Here's some tips for the base game (not the Crusader one) off the top of my head:
>don't be afraid to dynamically adjust rations and taxes based on what's going on, but don't be a retard and leave them too low (rations) or too high (taxes), either
>there's a hotkey that lets you hide buildings except for their footprint. Use this when placing walls to make sure you don't have any gaps, or the enemy AI will rape you for it
>a few macemen can absolutely mog entire squads of archers, or civilians if you rush them into an enemy settlement
>think about redundancy when planning defenses, because the AI is pretty smart about punishing weak points
A lot of it you'll just learn by playing the campaign.
Oh, and watch out for bears.Seriously, if one gets in your base it can easily go up to your HQ and kill your leader.

I don't know if one is better than the others. Basically, Stronghold (original) is 'you're in western Europe' and 'Stronghold Crusaders is 'you're in the desert fighting for the Holy Land'
I haven't played Crusaders, so I don't really know how it compares to the original. I'd expect different mechanics around economics, and stuff like a greater focus on water sources.

They're killable with spearmen or whatever the basic starting unit is, and I think you can get hunters (the civilian unit) to target them with bows from distance.
But yeah, bears fuck your base up if they wander in; they're basically the Ghandi of Stronghold and are hyper aggressive and have an urge to kill everything and everyone.

>old school RTS
This is probably only 40% RTS with the other 60% being castle management sim. Making military units is expensive, and you have a supply chain you need to setup to pump out units. (like you need an Iron Mine to get raw materials that a Weaponsmith can then make into weapons, and then you need cow farms for leather which an Armorsmith turns into armor. Then you need a peasant you can recruit into a melee unit, who now has a weapon and armor.

Having to do all the resource gathering and crafting just to make one unit definitely makes you more careful in using them, because the losses feel pretty big. I like it, but it's definitely not at all the same thing as the 'spend some quantity of a single resource to have a unit walk out of a factory a few seconds later.'

Some people definitely only played sieges and didn't worry about the logistics behind the game. Stronghold devs were smart enough to realize that and give it its own mode.

I mostly just played the campaign, but I never liked the RTT missions where it just gives you a fixed amount of troops to do an attack; I always liked the base building/castle management part a lot more.
