>Jenna Ortega plays Klara, a solar-powered “Artificial Friend” (AF) who befriends a sick child in a dystopian future where children are educated entirely from home using digital tutors. Those who can afford it buy solar-powered AFs like Klara to help socialize their isolated children.
>The trailer begins with Klara frozen like a mannequin in a store that sells companions like her. As an older model, she has waited for years to meet a human who will take her home. “How will I know if my person and I are a good match?” she asks. The footage shows Mia Tharia as Josie, a sickly girl who chooses to bring home Klara. This leads her mother, played by Amy Adams, to ask skeptically, “This one? She looks tired.”
>Josie teaches Klara everything about the world, like how stairs work, to the sound of Sonny & Cher's “I Got You Babe”. But Josie’s mother doesn’t think Klara’s the right fit, and she tells Klara that if she slips up while she’s under warranty, she won’t hesitate to return her to the store, where she will be broken down for parts for newer models.
>Entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider described the preview as looking like “an expensive flop”. “It's selling sweetness (lots of yellow) when it needs to sell less quirk and more emotion,” he elaborates. “I loved ‘Jojo Rabbit’, but I'm officially nervous about this one…”

I thought the book was disappointing. Three or four stock sci-fi clichés not all that well put together, and it can't decide which one is the central story. Klara herself is an appealing character but you really look for a bit more weight from a Nobel laureate.
Some slightly-thin novels make good films but I don't think this is one of those. My guess is it will end up feeling like a made-for-TV thing.
