Is it common to see trailer trash reading Louis-Ferdinand Céline in the US?

Common? No, but America is weird that poor people can be smart and well-read while successful people can be absolute idiots.

If you've read a single page of Journey you're alright with me

Does Céline’s style hold up in translation?

The only hurdle I can think of is the neverending amounts of slang that the Eng translation has to explain in its terms, its English equivalent. I believe Céline referred to it as the "language of the street"

I'll have to pick it up some time.

I read him in my native Swedish and he was very snappy; I thought there was a lot of style to it. Though how much that reflects his style in French I cannot say, it certainly was distinct.

that'd be like reading Shakespeare in French, retarded

And what would you say that says about the French?

there's early and late stage Celine, I imagine a translator could compensate for the early style by aiming for mood and taking more liberties with the text but late Celine in translation there's not much else to work with, would be like taking the color out of it

Prone to negroidic tendencies which of course is ironic considering their status as the one true elite.

I was referring to prior to the present day mess.
Why does Europe fucking hate the French? Why do the English and the French seem to hate each other?
What the fuck is wrong with the French?
t. American with American education.

She was supposed to be smart in this movie.

No, but I was raised on welfare and read Journey to the End of the Night.

I know, but how do you explain that a poor high school girl living in a trailer knows French literature? Being cultured and intelligent are two different things.
Or perhaps there's a strong French cultural heritage brought by the Huguenots that still exists in Florida.

That is it?

yes, getting the domino chain going on all the monarchies with the chants and ideals and then spawning an emperor who invades everything in sight back in classic fashion legit created that lasting a culture of upset towards the french

Journey was an international smash upon release and it was seen as a fluke yet in spite of that, it reached everywhere. They try to undermine LFCs legacy because of the nazi support.

Fair enough, but she’s reading Mort à crédit. It’s nowhere near as popular as Journey (even though, in my opinion, it’s Céline’s best book). It’s not the kind of book you pick up without some cultural background.
