with how detailed modern games are with environmental debris and random shit all over the place you need some way to indicate to the player that something is interactive. in the old days you could have a desk with a lamp,a puece of paper, and a can of drink on it, and that was considered detailed environments. you could put a light shining on a doorway and that was enough to lead the player along. now there's so much stuff littering every room, and complex realistic lighting, the old tricks don't work

fact
you are the retarded person that instantly gets stuck as soon as the paint is removed
i literally watched this happen live on stream in rebirth in which SE forgot to paint some climbables in the mythril cave.. and the idiot who just 5 minutes before bitched about yellow paint got stuck for hours and SE later had to update the game to paint the climables because stupid people (you) need it.
in old games you could get away with it because it wasnt as detailed and (especially in prerendered backrounds) interactables stood out like a nun in a whorehouse

fun fact in the new resident evil games the green herbs have no indication whatsover no outline, no paint, no material that stands out and people routinely run past them and the only reason they dont miss em most is because when you open the map the game marks them for you

I'm just waiting for the industry to crash after making one too many 800 billion gorillion dollar super AAAAAA games that no one gives a shit about. Nothing worth saving there. Could play ps1 titles for the rest of my life and be happy and the indie scene is thriving.

Smaller development teams, no outsourcing, shorter development periods, stop laying off hundreds of employees and then hiring them back the next week.
This kind of thing happens, because no other signposting would survive from beginning to end.

The old tricks work just as well, it's just that subtle visual design isn't being placed by one or two guys, it's being placed by a team of 40 who will continuously alter, tweak, delete and overwrite one another's work.
Any consistent design language falls apart if gameplay and visual design isn't developed together, because you can't coherently teach the player to associate signals with rewards if you don't even know what the signals will look like or whether they will be indistinguishable from background noise.

Assuming you don't have ADHD, how do you navigate the average cluttered real-world environment?
>>737049090
>turn if off
It is usually the only signposting that survives, disabling it means that you are given no coherent indication of what you can do or interact with.

No, you don't.
Especially since they always succumb to those gay as hell button prompts and item shimmer anyway.

It didn't. It was the 2nd best selling RE game up until very recently.

Fuck a smart game designer
>Did Internal testing
>Didn't meet quotas
>Iterate until a quota is met
This is the hallmark if every modern Capcom game, the quota is that much lower for accessibility reasons
Surely I'm not the only one who recalls the VIIIage director thinking people ducking 7 because it was too scary, was deemed unacceptable so they made a puppet show that essentially said "our game is not scary, please play our fun game"
All modern Capcom games are low floor, mid-high ceiling

>subtle visual cues
the point is that subtle clues are often lost in the visual chaos of modern game environments
>>
>>737046689
Just remove the yellow paint. Remove the handholding. all of it. A basic tutorial organically intertwined into the first level is all such a simple genre needs.
>b-but
So you don't want them fixed. Go suck a dick then.

Or they could just stop making every square inch of the environment look like a hoarder's home. They want to make it look "realistic" but apparently they have never actually been outside and noticed there are not a dozen ladders, crates, barrels, and other random shit every 10 feet in real life.

Kek you say this when there's literally an autist who keeps spamming a disingenuous comparison of both versions of RE4 complaining that a different area in the remake is too empty compared to a different area in the original like they are the same area.

im still upset that rockstar has popularized characters needing 3 seconds of windup before they get moving and having a turn radius. If the character doesnt spin around at the speed of light i dont care for it.

>le games are so awesome and detailed these days you have to do this! it's a good thing XD
No, all you have to do is establish early on what kind of things the player has to be on the look out for, specific kind of crates, containers and if they do miss something, it's not a big deal, if it's a key item, just have the player obtain in a mini cutscene or be given it by an npc otherwise do what games have always needed, good game design that eases the player naturally and quickly into what the rules of the game are.

Video games need to stop being afraid of video games and understand that it's OKAY to have UI elements indicate directions to go and things to interact with. It's much more immersive than having someone have gone though the game before you painting things yellow s and stuff because that's literally what must've happened.

to this day i have not heard a good argument for games to be so graphically intense. If its so hard to point the player to something they should interract with that you have to do something as obscene as yellow paint then you have failed. Every medium has a soft cap on how far you can push it before it becomes more effort than its worth and its getting to the point where graphical fidelity is more of an active harm than anything. Nobody is upset that comic book panels dont look like photographs much like nobody is upset that a risk board doesnt have film grain and chromatic aberration printed on it or a character in your ear telling you how to take russia.
if you cant competently design within the limitations of your medium maybe its time to try something else.

>that second clip
when i played this game i wonder why would you hide it in a way that you need to add paint for players to spot and shoot it

>>737046689
I wouldn’t have even thought that half the elements in this webm were interactive if it weren’t for the paint. I’m not defending this shit, but it’s obvious something needs to be done here, and paint is the laziest and most idiotic solution.

what if you just made it a little bit different instead of having an alcoholic tradie with the shakes with a botomless paint bucket going around and spilling it everywhere.

>>737046842
I think Capcom overall almost is on par with Nintendo, Disney, Marvel, etc now. But especially the modern RE fanbase is braindead.
>>737048564
>>737060224
True. Graphical intensity didn't need to go beyond early HD, or even the GameCube/PS2.
