I don't get the hype around Ghibli movies. I watched some of them when I was a kid but they are nothing special. I watched Princess Kaguya a couple of weeks ago and it was just random bullshit and non-sequiturs but everything was pretty.

I won't deny miyazaki's vision of his movies as art and they pretty auteur films, but even then, i still vastly prefer his peers like Oshii, Tomino or even Anno.

We are talking about things people consider to be the GOAT of their medium. Nobody is going to say avengers is the best film ever made. For example, Taylor Swift is only liked by young millenial/zoomer women whereas Michael Jackson is liked by both genders on every single generation, there is no competition.
Also Spirited Away is competing for the "anime" category here.

Is it okay to like MJ publically? I can't tell, some people believe in the allegations fully and say that the documentaries show that it's true without a shadow of a doubt, others kind of believe that but laugh it off ironically as a "who really knows really" and still enjoy the music and others are fully into the MJ did nothing wrong.

It's a movie, and the story of the movie was terrible. Especially the
>ooooh the moon people are coming to take me back
What the fuck do you mean the moon people are coming to take you back? The Moon was mentioned, or been eluded as part of the story exactly zero fucking times.
The "it was all in le head" dreams also irritated me as they happened more than once.
And the ending actually made me angry. Moon people come and they are some invincible gods or something and turn Kaguya into an emotionless robot while her adoptive parents cry in the background. Kaguya was barely a character but this made the movie completely pointless.

I don't think I got Last Order. I was with the whole humanity backup plot until the double-spread page with 6 whole lore dumps for alien counsel species came up before they just all talked like humans anyways. All I got after that was a vampire lady who had her entire backstory explained then let Alita win before exiting the plot, a chinese man won the tournament, and a man named Trinidad changed his name to Quadadad so he could control humanity or kill all aliens or something. Gunm to my head I could not recall anyhting about him besides his name. Then Alita finished retconning the end of Battle Angel by going back to Earth early and set up the Mars story where it turns out she was originally a tumor baby.

It's a fucking fairy tale. A grand tragedy with beauty interwoven. It's a commentary on the inevitability of Heaven and the gods. Some things in life my not seem fair or even understandable, but they are out of our hands as mere mortals, finite beings. We all return to the cosmic order in the end. Memento mori and all that.
God damn, I can't believe people like you are real sometimes. I hate to invoke the media literacy meme, but I don't know what else to call it.

generally speaking the most popular thing in a medium isn't the best just the one that reaches the perfect middle ground between "good enough" and "accessible to general audiences." OoT for example is a good game, don't get it twisted, but zoom in even a little beyond the general gaming scene to something like the zelda fandom in specific and it's rarely listed as anybody's #1. I guess there's a certain level of contrarianism inherent to that, nobody wants to be the square saying the obvious choice is their favorite, but there's something to be said about how something that's liked by all isn't as strong as something loved by some.of course MJ is an exception to this rule he's the GOAT for a reason, but I digress.
>>
>>737117701
I actually disagree. If anything it's underrated, or at least not properly praised for its full merits enough, compared to its general reception as a pretty but quirky and bizarre/random foreign kids film that won some awards.
It's Miyazaki's strongest work in most ways.

Shit take. Stories without a point of view and nothing to say aren't great. It's why Oshii's films with gits as an exception are so vapid despite having impeccable vibes at times. I guarantee you that the original fairytale has something to convey that the movie doesn't. It really goes nowhere despite being pretty.
>>
>>737117179
he's still popular enough and gets regular airplay on the radio (nevermind that the jury's still out on if he's even innocent or guilty as far as the court of public opinion goes) so even if some retard that's terminally twitter-brained seethes at you the general public won't give a shit or at most will keep it to themselves. it's not like he's someone that was definitively caught like diddy or the guy from lostprophets.
if anything I feel worse for people that like kanye west because that's a clear-cut case of a mentally unwell person being off their meds but people just got fed up and decided it didn't matter and they hated him anyway. it's like hating terry davis for his rampant racism despite the fact that it's obviously related to his untreated schizophrenia.

I rewatched it last week and it's still incredible. I can't put into words what I feel that it captures when seemingly mundane scenes like when she's standing loitering on the balcony railing and scenes like it, it's like I reconnect with a lost way of viewing the world that I felt when I was a kid but lost, and despite it being animation it just feels sooo real, it's like this hyperreal thing in a good way. And when people talk about how creative it is, it's not just that it's random shit, it's like truly tapping into some fairytale frequency, it's just unmatched.

>6 whole lore dumps for alien counsel species came up before they just all talked like humans anyways
They were humans actually, just mutated and evolved from living in other planet.
>Vampire Lady
Caerula is one giant set up for how the world came to be and how melchizedek/arthur (and her by extension) exist to safeguard humanity. And also explore how's life in the outer space (not very good)
>Tournament
Kinda. Battle Angels were actually the ones who won (Gally and Zazie were the ones on top, after tunpo surrendered and zekka was blown to the moon). Yeah, tunpo could have won against gally, but eh, he didn't want that.
>Trinidad
Space Hero turned dictator. His name is basically a reference to being god, trinidad=trinity. He felt he himself alone could be one to guide humanity. Ironically, Gally didn't care much for that, she just wanted to beat the shit out of him out of pride, and get back her friend's chip.
>Ending
Yeah, it's a strange roundabout way of getting back to the original ending of the manga. But it's also bitter, and is congurent with the story pushing her to a different place, one where she is simply unable to have the quiet life she wanted with figure. It's melancholic and bitter and really thought provoking.

It's a modern masterpiece of filmmaking and visual storytelling. People who dismiss it for being a cartoon or to be a contrarian genuinely have no idea about anything.
I remember when it premiered my city's public library was showing it in recognition of it as an artistic achievement, and my school had a branch of the library attached to it. The retarded adults responsible for playing it only showed us half of it before lunch break, saying "eh, they're not interested in this." We would then go on to watch Space Jam 8 more times.
Unfortunately this represents a great proportion of the population to this day.

playing through xenogears now, expected it to be some end of evangelion mindtrippy shit, so far it's just jrpg shit with sprinkled in nods to biblical shit but never deepdives into it.
Coming up on disc 2, this shit better jump into overdrive or I'll be very disappointed. Just calling a split personality guy Id isn't enough to blow my mind over Jungian stuff after having jrpg game of thrones for 50h and , you gotta go a bit deeper than that.

I want to believe what you wrote, but the movie really is just aimless and the character just hating her existence until an even crueler fate awaits her. If she had actually come to terms with her situation and gained some gratitude for her life before the inevitable cosmic destiny swept her away it would have meant something. Your strawman smoking PSA remark is exactly the type of overreaction people say when called out on meaningless aimless pieces of art, it's just ridiculous man.

Have you honestly never read a fairy tale? I'm reading through Arabian (1001) Nights right now. They always have this tone and style, of bad things (and good things) just happening suddenly, almost without reason, to people who don't necessarily deserve it. Kaguya being structured the way it is is very much intentional.
Again, the point is that we all die in the end, so make your peace with fate. Maybe she failed to do that. You could even read reincarnation into it, because she doesn't really "die," she's reborn in a spiritual sense. I'm not literate enough in Eastern religion and philosophy to go into every detail of it, but you can pick up on a vibes level what it is about, so it's odd to me you would totally miss the blatant theming unless you're just completely shut off to anything that isn't explicitly spelled out as a South Park PSA.

I think normalfags need to watch other anime films besides Spirited Away.
On second thought, that's a horrible idea. Let the normiecattle contain themselves in their Ghibli/Disney bubble.

I don't like The Godfather but it's nice to see Coppola's work as seen as the goat. Apocalypse NowReduxdeserves that title.

>Music
Probably something classical. Michael Jackson was popular and had a great voice, but he was hardly the best.
>Novel
Ulysses or Hamlet.
>Game
Public opinion would say something like Super Metroid or GTA SA.
Personally I’d say DMC 3.
>Tranime
Evangelion
>Film
The Godfather is a classic and I don’t mind that pick, but I prefer Italian neorealism.
>Manga
Berserk fell off a cliff after conviction.
If you had to pick an unfinished edgy seinen, Vagabond is better.

Takahata added a lot of shit to the folk tale, so the movie has a lot of to said that was not there in the original tale and that is consistent with his previous movies (GotF, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko). Things like living among nature within a community vs removed from it in the isolation that comes with status. Or finding joy amidst sorrow, and that the former is worth enduring for the latter, something Buddhism rejects and something Kaguya realises too late. She even gives a small speech about this before they wipe her mind.
The folk tale is just an elaborate explanation of why Mt Fuji emits smoke and that's about it.
