Why wasn't Phantasy Star as popular as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy?

Quite frankly it’s a miracle PS 2-4, Online and all the spin-offs were even made.I’m currently developing a RPG meant to serve as a spiritual successor to the OG games (1-4), so seeing this thread was a nice surprise.

because they didn't make a 5 and pivoted to an MMO-lite. Granted, that game was a big success and very good, so it's no shock they stuck with it and never went back to the JRPGs.
People of the time did like the games, though.

1 is not very good and the chick is annoying but it's still a better game than FF1. I am shocked that FF made it to 3 when it started getting better considering how shit the first two games are
>t. I was there

I like the Phantasy Star science fantasy aesthetic. Sega really needs to revive this series and Shining Force.

Your pic literally tells you why. Who in the fuck owned a Master System? Now who owned an NES? Probably isn't easy to sell people on your hip new IP when everybody and their dog is focused on your competition. That was honestly SEGA's biggest problem. They made good games, but the company itself was always lagging behind Nintendo and eventually Sony to gain people's attention. The Mega Drive/Genesis was their big break then it all went downhill with the Saturn.

Should I play the ps2 remake? I just love that the pso guy did cover art for it because it's one of my favourite character design/styles in all of videogames.

Is not that bad, but personally I think the real deal breaker is that the remake simplifies the mapping too much. Phantasy Star 1 is legit the sweet spot of allowing the player to get lost and enjoy it but without pulling non-euclidean Wizardry levels of bullshit

Anon, Phantasy Star mapping was EASY (except for a couple of things at the end of the game). Compare with Wizardry
>Dark zones
>Teleporters
>Rotators
>Fake walls and hidden doors
>Pits and mines
>One way doors
>Chests with traps, including random teleporters
>Your only in-game tool to know where you are is fucking Dumapic, which only tells your coordinates and where are you facing.
And around the time we're talking Wizardry IV was soon to be released, which included even more bullshit

It has an easier versión, the PS1 one and don't know if is fully translated but some months/a year ago people finally translated the Saturn version of Wizardry VI, so there's hope to see the not so bullshit edition of Wizardry IV in english
