As a black briton who travelled to Russia I was accepted with open arms but my travel partner, a white briton, was attacked by skinheads for being a member of the collective west. I had to step in.
Being black in Russia isn't a hinderance, it's a superpower. I encourage you to watch this documentary on the Afro-Russian community and how their skin colour allows them to win.

Russians since the USSR days have always felt fondness for Africans. They would invite thousands of African youths to Russia to study and live for a few years, all expenses paid by the government.

Russia is a low-trust society from what I've gathered. Low social trust, low political trust, but maybe high transactional trust, IDK. Solo travelers who wander off the beaten path are going to be treated with deep suspicion everywhere they go. Much better to be an extremely visible outsider (like an African), sticking to popular tourist destinations and keeping your travel goals simple.
Past travelers have said that the outland parts of Russia have awful food and accomodations. The universal reaction is "why the hell are you even here?", not "welcome to our village, American".
Did you know in the 1990s there were direct flights from Seattle to Vladivostok? But then relations chilled, and the flights ended.
