>Amazon Studios has to be at least a little thankful that J.R.R. Tolkien is no longer around. First, the studio came under fire by best-selling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson for its Wheel of Time adaptation (“I had my problems with the show,” Sanderson said last year. “I won’t miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy … it had a fan base that deserved better”). Then last month, the creator of the God of War video game, David Jaffe, savaged a first-look photo (above) from Prime Video’s upcoming big-budget adaptation (“It is so bad in so many ways,” Jaffe said in a YouTube rant. “Neither of these characters look very interesting or appealing. If this was God of War: Dumb and Dumber edition, this is what you would expect”).

>Prime Video is not alone in having a fantasy creator target its adaptation. The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski has repeatedly thrown passive barbs at Netflix’s troubled series, saying things like the streamer “never listened to me” and “I cannot praise the show, it wouldn’t be decent” (The Witcher also famously lost its star Henry Cavill amid still-murky circumstances, with the actor having hinted that fidelity to the source material was a core issue for him).

I don't give a fuck when adaptations are not faithful. I give a fuck when they're not good.
If something is different from the source but good and well-made, no one minds.

The easiest way for an adaptation to be good is to be faithful to the source material, preserving what people liked about it in the first place
>>
>>219790646
It's funny because the only times I have seen changes having greatly improved the source material is when it's something written by Stephen King
>>
>>219790858
No, the easiest way is to have competent people making it with something to say.
There's a million Warhammer 40k novels, which are all faithful to the source, and every single one of them sucks major balls.

You don't get to cry about your work being bastardized if you sold the rights. This is doubly true if you sell the rights to a buyer who has a clear and consistent history of doing XYZ, like Netflix and Amazon do.

>Fantasy Authors Increasingly Call Out "Unfaithful" Adaptations

It's the authors own fault for grabbing the money the networks dropped in their lap and not signing a contract that gives them some level of control over the adaptions.

GRRM clearly didn't give a fuck and took the money and ran, letting HBO do whatever they wanted with his work despite him having worked in tv in the past and knowing how they operate.

Meanwhile, "Walking Dead' author Robert Kirkman signed a deal making him a full producer on the tv adaption of his comic, which for example gave him the power to force AMC to shitcan the original showrunner when he wanted to drastically change the story.

True, and the story is that he was forced into the deal by the rest of the Tolkien family, who only saw dollar signs (though IMO Jackson's flicks were pretty good).

The novel Jaws devotes more time to Brody's wife being a cheating whore than it does to the fucking shark eating people. The Godfather is a pretty lousy book too.
>>

>The Godfather is literally the same as the book.

Indeed, though Coppola did remove the parts about not-Frank Sinatra and not-Dean Martin as well as Sonny's mistress and her cavernous pussy, neither of which added anything to the story and were just padding (though interesting parts of the novel).

Correct. Starship Troopers is nothing like the book but it's amazing. To be fair, that's probably the only example anyone can think of, but still.

The problem with 40k is that it was never supposed to be more than a setting to set stories in that gave some context to the Tabletop game + accessories that was the main attraction and the thing the company was actually selling. Players were supposed to come up with their own scenarios and stories within that very broad setting of like 10k years and billions of worlds. But fans demanded LORE and PROGRESSION and to fulfill that demand GW hired a bunch of second rate pulp writers to write some background stories and now it's basically Star Wars with capeshit characters.

I'll add "Shogun" as another novel stupidly fucked up by the network, though in this case the author was dead and his daughter signed the deal. Supposedly there are plans to adopt Clavell's novel "Tai-Pan" and they'll no doubt fuck that up also.

Do you think studios easily hand out those kinds of contracts? In the end 99% of creators always cave in and enjoy the pay out and extra visibility to their creation. Probably the only one who has the kind of fuck you money to hold fast to creative control is JK Rowling.

It's pretty depressing how even Henry Cavill couldn't save The Witcher from this shit.
It apparently didn't matter that he was the main character, a huge star, and the main draw for their series.
They were content to dump him just so they could fuck with the story.

I think this is why they always hire people who haven't read the book.
So they won't try to stand up for the integrity of the source material when orders come down from on high.

>>

>I think this is why they always hire people who haven't read the book.
I doubt that's the issue, it's very hard to get an original script in modern hollywood. Movie and tv writers rely on established IPs usually books and twist the source to tell their own story because they don't have any outlet to tell their own original story. That's obviously slimmy and retarded but them not being familiar with the source material isn't the root of the problem.
>>
>>219790646
You can usually make a good movie based on a good book but not vice versa unless it's Starship troopers. Which is why faithful adaptations are usually good.
You can make an unfaithful adaptation but a great movie if you're Tarkovsky with Solaris and Stalker but modern Hollywood directors are not Tarkovskys. Stanislaw Lem hated Tarkovsky's adaptation his novel and had a shouting match with him.

I wish more writers were as principled as Stephenie Meyer when Hollywood adapts their books. Looking at you, GRRM and Sapkowski. Faithful adaptation under Meyer's control made Twilight the commercial juggernaut.
>One of the most problematic times Stephenie Meyer refused a change for the Twilight movies was by refusing to add non-white characters to the main cast. When the first Twilight adaptation was in production, the director, Catherine Hardwicke, wanted to diversify the Cullen family. Meyer did not agree with this change though, citing that in the books, the Cullens were described as having "pale, glistening skin." This conflict between Hardwicke and Meyer became one reason why Hardwicke did not return for New Moon or the following films, despite the first one's success.

Dunk is a low-stakes conventional good guy is heroic and epic and beats up the bad guys story. As long as it's made with passion and honesty, it's hard to fuck up.

House of the Dragon is a much more politically charged story, and it is written by hysterical liberal millennial women and their genX male enablers who saw Daenerys turning evil as like being forced to watch Hillary lose 2016 all over again. In their grief, they chose to write House of the Dragon as an apology fanfic, where all the women are virtuous, heroic mary sues and all the men are evil cowards who deserve to die, when the reason people liked game of thrones in the first place was the shades of gray and complex conflicts that had good and evil people on both sides. It comes across as preachy and juvenile

>Stanislaw Lem hated Tarkovsky's adaptation his novel and had a shouting match with him.
He's not wrong. None of the film adaptations hit on what makes the novel so chilling and resonant, namely the complete alienation of the individual and existential isolation.
But the book doesn't exactly lend itself to adaptation since a good quarter of the novel is the guy reading old exploration reports of solaris.

The problem is that I don't want to see a story made by some talentless DEI cunt who couldn't sell a project on their own merit, I want to see an adaptation of whatever it is being adapted.
The fuck is the point in buying the rights to adapt something and then completely change it to the point where it in no way resembles the story it's riding the coattails of?
The list of faithful adaptations is something you can barely count on one hand, and the times a director has improved on the original is even smaller.

Christopher Tolkien was also a hypocritical bitch who:
1. Removed the Dagor Dagorach from the Silmarillion, even though his own father put it there, and he did it because it cemented the fact that Arda is not Ancient Earth.

Not portrayed as an evil act, two episodes later Rhaenys is talking about how these evil men are bloodthirsty and start wars. In the words of Sara Hess "it's game of thrones, civillians don't count"

>alicentt misunderstands viserys and sets the dance off
A misunderstanding, because poor widdle women aren't responsible for their actions, and her entire arc in season 2 is learning that she was wrong and that the most heroic thing she can do to atone is to let Rhaenyra murder her children

I imagine it's because studios are too risk averse these days. That's why we only get sequel movies and endless reboots. All these writers who wanna do their own shows never get the opportunity to do so. So they simply take on work for anything they can get and then twist it into something they would rather do. Doesn't mean that I like it but it's the studios fault for only wanting to do safe shit.

A scanner darkly is damn near a page-for-page adaptation of the novel with only a few minor sections cut (like the dogshit on the engine).
The problem with adapting a novel is that you have to try and condense hundreds of pages of dense exposition, dialogue, and all the rest into a 90 page screenplay. You've just always got to be hacking apart and streamlining the story for practical purposes.
If you're adapting prose the best thing is either a short story, or novella. Assuming you give a shit about authenticity of the source material (you shouldn't, the source material is still there).

Not true at all. There’s countless cases where the movie makes changes for the better and if an adaptation is bad it’s not because they took liberties but because for whatever reason the movie doesn’t work.

>They license it for a reason, because it was GOO
They buy rights just to get a title they want to use or because something was a best seller or one specific producer or director liked something but then never could get it done so it ultimately gets passed from one person to the next until someone accidentally gets it made.

You fucks would hate Out of Sight and Jackie Brown if they came out today for stupid racist reasons despite them objectively being great movies

Witcher and Szapkowski was always a funny case, because Witcher was always turbo-woke and the entire TV production is completely unnecessary friendly fire. What people generally consider to be Witcher is the first book of short stories and Witcher 3 videogame. What you see in the show is mostly what later books are about - women rule the world, men are easily manipulated dimwits, warrior queens charge into battle, Ciri has her lesbian adventure, and Geralt is mostly missing from the story.
Only reason why there are no raceswaps is because Szapkowski didn't think of it himsrlf back in 90s, otherwise he would 100% do it. Instead we have muscular female garrison guards eating beans, farting, telling bad jokes and sexually harassing nervous Geralt in the last book.

I still can't believe how badly they messed up the Witcher. All they had to do was adapt the books faithfully. If there was any controversy, just point to the author. He started out with that idea, yes, but over time decided on it being an alternative Earth. The Dagor Dagorach is the final proof of that, since Morgoth's return and the final war includes Arda's complete destruction.

The books, and the games for that matter, where woke alright, but they were trying to make the woke palatable to white men. Like, women are your betters, but they're super hot and your self insert character gets to fuck them, that kind of thing. That's why it's still enjoyable to consume, even if a keener spirit sniffs out the propaganda. The show doesn't try to be attractive to white men at all, it's just in your face not for them.

I feel like its more like A Two Headed Cerberus. Gen X wants to write what they want to see and takes these adaptations and does whatever stupid bullshit they like and the DEI is Millennial. They are usually a writing team of one 55 year old and a bunch of 38 year olds. So while people call it Millennial Writing for a good reason a lot of Gen X ideas are in each of these shows too.

Millennial writing is just catchier than Gen X Writing though it just is sorry.

That's why I said it was completely unnecessary fail, if they just stuck with minor details. People would still bitch but they would be able to use cover of books for their work. S4 was shockingly accurate to books.
>>
How is this "increasing"? King bitched about Kubrick's Shining. Clive Barker got so buttmad at Hollywood's butchering of his early work he produced "Hellraiser" himself, even though he couldn't much afford it. The list could go on and on.

Triss and Shani are sweet in the books. Sapkowski is an old-school 90s liberal and his books are not woke.
Feminists hate Sapkowski's books.
>The thing is, though, that The Last Wish isn’t good. It has some enjoyable and interesting moments, but it drags impossibly in others. The book is also rampantly, painfully sexist—I went in expecting a fair amount and was still floored by it. Rape is so commonplace and treated so cavalierly it becomes the festive tapestry on The Last Wish’s dull, slightly moist castle wall, and if it weren’t for the occasional modern turn-of-phrase or curse word, I might have thought the books were written in the 1950s, when in fact The Last Wish was originally published in Poland in 1993.

It's pointless to say that Tolkien "decided" anything because the Silmarillion is unfinished and it's simply impossible to know what parts of it he would've kept around if he was ever going to publish it.

Dagor Dagorach being canon or not is completely irrelevant, just take it as it is, a thing that Tolkien at some point thought about.

Why would anybody watch an adaption? If I want to engage with The Witcher or God of War, I'll play the video games. If I want to experience LOTR, I'll read my books. We know the entertainment industry is incapable of producing quality adaptions due to activist writers and DEI. The fact people STILL get their hopes up expecting a quality adaption illustrates how stupid TV watchers are. Simply switch off your television sets and let the industry whither and die.
>>
Somehow Spielberg managed to make two movies that are better than the source material: Jaws and Jurassic Park.
>>
I completely understand that sometimes an adaptation needs to scale down on what's happening in the actual book because money isn't infinite and writing is cheaper than directing. But I also know that 99% of the time the problems with adaptations have absolutely nothing to do with decisions taken to stay on the budget and everything to do with streamlining and repackaging something for greater mass appeal

For example, I'm not a big fan of the Boys, but I still think the last arc of it is excellent and one of the best finale Ennis has written, not this horseshit they're cooking up.

Use logic, retard.

The reason something is even up for being adapted to TV or film in the first place is probably because it's PRETTY GOOD which means you should probably remain faithful to the good thing, instead of subverting the expectations of the fanbase which makes you have to paddle upstream. Your changes better be fucking brilliant or you'll get roasted alive for it.

It's retarded. Faithful adaptations are absolutely how it should be done.

>>
>>219795129
>What about the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Ages?
90% of everything said on that topic was in said interview.

As to the "Red Book", it's just in the 1st Edition's introduction that Tolkien states he got a copy in Westron that he himself translated into English.

Again, those were just floating ideas, while the Dagor Dagorach was something he worked on throughout the years.

I wonder if some of the opinions here on the Witcher books are due to a poor translation into English, after all they were quickly done to ride the hype train of the games, or anon just being stupid or perhaps not even reading the books, just scommed through plot on Wiki.

For me, being woke is about being didactic, which the books definitely aren't. Yes, it deals with issues like racism, but in a very cynical way. Remember, the villain is the diverse multicultural empire and it is the free kingdoms were pogroms and race riots happened

Forrest Gump book has a part where he, some woman and an ape go to space and crash on cannibal island, where cannibals force them to farm cotton and cannibal chief, who studied in England, likes chess, but Forrest always wins so he decides not to eat them until he wins. Then after harvest when Forrest and friends are about to sail away to sell cotton and never come back he gets distracted and loses and they get chased by all the cannibals who want to eat them now.

As long as they keep licensing out their IP to Amazon without any kind of creative control clause in the contract, they have only themselves to blame.
>but Amazon wouldn't agree to that kind of contract
Would they not, or is it just a case of creators being too afraid to ask? I'm sure some Amazon exec might notice the bad PR the adaptations keep getting and realizing putting some 40 year old ultra left cat lady in charge of the shows isn't yielding great results. I suspect it's more likely the cucked creators are afraid of openly admitting to themselves that the far leftist crap is ruining their material, probably because they themselves are moderately leftist and admitting that the more extreme version of themselves is toxic would be admitting that their whole ideology isn't great. So they hmm and haw and make vague noises about how the adaptation was poor but don't really look the problem square in the face.

And because they refuse to acknowledge the problem to themselves, they don't demand creative control in their contract, something that lets them override creative decisions from the studio and/or demand that any particular staff be replaced at their discretion (so that they can boot the 40 year old cat lady). Because if there's no problem with their show getting pozzed, why would they need some kind of clause like that?

This is correct.
For example, Kubrick's The Shining is the definitive version.

>>
>>219790726
>Blade Runner
>Jurassic Park
>The Shining
>Starship Troopers
Off the top of my head, these are all the examples of adaptations that made massive changes to the source material, but still turned out good. Good movies, but they're nothing compared to the ocean of terrible fucking adaptations.
The rule of thumb should be to try and please fans of the source material, since they're your built-in audience. Pissing them off means an uphill battle trying to find an audience. Look at Sonic, they're about to make the fourth movie in that franchise by just adding fanservice dweebs can fangasm over.
What I'm saying is if you tell fans to fuck off and change the source material to fit "muh vision", you better make fucking sure you're a Kubrick-level director first.
