The biggest issue, both for game sales and reception on Switch 2, is how fucking abysmal the released and announced lineup is for the system so far (even including crossgens). Not having the kinds of games people expect and want out of a Nintendo system released after almost a year on the market, or even announced after 15 months since the system's news cycle started, is stunningly retarded.

I know it bothers Nintendo diehards and B/C tier franchise hipsters to have this pointed out, but yes: 3D Mario/Zelda, mainline Splatoon, and Smash Bros are among the most popular first-party offerings. Having new releases for those heavy-hitters out (or at least explicitly shown off) not only helps the Switch 2 itself, but helps other franchises. Few people will buy a Switch 2 just for Fire Emblem, but if it's got new heavy hitters out or coming soon, the idea of tacking more games on becomes more attractive.

A rising tide lifts all boats. Look at how many IPs and sub-IPs enjoyed a "Switch Boost" last generation thanks in large part to having other attractive games that made the system desirable - Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Metroid (among others) all saw their best individual game sales yet on the Switch. This would NOT have happened if 3D Zelda and 3D Mario weren't already released (or even just revealed), nor Smash a year later to help give these IPs further exposure later into the generation. This is even more important when your system is $450 and games are upwards of $80.

The Switch 2's early hardware sales were so explosive, in part because people assumed "oh those big hitters are just around the corner", going off the goodwill Nintendo was riding on from the Switch. But a year since that introductory showcase, and we've seen the Switch 2 already falter against the PS5 outside of Japan mere months into its life (which included its first holiday season). The PS5 has no games and you need to buy a goddamn disc drive for the current default model. (will continue)

One aspect that weakened the Switch 2's momentum is how lackluster the first general Direct (September) of the generation was, setting a less than ideal tone for the system going into the new year (not helped by trying to fill the gap with announcing third party releases that are available elsewhere, largely already having been for a while and at better resolutions/framerates; and multiple Directs dedicated to a goddamn MOVIE instead of game news). Here we are now, a third of the way into the year, and so far we've got the exact same first-party lineup for 2026 that we had lined up the better part of a year ago (with late summer/fall/early winter still being a huge question mark), because they didn't have a Direct for the first quarter like they tend to do (which would've outlined the year in more detail). Missing traditional Directs isn't unheard of, but before, that would happen due to

The problem with that is that both consumers and devs are too retarded to understand per capita, and falsely attribute higher sales to the games being better. The games sold more because there's more people to buy them, even if the games are worse, so the wrong lessons are learned.
Now if the Switch 2 sells worse but the games improve, they'll tell themselves they made the games wrong.

the new corporate heads don't give a fuck about videogames so they can't do quality control anymore. they're more than happy to release trash like the new endless ocean or the new metroid prime or drag x drive or the new mario and luigi or whatever, because to them they're all just interchangeable videogames and they don't consider the damage it's doing to their reputation.

also part of it is that they're struggling to make anything at all anymore. metroid prime 4 took forever to make because making good games is hard and Nintendo have lost the ability to make it happen consistently and in a reasonable time under their studios, and eventually they just said fuck it and released it even though it was still shit. that probably explains a lot, where instead of letting stuff cook the devtimes are getting out of hand so they're just releasing way more abortions than before.

Most of Nintendo's games have always been 7-8/10. They have 1-2 9-10/10 games a year and people just forget all the slop in between. This year Pokopia got a 90 and the OoT remake will probably be higher. Last year we had Mario Kart and DK. Next year will be Pokemon and Mario.
