Heres a hot tip for you, caring about endgame efficiency is for Autistic people or people who are looking to make real money on the game by selling stuff using 3rd party sites. I put an unhealthy amount of time into this game in a short time back in 2024 and sure winging it can suck but hell even following builds things can still snowball. You either like the experience enough to deal with it or bail for something easier to digest. I’m done with PoE and D4 but still waiting for Last Epoch to hit console as that’s supposedly a pretty good middle ground.

most of them come from altering and experimenting with previous existing builds which themselves come from ancestor builds and so on and so on. The original first 'build' is just cookie clicker but with skeletons instead of cookies.
At some point, players realized they can kill more than one mob at once and thus Ground Slam was invented.
At some point, people accidentally realized they can just play with the walk button, and thus Righteous Fire was invented.
Eventually, mankind no longer wanted to walk, and Flicker Strike was invented.

Now, players just enter a map, hold one button down and read Dostoyevsky and Ulysses on the side, while the map completes itself.

Fun fact: Despite the maximum level of 100 being very easily achievable, the highest DPS flicker build on PoE Ninja (2.5 BILLION DPS) isnt even level 100, because the player in that chair simply atrophied before being able to put a few more maps in the map device.

The fun I had in this game was from trying to finish the acts in HC with Righteous Fire from 16, did a necromancer to start every league to farm alts for dousing pots and then rammed my head against the RF leveling wall until I was out of the dousing pots. have like a 1000 hours in it, never did meta builds and never succeeded either and it was still fun.

My biggest gripe with this game is it has lost all class identity in pursuit of power gaming. It's cool that you can have so much freedom in your build to the point you can min max and do a bullion damage and get a Mageblood in a day but what even is your character at that point? What's the difference between a Templar or a Assassin if they're all just abusing power charge mechanics.in their builds?
Part of the enjoyment in an RPG for me is (role)playing out the fantasy of a Druid character or a Berzerker or whatever, without that element your character just might as well me a white canvas blob. Is that then even an RPG anymore?

I enjoyed PoE 1 for a while but its just really dated at this point. PoE 2 is OK but it has a lot of issues.

The only MMO worth a shit anymore is OSRS. WoW is OK but its insanely poopsock and overly complicated to appeal to the esports crowd. ARGPs are fun because its a mostly solo grind adventure, until you unlock all the seasonal rewards. Then you just try out different shit or try to push the hardest content with your build. In D4 for example pushing Pit level is a big thing.

I like PoE i have several thousand hours but its pretty bullshit. There was a point where you could hit certain benchmarks and be fine. Now i'll play a strong build and still get my shit checked in T16's and it gets harder than that. There's so many dimensions to a character its hard to parse why your character is good / bad / failing. Crazy game really. It's probably better than the alternative which is D3 / D4 which is super streamlined so you can't fail
