i've met many people that does no research until they've actually landed in the place
used to be in a solo traveler group in thailand and daily there were "just landed in bangkok, where is the best place to stay and what is there to do"

The old port. There is a hill on the English promenade, you can get on top.
You should walk the whole English promenade once, as there are some mini markets, demonstrators, and fit girls running on it.
Old port and old city center are okay.
There are mountains on the hinterland, why nice village, maybe you can do that if you are motivated.
Some old churches also on the city center.

Don't miss the mix of golden larch trees and first snows in Mercantour. It usually happens in late October/early November and the colours are stunning, especially if you're lucky enough to have a bright blue sky.

Nice is pretty shit.
Along the train, there's some nice beaches, just jump on and go along the coast toward Italy and get off at a spot that looks alright.
Menton is bad for swimming but the town itself is really nice to just walk around in.
Ultimately it's pretty fuckin boring, the food isn't as good as Italy, it's not as relaxing as Greece, and it feels really empty even in the middle of summer.
