Sonic CD is the major influence on the film, like how Sonic Adventure 2 was for the third film, the second influence being The Terminator franchise.

Sonic accidently breaks through time itself during his friendly race between him, Knuckles and Tails and ends up in the "Bad Future".

The Bad future is ruled by Emperor Robotnik, having taken over the world after Sonic was defeated in his timeline and enforces his power through Metal Sonic, his ultimate creation.

Amy travels to Earth instead of Tails in the Bad Future timeline, originally looking for her long brother, Sonic, but this has been changed due to the risk of "potential backlash".

Amy is a mix of Tails and Knuckles, Smart and Strong, inspired to meet Sonic after hearing of his achievements and wanting to meet him, but is trapped in the Bad Future and becomes the leader of the Freedom Fighters, a group of human rebels attempting to stop Emperor Robotnik.

Metal Sonic has three forms in the film, first being his mass produced drone body, designed after modern Metal Sonic. Second form is his original body, designed after Movie Badniks but inspired by Mecha Sonic. Third form is Neo Metal Sonic inspired.

Emperor Robotnik is just Neo Metal Sonic using his liquid metal body to mimic the doctor after his "demise", heavily implied that Metal killed him to not just to take control for himself, but for revenge. Metal believes he's the original Sonic and wanted revenge against Robotnik for defeating him and turning him into a robot, this being not true and it's very clear that Metal Sonic is insane. One of Emperor Robotnik's final video logs was him regretting the use of his own brainwaves in the development of Metal's AI, before being tackled my Metal drones and screaming.
