I think gaming was carried by veterans who have slowly drained away from the industry due to retirement or quiet quitting, and in the meantime the indie scene only got more incestuous than it already was, with younger and younger generations aging up and having mediocre skills and bad frame of reference.
What we end up with is a popularity contest where the thing indie claimed to escape of AAA only being 5 types of games on repeat, happens because millenial circlejerks talk about the same arguments amongst themselves, and base everything on perceived merits like "Rogue Likes".

We've probably all been to a Discord server. We know what's really going on.

There's no talent in the middle. It's only the circlejerk, and AAA is dying because financial people have scared off creatives by cementing their power in the Upper Management of every major developer.

There's no room for creativity in AAA because financial people call the shots based on statistics and not creative impulse, like "should we make an extraction shooter" And indies are all making similar games in a market so over-saturated that gamers have tuned out of it.
