It's a one and done city unless you're into the bar culture and niche culture gatherings that happen, which is all behind some Korean version of $popular_app but korea-fyed.

Do all the tourist shit, and that's it, then go to bars and have girls want to practice english on you and maybe fuck em. Most want to leave.
>>

I’m going with my waifu so can’t even degen and pick up girls. I plan to just eat kbbq every day and go to cafes and read books in my hotel room. It’s amazing to me that I’ve been there 3 times before and literally nothing stands out as memorable to me. Except for the time my friend and I took acid and walked around for a few hours, but all the credit to the acid and none to the city.

I keep searching for things to do, and every single list of "things to do in seoul" is just
>go shopping for streetwear
>drink soju
>kpop stuff
It's wild to me how there can exist a city of 30 million people that has such a dearth of anything worthwhile. Also Korean beer is disgusting. Truly. a race of bugmen.
>>
>>2884477
Go to Hongdae, eat random street food, get hammered on cheap Soju and Terra at the bars, go to some Korean restaurants, go to random markets, go to Gyeongbokgung Palace, if you are really bored go up to Seoul tower. If you get a chance to see the DMZ for a day go do a tour for that. Idk, you can make it entertaining if you want to.

don't get me wrong, I'm all about drinking soju and eating kbbq. But shopping for streetwear and kpop stuff is just turbonormie faggotry. I live in Tokyo and never run out of interesting things to do, but seems like the only things to do in Korea are shop/eat/consume kpop/go to karaoke. yawn. I can do all that stuff at home and it'll be 10x better quality too.
>>2884653
Hongdae is a trashy stinky dump of a place. I do plan on doing a DMZ day trip though, looking forward to that.

there is plenty of hiking
lots of museums, many of them are free. the war museum and national museums are both great, free and worth checking out
several palaces you can check out, although if you go to them all they do get a bit same-y. there are some further out you can go to which are world heritage sites, suwon hwaseong and namhamsanseong
dongdaemun design plaza usually has some kind of art exhibitions on, sometimes they are free
everland is a decent theme park/ zoo
>>2884646
i think most of the lists you see more reflect the average kind of tourist going to korea which is into kpop and going there for cosmetics so the lists are a bit shit

I have great hiking in Japan and while I’m not opposed to the occasional museum visit, I’m never visiting a place primarily for its museums. All the josunoid answers to my question just come across as major cope.
I can’t get over how all Korean food is just variations of red sloppa either. Of all the developed countries, korea really has the least going for it

what do dofags even do? in tokyo
>>
>>2885032
go to bookstores, music kissa, jazz kissa, smoke indoors, become a regular at a hole-in-the-wall bar that the same guy has been running for 40 years, go to onsen, get massages, flirt with girls, hop off at a random train station and explore the area (each station/neighborhood in tokyo has a lot to do, unlike seoul where it's more of the same at every spot), go to izakayas, hire prozzies, go to an arcade and play tekken or crane games, cigar lounges, cocktail bars, go to libraries and read, explore the beautiful parks and gardens, eat food that isn't just red colored slop, ramen, yakitori, sushi, soba, take a train to the sea for the day, take a train to the mountains and go hiking, ride the train for an hour to end up in another province to grab lunch. I have never once felt bored in Japan.
>>
>>2885032
visit shrines, collect goshuin, collect eki stamps, watch sumo, eat chankonabe and watch sumo, drink beer, eat world cuisine (best italian and french food in the world are made in Japan, not italy and france), eat the best pizza in the world, rent a car for a day and drive to the mountains, go to live music venues, underground shows, punk rocker shows, metal shows, hope on a ferry and do a river cruise through the city, go fishing

the list goes on and on. I'm sorry koreafags but every other country in the world mogs you incredibly hard.

The ramen on menus at Korean restaurants is store-bought instant ramen. The key is how the restaurant adds its own unique toppings.
If you search "cooking Korean ramen" on YouTube, you'll find plenty of videos showing how to cook with instant ramen.

Seoul is the gateway city to South Korea, a country which can only be accessed by airplane. Who cares if it is just another hyper-urban dystopia? There's all kinds of mountains and intricate coastline to explore all across SK. Unfortunately, places of lodging seem to be extremely limited outside the big cities, and also quite expensive. Never a good sign, it means they don't want outsiders hanging around even if they do have lots of money to spend on a room.

Seoul is more a city for "living" rather than tourists visiting

I despise the shopping stuff and <some shitty shows "famous" set> as well
there's still a bunch of stuff to do if you're into history
>Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung etc. Palace
>Jugyesa, Bongeunsa etc. Temple
>City wall
>various Hanok villages
>various cool shrines

and a bunch of cool museums
>War memorial museum
>kimchikan museum
>National museum
>folklore museum
>museum of history

otherwise plenty parks around
or go hiking
a lot of good trails around Seoul, usually with some good viewpoints on the city as well
mostly you get to the trail heads by metro+bus within <1h, so not even far out
>>
>>2885424
is there another city in korea with more culture that is more interesting?
>>
>>2885424
>Seoul is more a city for "living" rather than tourists visiting
This is the crux of it really. Palaces are cool but I often feel like once you've seen one of them (in a given country) you've kind of seen them all. I like old walls and shrines, will check some of those out. Thanks anon.

Which of the museums do you think are the best? Folklore museum sounds kinda cool
>>
>>2885434
not really
you have a bunch of interesting places scattered all over which are worth visiting
like the tripitaka Koreana
but not really a single city

Seoul itself IS interesting and easily has enough to do for a week
just not as a "coherent" destination (if this makes sense)

>>2885438
>Palaces are cool but I often feel like once you've seen one of them (in a given country) you've kind of seen them all
kinda true
but since there are only 5 in Seoul, I still visited them all
the 2 smaller ones really only take 1-2h max

>I like old walls and shrines
then definitely do the (full) Seoul City Wall hike
it's really cool
there are 6 sections and you typically only see people doing the Namsan or Inwangsan trails, but the other are worthwhile as well imo

if you like shrines
visit some of the more rural temples
we got a rental car and drove to Busan with a few stops in between, mostly at historic sites

>Which of the museums do you think are the best?
kimchikan and war memorial!
kimchikan if you like /ck/, one of the best made museums i've ever visited, has some history, you can taste kimchi and on some days there are courses
the war memorial museum (the indoor part, the outdoor part is just old surplus like tanks, howitzers and planes you can look at) has like a full walk through through Korean history in terms of conflicts and wars
when you're even remotely interested in /k/ a must visit
visit early, because it makes all the other history stuff way more interesting as you can contextualize it with the right period
>>
>>2885434
>is there another city in korea with more culture that is more interesting?
Gyeongju
All the Koreans go on field trips there to see the cultural landmarks. It was the capital of Silla and didn't get fucked up by the Korean War

That's a unique personality.

You must be bored if you're a weeb.

Tokyo is no different from Seoul, unless you have a hobby related to Japan..

>>
>>2886041
>group oriented city
what does that even mean
>>
>>2885599
>tougher to do without renting a car
you need to be an adult to post here
and posters are majority US/EU based, where most people have a drivers license
renting a car is also pretty easy and affordable <50€/day (if you avoid high season)
so I don't see why that would a big restriction

also it's not even that bad
there are plenty buses which reach most major stuff
unless you have a very tight schedule or want to do something like the mount Hallasan hike (where there is no bus early enough), you don't need a car

>and knowing Korean
bullshit
it's literally the same as for the rest of Korea
most people speak some broken english
plus some basic korean phrases and you can get by just find

also it's super touristy everywhere
literally just ask the next young person to help translate for a minute if you really struggle

In Japan, it’s perfectly normal to go to a restaurant or an enertainment facility alone, and no one bats an eye.
But in South Korea, if you go alone, you might get looked down upon as someone who “has no friends” or is “lonely”.
However, things have changed quite a bit now, and more and more restaurants are offering seats for single diners.
>>
Can I go on a tour of those meme bakeries that get millions of views on youtube?
I would say the most interesting thing about Korea, to me, is the semi-westernization of the culture and the food. And they are less afraid to be weird than the Japanese (non sexually).
>>
>>2886060
schizophrenia
>>
>>2886060
I think about this sometimes. People who have to do everything in a squad of friends are, I think, fundamentally insecure people. Doing things solo is the epitome of based. Expanded to a societal scale, I think Koreans are insecure about the size of their penis (the smallest in the world, smaller than jeets even). It explains a lot about korea that they are an inherently insecure people.
>>
>>2886060
>But in South Korea, if you go alone, you might get looked down upon as someone who “has no friends” or is “lonely”.
really depends where you're going

and rejections for solo persons only happen during busy evenings
otherwise no one cares
higher end restaurants often have one "communal" table for all the people that come alone
which is genuinely pretty cool and something I haven't seen much outside of SK

>>
>>2886261
Even though Westerners claim to value individualism, they’re afraid of being seen by others as lonely people who act alone and have no friends.
>>
>>2886261

why though?

plenty higher-end restaurants just reject you if you try to reserve for just one person
the solo table solves this for everyone

It can be boring. Some ideas as someone who lived there for awhile

Go to gyeongbokgung palace and rent Korean clothing to walk around, it's free entry then

Eat as much local food as you can it's cheap and delicious, kimbap is a good snack and good for picnics, bibimbap is good, bbq ia good, all of their stews are good but watch for spicy if you don't eat spicy

Speaking of picnic go to the park by han river it's a popular place, you can also order food while you are there, and the best is yangnyeom chicken

There are karaoke rooms everywhere you can go and pay by time or by song and you have a private room, many songs to choose from

Also at han river are bike rentals, any wonderful bike paths

Metro shopping centers have a lot of cheap items if you want to buy something or look around

Lotte World is honestly really fun but always busy, there is also an ice rink there, and restaurants

Some theaters have reclining lounge seats, a nice way to see a movie

There's a park that shows traditional Korean life and it's alright

There's also a stream that is nice to walk along through the city and it does go nearby the palace but many places too

Many accessible mountains for hiking, really fun I recommend

It depends what you are interested in
>>
>>2886576
I lived there and was never bored. Dofags are mindbroken goycattle
>>
>>2886566
>woah, the heckin hustle and bustle of the BIG CITEE! so exCITING!
Unless you have wads of money to throw around, big cities are not exciting. Poorfags are treated as non-persons in big cities.
>>
Chyeongeecheon stream at night is pretty good for a stretch of the legs. It is a redeveloped stream area and sections are lined with coffee shops and eateries. It all lights up and shit. Loads of locals hang out there. Along that stretch you can also find a slab from the Berlin Wall that was erected there by a University. It was in a random spot.

The markets are also pretty fun. By Dongdaemun there is a hat market that is kind of weird. Dongdaemun is a neat section of the old city walls that has been preserved and lights up at night.

The nightlife is seriously good. If you want to be out all night until sunrise the next day on the sauce then Seoul is one of the best cities in the world for that.

Go to Jjimjjilbang sauna or a public bath place and chill the heck out. Similar to Japanese bathhouses but with large public sauna rooms and eateries attached. Some have gym areas for a bit of a workout.

Go to baseball. KBO is pretty good level wise, but the crowds are crazy. The singing and dancing is lead but has more of an unhinged chaotic fun vibe unlike the more ordered cheering in Japan. I used to buy myself a roasted chicken and a flat of beer and walk in and enjoy myself for nine innings of mayhem.

As with above it is never boring there. Personally Busan is better and has the coastal vibe. I know it is the cool thing to do here and shit all over Korea, but it is a fun country with a lot to do and some natural beauty especially in the country side and mountains.

It is more expensive then China or SEA, but less so than Japan. It is still somewhat reasonable compared to a lot of big city hustle and bustle and easy to get around.

Seoul doesn't have much in terms of touristy shit aside from Namsan mountain, museums, the central palace, Lotte World, Millenium Park, and a lot of hiking. You have to list what you enjoy doing to get recommendations.

Also I think you’re objectively wrong. I spend way less money on city travels than I do on countryside travels. Cafes are cheap, museums are cheap or free, parks are free. Most of my activities in cities involves just walking around looking at stuff, hanging out in parks and cafes, and eating like a local.

If you are into vinyl records and old shit, Hoehyeon underground Mall attached to the subway station of the same name is a gold mine. Loads of dusty old bins of vinyl to pick through and some random antiques. The underground malls in general can be interesting to explore. Some of them go on and on. In Busan underneath Jungang towards Nampo and then down to Jalgachi is a massive underground series of shops. Everything from old cameras to Lotte to clothes to antiques. A few sections will feel like you have stepped back in time.

I spent one month in Seoul being a lazy drunk, it was my first experience being in an Asian megacity and I really enjoyed it.

First of all, try all kind of weird food and alcohol. Makgeolli, haejangguk and any kind of soup that seems appetizing to you, sundae, I also remember a restaurant called Myeongdong Kyoja in Itaewon which is not fancy at all and only have 4 meals, but everything is good there.

Speaking of Itaewon, what I really liked about Seoul is how every district is different from each other. Itaewon is the foreigner district with clubs and restaurants from all over the world and there is also a couple of jazz clubs IIRC, Hongdae is also catering to foreigners but more rough around the edges, that's where all the good rock music shows are.
If you have a girlfriend, you can go to Seongsu, it's cozy and has a lot of cute cafés (don't go there if you are lonely tho, it almost turned me into an incel).

Then there is Dongmyo which is the flea market district basically, lots of cheap clothes and things of all sorts, I bought a rare Sony walkman there. There is also the Gwangjang market not too far away, with the weirdest Korean food imaginable, but what I liked there was a restaurant called Ho Seonsaeng Jeon, which serves all kind of makgeollis you can't find at 7-11.

Then, beside the usual tourist attractions, I don't know what to recommend desu. What I enjoyed the most was strolling around, talking with people in my hostel at night over a drink, getting recommandations from them and going there the next day. If you are the kind of traveler who plans everything in advance, Seoul is rather boring, but if you are like me and go "hmmm today, I feel like going to the Seoul Tower by foot and explore the park nearby" or "today I'm gonna go to the music mall get a pair of headphones", or idk, going to the haircut district on a whim, it's a cool city.

Oh and about the Korea vs. Japan comparisons... China mogs them both but you aren't ready for this conversation.
>>
>>2887105
china is better for dofags and has good logistics but the education of the locals presents some problems if you ever want to interact with it deeply

In my experience, both South Koreans and Chinese people are bad at English (which is normal, it's very different from their native tongue).

Korea has nice logistics too, travelling to Busan or Gyeongju was absolutely no fuss, just go on the official Korail website. I regret not visiting smaller cities and the countryside more after watching a TV documentary about Korean boomers, damn.

China is more exciting, has better historical monuments, and people are overall friendlier, no contest, it's a bit of a crazy adventure, but Koreans are alright and fine too, their alcohol is better and their nightlife in both Busan and Seoul is better, especially in Busan. And it feels unfair to compare a country the size of Europe to another country the size of Iceland anyway.
I've never been to Japan but they seem to be stuck-up bitches compared to Koreans and the Chinese, and that kinda motivated my choice to go to Seoul instead of Tokyo.
Oh and don't forget to read Korea Times, their reporting is quite good compared to usual Western slop.

Been having fun in Seoul for the last 36 hours, but the whole city really does have this kind of grimy patina to it. The streets and alleys are covered in cigarette butts and garbage. Window cleaning is apparently unheard of here, there’ll be some big glass edifice but all the glass is covered in dust and samgyeopsal grease. Building facades are made with cheap tiles that often fall off, revealing the plaster adhesive underneath. Signage on buildings is haphazard and letters are often askew or have fallen off completely. Everyone must be too busy playing LoL on their phones to notice or care about the general state of decay that exists here. (Pic unrelated; it’s the cleanest place I’ve seen)
