They've just upped the predecessors price. It's well above what it launched with. So it's impossible to have better hardware that costs less.
Then there's games. The current console has a single digit amount of exclusive reasons to buy it, so it's reasonable to think this won't suddenly change for the next system.
Peripherals/system gimmick. PS has always been about graphics. When that hits the upper bound then it starts taking cues from others like the sudden announcement of 6axis after the wii took off. Only the big thing currently is portability. Something they already tried with Portal. If they make it a part of the console then it'll be seen as stagnating visually whilst also ballooning the cost.
The alternative gimmick that corporations love right now is AI. I could see them having an AI helper or means to play the games for you. More things that they could charge a subscription for that the majority of normal users will hate.

From every possible angle, they're hitting a brick wall.

Sony and most 3rd parties practically handed the Japanese market to Nintendo on a silver platter starting with the 7th generation by chasing the west. It's been nothing but a continuous decline for Playstation in Japan since the PS3, the trend is irreversible and the brand is in a death spiral much like Xbox is globally. Now many of those 3rd parties are scrambling to port their games to Nintendo platforms in the hopes that they can regain relevance in Japan, which makes things even worse for Sony who historically have been completely reliant on 3rd party companies like Square or Capcom.

The only game that's got my attention is the Guardians of the Galaxy Switch 2 edition which was already released on Switch as a cloud port. I hope it's real because it might start a trend where devs have to re-release all the cloud ports that previously couldn't run natively on Switch. Things have changed a lot since 2013/2014. People in the 2020s care much, much more about finnicky shit and "the consensus" when it comes to games. How high is the Metacritic score? How high is the framerate? What's the PC performance like? What resolution does it hit? What are Youtubers saying about it? Does it have good word-of-mouth? Literally anything except the actual gameplay.

And in 2026 we also have to deal with the weirdos (many of whom work as gaming journalists) who see Nintendo as "the big bad" and think they can "knock them down a peg" by giving their games a lower score. Every Nintendo release since the Switch 2 launch has had some weird forced narrative around it that people push because they think it will make the game flop and then Nintendo will "lose". With Tomodachi, it's the lack of online Mii sharing, which several reviewers openly admitted was the sole reason they gave it a 7/10 rather than an 8 or 9.
