The villain backstory is that an evil wizard was executed and buried under a tree and the tree sucked so much evil over the years it became a sentient tree demon and wore an armor to walk around and do evil things.

It's also one of the few FF games where there's no fooling who the main villain and final boss is. Usually they have big villains who turn out to be pawns or obstacles to a greater evil or subordinate (though FF2 had a nice twist where the villain just comes back from Hell right when his second-in-command tries to take over), but this guy is just the ultimate evil right out the gate and stays that way.

How Normies see them. (maybe I should replace the jak with Game Awards or Geoff?)

In terms of the classic 2D games, that's true. As a whole, there was also FFIX's Necron, who had jack squat to do with the rest of the story as a character and only popped up after the back-and-forth between Kuja and Garland.

And that's why it's one of the best, man.
I love Exdeath as a villain, he's honestly way weaker of a villain than his imposing figure gives off, but he's a sneaky asshole about it who will do anything he can to outmaneuver you and make you unwittingly serve his goals.
His adaptation in Dissidia, which focuses on that side of him, made me appreciate it a whole lot more.

then why do all the best ff games kick that shit to the curb? idiot

it's a recipe for decision paralysis that also doesn't express character traits. give me fixed characters any day

>it's a recipe for decision paralysis
Well you can beat the game with any job combination, including making everyone punch shit or be a healer.
>that also doesn't express character traits.
Just go with what feels right given their personality? But I guess that would require having a little imagination in a roleplaying game, who the fuck would ever want that?

>the job system is so good! you can do anything and succeed!
>just create fixed characters yourself and ignore the jobs system
i didn't like it in 3 and i don't like it now. i don't even like the license board shit in X and XII

I've beaten FFV without checking a guide nor grinding JP for days, I'm sure you can do it too anon.
Also tried doing it with only initial classes for the sake of once, and it's pretty easy, in fact probably designed around them.
>>
>>737057018
i didn't just say the job system sucks, i said it also has zero plot. if you're not playing the game for the jobs system, what are you playing it for? ff1 is simpler, ff iv is a more classic late fc/ early sfc jrpg and ff vi is better in every way. i'm not even talking about other 8-bit and 16-bit jrpgs
>>
>>737057018
>in fact probably designed around them
It absolutely is. There's a reason the Wind Crystal drops the entire FF1 job assortment on you. The only one it's missing is Red and you could convince me it's because they messed up and swapped it with Blue on accident.
They're all the classes you reasonably would ever want or need to beat the game, by design.

Go play the pixel remaster of V right now
It's a great story if you actually pay attention to it
You must be able to play the game and read the text instead of regurgitating normie opinions though like >>737056683, maybe too daunting a task for /v/.

why the fuck would i do that over emulating the snes or the patched gba versions
>It's a great story if you actually pay attention to it
it's literally FF1 meets DQ3 with an even dumber antagonist. i beg you to play more fc rpgs if you think ffv has a good, well told plot
>>737057887
don't you have to level up classes to get those secondary abilities? i didn't say it was complex, i said it was convoluted as in it makes you do a bunch of annoying bullshit

Yes, you level up a job, learn its abilities and then you can pick one of those abilities to use while in another job, if you want. Or, you can use it it while in your current job.
>it makes you do a bunch of annoying bullshit
Such as?

BD spread out the jobs way too far. In FFV you get all the jobs except Mime (which is Magic Freelancer, essentially) and the added on GBA jobs before the end of the first third of the game. You get so much time to fuck around with jobs and find your perfect build with full freedom.
You're still getting asterisks over halfway through BD, limiting your options for many different encounters unnecessarily. It's my biggest qualm with BD, because it's a good attempt otherwise at the system.
>>
>>737060729
You don't have to do that, it's all completely voluntary. The game is simply giving you choices, which you can ignore if you want.
It's not like 3 where you occassionally have to have at least one character in a certain job to progress.

the wojak is literally talking about jrpgs having tons of dungeons. 99% of morrowind is going into dungeons and killing various skeletons and missing key items because you didn't read a guide beforehand

There is literally nothing wrong with villains who are evil just for the sake of being evil
>>
>>737063756
>the wojak is literally talking about jrpgs having tons of dungeons
No its not, its talking about how JRPG fans want to focus on social relationship dating in their game and get annoyed by dungeons as that gets in the way of dating romance in the game

>>
>>
>>
>>737064483
>then the problem is with the fans, not the games
Well the games determine who the fans are. Like a dandelion attracts bees and a pile of feces attracts flies. You add dating to your game and you attract a certain kind of people
