Is it ever explained why that first guy walked up to him to begin fight clubbing? we all know that guy was just seeing a completely alone edward norton punching himself schizoing out, it makes no fucking sense why that guy approached him like "can i join?" join what? to you its just a fucking drunk maniac yammering to himself

His memory is fucked up
The first guy who saw him punching himself probably tried to help and say "yeah if you wanna fight why don't you punch me instead lmao" and they started training in the parking lot or something

Its actually explained enough in the movie is you understand and observe.
He is blacking out and "becoming tyler" and it shows him beating himself up, so it is tyler taking control, and as you could imagine when the guy game up and spoke "can we fight club" tyler would have taken control and jack would have blacked out.
Fun fact, insomnia/sleep issues is a serious start to mental health issues.

He saw a guy beating himself for no reason, so he offered the guy if he could do the punching instead, since he wanted to get beaten up anyway.
In the movie this is when Narrator/Tyler realizes Fight Club could be a thing. Before we know the twist, that looks like "if there is a fight, people would want to join in", but after the twist it looks like "if you could beat someone up with no consequences, you would". Both work to the same result: men gather together to beat each other up and that's somehow therapeutic. The guy already had the violence in him, so when he saw the masochist self-fighting he saw an opportunity.

it was AN Hallucination, the reality of it was that he was beating himself off in public, and that the others wanting to join in just shows that deep down, all men are homosexual and want to engage in public debasement.
the author was AN Homosexual and anyone who saw the film is one too, and so is anyone reading this post.
also Helena bonham Carter's character in the film is AN Hallucination, which depicts when the main character dresses up in women's clothing while alone, showing he's AN Homosexual.

The issue is pronged sleep issues.
Its a common cause or catalyst for mental health issues.
A simple short term spell of insomnia doesn't necessarily mean you are gonna have a mental breakdown, but the solution is normally drugs or herbal remedies.
I personally take diazapine and valerian root. Coincidentally the dr in fight club suggests for him to take valerian root.
If you are having prolonged sleep issues you really need to get help and try to find out what the issue is.
Can be something as simple as sleep hygiene, like to hot, humid or not humid enough in your bedroom.
Screens, diet, exercise etc.
Have to sort it out via process of elimination.
One big issue is breathing, you can vide yourself sleeping for a bit see if you are snoring or stopping breathing.
Adenoids, deviated septum can cause sleep apnoea.
I have a fan in my room, window is open nearly 24/7 too
Though I also smoke and am a heavy drinker.
I have always found it hard to sleep, getting to sleep, staying asleep and waking up

I take valerian root for that reason. It helps keep me asleep.
Diazepam to mellow my mind out to help get me asleep if I cant sleep.
Latter being a drug, former being a herbal supplement.
idk if they will work for you but i guess they would.
Of course I take them sparingly and only in extreme cases.
My philosophy is that if I took things like this regularly I am essentially becoming a drug addict and would not be able to sleep without them. Also they lose their potency.
If all else fails just get drunk until you pass out.
Might as well try the valerian root tablets first. they are inexpensive and over the counter supplements.
Also make sure you have other maintencne like a decent amount if exercise and water intake.
piss and shit before you are ready to wind down for sleep so you are not getting woke up by bladder or bowel issues, are fully hydrated, not hungry but also hove it time before sleep for food to digest.
General sleep hygiene.
Have to make the sleep a conscious event you are putting effort into doing.

Not really I am unhealthy and actually had psychosis once that was instigated by serious sleep issues over a short period of time. its why I know so much about it and have to actively focus on sleep management.
I have only had like 1 real good nights sleep in over a decade.
Good as in I woke up feeling refreshed and as if I had actual perfectly amount of sleep.

My problems are incurable.
I have a few life debilitating incurable ilnesses.
Day to day management is all I can do.
I enjoy intoxication of the mind (alcohol) and as I have got to the later years of my life I dont care too much about the health defects.
Smoking would have been better to have gave up but the booze and stogies go hand in hand. Cant stop one without the other.
The drugs and herbal remedies are there for extreme times I have sleep defects.
I take them sparingly.
