points worth of power beyond your cap. The only caveat is that you are really slow. It's the more classic witch option, the slow and steady approach instead of the flashy hero that levels mountains. It also gives discounts to some of the best options in the cyoa. But with the addition of Wizard it is a lot worse than it used to be.

I think I'm getting it. And maybe with all the discounts the limited points aren't quite as restrictive as I thought. It also seems like there may be a few ways to get around the slow gains. Even a low powered Genie could turbo charge your growth. Even so, you probably want to play with the same ruleset as anyone else you're building with. Otherwise Story Arc would be the optimal choice. It might take you a century as a Magician or Sorceress but immortality is pretty available.

Just to make sure I have the order of operations right its:
Base points, divide by 2 if you have the affinity, Round up, -2 cost if class matches.
This can make some things free or even negative cost. Like Witch Flame on a fire affinity sorcerer would give 1 point instead of costing two points.

Elementalism mentions that you can get a discount for the element if you have both complementing types instead of the element directly but I didn't catch any way to pick up a second elemental affinity. Am I missing something?

Complementing types are the OR one in the elementalism section.
So Firecalling gets the discount if you have it OR Metal and Wind

Given that a majority of all CYOA's are short enough to be done in under 20 and even 10min, then yes, having a minority being longer, and you complaining about that small portion, does in fact make this a YOU problem.
You cant expect that every single one of the CYOA's created have to cater specifically to your need and desires.
