Is SotC really that good of a game?

Watch a video essay and form your own opinion.

you had to be there
>>
No.

It's a cinematic experience. As a game it's mostly alright, a couple of the colossi are more annoying than fun, and the ending is weak. But it's really for the joy of racing across the fields on Agro, the visuals of clambering up a raging colossus, and the emotions of the blaring symphonic soundtrack.
>>
there is nothing quite like it.
>>
>>737113005
Surely the decades of positive reception weren’t simply lies.
>>
>>737113005
yeah, I seriously don't know why nobody tried to copy it. It's been over 20 years, I would've thought even some indie dev would have taken a crack at it by now.
>>
>>737113005
yes it was peak playing it on the ps2

I wish there was an old enough build on Hidden Palace that had additional collossi. I fucking love vaporware, my trans bros
>>
>>737113269
Look at the behind-the-scenes stuff and you'll realize that most indies lack the capability to even make a bad copy, while big studios lack the risk-appetite since no one else is doing it
>>
It's ok, nothing that special compared to everything else coming out at the time from Japan
>>
I prefer Ico
>>
>>737113269
there is multiple copies but it doesnt hit the same
like praey for the gods https://store.steampowered.com/app/494430/Praey_for_the_Gods/?curator_clanid=4777282
>>
>>737113005
Yes.
It's so good that the dogshit, bug-ridden remake is still a joy to play through multiple times.

I hate PS3 and PS4

It exists, a lot of info on it are being held back by some people.
>>
>>737113005
>>737114367
Both masterpieces
>>
>>737114820
Remake is buggy but 60fps
Remaster is 30fps and generally solid.
Original runs between 10 and 20 fps. Don't know if emulating fixes that.
>>
>>737114820
if emulators can fix the shitty fps, its better to play the original
>>
>>737115040
>>737115065
>FPS
don't really give a shit as long as it is somewhat stable 30
t. bought PS3 just for the original Demon's Souls
>>
>>737115116
Then play the PS3 version. It retains the artstyle of the original and runs at stable 30fps according to my memory.
>>
>>737113005
Absolutely not, no
>>
>>737114820
Ps2 is the only real answer.

Lol
Lmao even.
Ps3 version completely butchered the lighting system.
>>

yes, it's a masterpiece

SotC is what got me into playing games and trying to read deeper into the themes. I grew up playing a lot of story games but usually just engaging with the gameplay and ignoring the plot minus the cutscenes like MGS and Morrowind but I spent hours wandering SotC looking for shit to find and trying to sneak into places. I got onto the roof at the garden and felt like I discovered something amazing.

How did Ico change so much graphically between E3 2000 and what we got in late 2001?

Crazy how the PS2 was the last era of truly great games
>>
You think Ueda will ever make another love story like SotC again? Ico and TLG are friendship stories
>>
I love all of Uedas games.
Shame he takes so long making his games now.
Should just revert back to PS2 fidelity games.

Yea.
You can feel the intent behind it.

Ueda is a cute

I played it for the first time four years ago on a PS2 and I thought it was fantastic. Framerate is clearly ass but it honestly wasn't as big of a detriment as I thought it would be.

>Crazy how the PS2 was the last era of truly great games
See, this is where uncs lose me. You basically admit you're just going off nostalgia. There were tons of great games during the PS3 era
>>
>>737113005
yes
play it and find out for yourself
it's not that long

I played it when I was like 13, it didn't feel real, it was too good to be true.

I didn't speak a word of english back then, I had to figure out everything.

>hardware upgrade that handles better lighting and textures compared to last gen
>"why is ps2 worse?"
are you fucking retarderino?
>>
>>737118846
NTA but i think i know what his talking about.
QRD: There was a group o people who got in contact with a GenDesign dev and got a bunch of stuff from him and never shared with anyone online, one dude got hold of some itens of these cucks and leaked them here but we never got anything beyond that.
>>
>>737119589
Yeah it's clearly an upgrade and the PS3 version is the definitive version of the game.
What are we arguing about again?
>>
It's boring "art" shit. Most of your time will be spent aimlessly wandering around a boring, empty overworld, which only exists to pad out time between boss encounters. If not for the pointless "exploration" bullshit you could finish the entire game inside of an hour.
>>
With the exception of the last colossus, all the other 15 colossus can be reached in less than 5 minutes
>>
>>737118470
This is a perfect example of an artist being in charge of design (left), and a by the numbers guy with an arts degree (right). While right is 'technically' correctly lit and even by every textbook measure, it fails to capture the MOOD of the setting, something that is lost on non-artists who are incapable of seeing the bigger picture.
>>
>>737113005
It's a unique game. I honestly didn't enjoy the gameplay of it that much, the main character is extremely sluggish and awkward to control, and if you mess up you get kicked off to the ground and have to make your way up again. It gets pretty frustrating when it happens several times over and the main culprit is just how the character controls. But then there are some moments that just feel incredibly epic in a way that no other game has matched, which makes up for the bad moments. Also everything else about it is top notch. The world, the atmosphere, the music, how the story is told, it's just perfect.
>>
>>737113005
Only the PS4 version
>>
>>737118470
Literally the exact same visuals but at higher resolution, retarded unc
>>
>>737115769
GAYUS LOL
>>
Can't wait for the decompilation of SotC to finish.
>>
>>737113005
Yes, and the Remake is too
>>
>>737121832
Is there any way to track their progress? I'm curious too
>>
>>737124726
No.
>>
>>737124726
Only because it's the same game still. In my opinion it's uglier overall thanks to Bluepoint not having a real art team. And it has more bugs.
>>
>>737116785
sony cancelled the original game only to poorly port it to ps4 later
>>
>>737115226
>>737119236
>>737121065
The PS2 version is the only non-butchered version.
The remake is especially terrible.
>>
>>737113005
To this day, the realization during the bird colossus fight that the game wanted me to grab its wing and let it take me up into the air is one of the coolest moments I’ve ever had playing a game.

The uncertainty up until the very last moment it hit me, then the wind effects and the musical swell when it worked, fucking chefs kiss.
>>
>>737128047
Sadly the PS2 version also runs at average 15 fps. That was fine enough for me when I was a kid but not anymore.
Whenever I replay the game, I'll play the PS3 version because it's close enough visually to the PS2 version, while also running smoother.
The remake is 60fps but also looks like a "nintendo hire this man" -tier of a project visually so I'd rather just play the PS2 or PS3 versions instead.
>>
>>737128502
False and you can just emulate it at 60+ fps anyway.
The PS3 version isn't good and has gameplay bugs that make it more annoying to play.
>>
>>737128591
Works on my PS3.
I'm be waiting for that decompilation project to finish before I play it on my PC.
>>
>>737128219
That was the peak for me as well. The song is so fucking good too as you're trying to withstand the massive force of wind while crawling across his wings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmXSM8Npa9Y
>>
it's outstanding and nobody seriously contests that fact. denying it would be as bold faced and retarded a lie as saying water isn't wet. that said, there is a distinction between just a good game and a game that a person will like. it's one i would say you should try to play through at least once in your life with no spoilers or any shit like that.
>>
>>737113005
How can an empty open world be so full of soul?
>>
>>737129815
It's actually not empty. The terrain is varied, there's lizards to find in lots of corners and most of all it's just really pretty.
