>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes. Please do not post your Little Sister farms
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes. But adventure mode is boring. /tg/ has a general for fortress mode playthroughs but you can share here too!

I can't possibly think of a more retarded mindset to have as a dev for a sandbox game.
Cutting down the bloat and cranking up the challenge is cool. But treating the game like a competitive FPS, taking away option from the player on worldgen and being hostile towards modding? Utterly braindead.
And this isn't even the worst thing going on with the fork. For some fucking reason the dev is also doubling down on the tedium.
Skills take longer to learn, fast learned trait isn't selectable anymore and most practice recipes don't exist. Even basic zombies will fuck your shit up too, so leveling up melee skills is always a huge gamble (and healing takes forever now, exacerbating the issue).
Dev cut off skill rust on grounds of characters not lasting long enough for it to matter, and then makes it so it takes two in game years to bring a skill to a workable level. What was the thinking behind this?
It pisses me off because there's some good ideas sandwiched between the truly horrid decisions, like the aforementioned ability to [g]rab zombies and chuck them down balconies.
And it's somehow more fun than DDA despite all. But that isn't saying much.

First win on Jvpiter Hell.
Disgusting build, just start firing once and everything is dead by the time I get to cover. I did get carried by Hammerhead though.
Is there a "true" ending ? It ended sort of abruptly.
>>

I should really just take things slow but the O + Tab siren call is too tempting, the early game is just so bland
>>562529651
or that, maybe I'll set it to 70, might help a bit
The problem is more jumping straight into a pack of Gnolls with little recourse and I'm left quaffing random shit hoping to Xom that it's a healing potion
Skill issue, I know

This floor is why I think War Pike is underrated. Each heavy weapon solves a different issue, sword/hammer for single target bullshit, axe for surrounded. Pike is best against centaurs and casters that like to keep range which are the most dangerous stuff. Nothing else has an easier time against Dar mages and Ogre shamans. Gonna take a break and then die immediately when I get back like usual.
>>
>>562536603
>Each heavy weapon solves a different issue, sword/hammer for single target bullshit, axe for surrounded. Pike is best against centaurs and casters that like to keep range which are the most dangerous stuff.
yeah they can be great, and i really should break my habbit of always going for the normal versions of them, but fuck if the hype of getting something like multiplicity on an axe isnt worth gambling a run away sometimes
>>
>>562537250
It's good to get into a habit of grabbing vault weapons and using them early to ID via kills and you can use the call function to write on the weapon what else is in the vault when it turns out to be +0. One str pot with 13str lets you use swords axes and rapiers well enough. After a certain point you just have to give up on getting runics.

>>562546571
If you have a spear/pike/whip you can kill them through doors. What normally happens is they walk through the door then take a step back using their enhanced movespeed, but you can ignore this with ranged weapons. If you don't have one and don't have consumables or an attack staff you have to use the stairs, you get one hit in then switch levels and repeat.

Maybe I can't read combat stats as well, but looking at the stats of many combat knives in Cataclysm (image is TLG) always bother me, because they look kinda shit.
Hunting knife, a tool that even advertises as being for butchering than combat, seems better than the trench knife, a knife that's specifically for combat.
>>
>>562585030
Stab is nicer than cut, and the block ablity is also good. I think weight factors in somewhere other than just making the weapon slower, but don't recall how.
You can also mount a trench knife as a bayonet IIRC
>>
>>
>>
>>562593260
It reduces damage when you get attacked but has a chance to deteriorate your weapon (or arm/leg guards if limb blocking). The number of times you can block per turn depends on your martial style and weapon skills.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>562607159
The ancestor trivializes basically any enemy that doesn't lock down your movement, because you can just walk away if the fight is going badly. If you're not getting caught in bad positions then you never really have to worry about bad dice rolls. It's a very consistent god if you keep it between you and the enemy and don't fight anything without your ancestor up.
>>
>>562593260
When you get attacked, the attack goes through several layers of defenses. First, you attempt to dodge to negate all the damage. If that fails, you attempt to block. If you can't block (no arm/leg blocking ability or no wielded weapon blocking trait and the necessary skill to use said trait), the damage is filtered through worn armor values. If you DO block, depending on the quality of your blocking ability, the incoming damage is reduced by a percentage, and only then does it hit armor. You normally get 1 dodge and 1 block attempt "per turn", so if multiple enemies are attacking you at the same time, the attempts get exhausted and your armored body gets hit directly. I'm not sure what "per turn" actually means though. Is it one second? Or the next moment you recover from an action? Dunno.
Martial arts can add extra attempts to your block or/and dodge stack. Martial arts also enable arm and leg blocking. "Brawling" gives you arm blocking for example. Martial arts can also directly improve the effectiveness of blocking.
The trench knife is more difficult to obtain than say the army bayonet almost every zombie soldier drops. The army bayonets have much higher damage output than the trench knife, but they can't block. If you're fighting common zeds, you probably don't need blocking at all after a point, so using a bayonet would be "better". Bayonets are also simpler to replace due to their abundance, if you'd rather avoid doing repairs. Fighting harder hitting opponents you can't dodge well would sometimes be better with a trench knife, although the bayonet's higher damage could end the fight quicker as well.
So what DO you put in your ankle sheath as the very last resort weapon? I just use common bayonets anyway because I like ending the fight quicker, and the trench knife is worse at piercing armor. Trench could be better as a primary though. You could always roleplay mr stabby and carry a blocking knife, a stabbing knife, and tons of throwing knives.

House of Necrosis is quite fun. Enjoying doing a couple of runs while having my morning coffee before I get ready for work. Each run is short, even for a mystery dungeon game and its very enjoyable in small chunks. A big problem is though is that the game itself seems to decrease the brightness of my monitor which persists after the game is closed. Only thing that fixes is a restart of the computer.
>>
>>

I don't understand why the game recommends Strength as the main stat for the Withering One in ToME.
Just shy of literally everything they do scales with magic, is darkness or blight element, and has a minimum range of 3. Sure, they have a conditional free mainhand swing attatched to two of their skills, but why in the world wouldn't I throw a darkness staff on them and just scale my skills harder while pumping cunning for crit instead of slapping some limp-dick bump damage on top? Is there something I'm not seeing? Because this feels like a trap.
>>
>>562630054
No, because too many other people had that thought, and the devs nerfed the fighter based on usage statistics. The battlemage and hexer were always good, and they didn't get nerfed like the fighter, so just use them.

I'm assuming it's an out of depth spawn. Shit like finding greyswandir laying on the ground randomly in nethack. I mean, it's fun to find cool shit rarely sometimes and doesn't really fuck up balance because anyone who was going to win will win regardless and everyone else is just going to die.
>>
>>562704863
sure
i mean shit like finding 14 different scrolls and no scroll of identify early is just bad design i guess.
playing as a fighter or wiz you always get useless rings early, if minotaur you always find good helmets that you cant wear.
>>
>>562705060
Eh, the game isn't supposed to give you things you need, and definitely isn't supposed to make sure you don't things you don't need. If it did, you wouldn't keep wanting to crank the slot machine. It's not only good design, it's what makes the game fun.

I'll probably get banned for this, but its a game, and a roguelike at that-
I've replayed this game several times now, and gotta say its quite enjoyable. It's not overly complex, and its got fun takes on weapon usage and environmental kills (mainly bonking people with telekinetically launched objects.)
It's got a story. Kinda divorced from the actual material, but who cares really.
It's free, and doesn't look the worst for what it is.
Kinda hope they add more content to it. Maybe something for after the main story, new weapons, changes to the combat like being able to use your magic or tossing a grenade while reloading. Some new trials would be neat.

One of the refugee center quest objectives is to get data from some lab. I dunno if this one is particularly shitty or if the quest one is supposed to be this type, but it has a tear in reality on the ground level. I've been avoiding the place for a long time because I heard that cancer starts pouring in when it's in your reality bubble, but I wanna finish the quest, so I went in. This lab is a 5x5 complex with a parking lot on one side, the main building on the other, and an outer wall surrounding the place. Used a sledgehammer to break the outer wall in a corner and started clearing hostiles looking for the stairs down. Among the expected security/scientist/soldier zombies and the security bots, there was also a gracken, slimes, 2 unseen hunters, a thing called a "blank body" I've never seen before. I'm starting to think this is some sort of xenobiology lab or whatever. Still looking for the stairs, I then ran into a flaming eye. I've been stared at by flaming eyes before with disastrous results, and I just ran then. I now have a 5 point anchor, and I heard it protects you from their aids stare, so I killed it in melee. Still unsure if it does anything, but I kept checking my status during and after the engagement and there was neither nausea nor "tainted mind", so I guess it does. Now I ran into a "star vampire". I heard it was some particularly dangerous thing, but either my character got lucky with dodges, or the hub soldier armor is particularly good for them. The vampire died without the character taking damage. But now I'm wondering if it's the lab or if it's the portal spawning these things.
Would it be a better idea to manually tunnel into the necessary underground level to avoid dealing with the possibly portal-spawned monsters? Maybe I should look into getting in from the subway tunnels?
>>
Do you guys think the roguelike format makes it too hard to tell a good story? Like you need that randomization and replayability, so a set narrative doesn't really mesh with those elements? I know Qud has a pre-set story, but it's the only one I can think of.
>>
>>
>>562726998
I'm working on a roguelike with a cohesive story.
My opinion is that you just need to isolate out the less important story details such as
>how the character gets from point A to point B
>what kind of challenges they meet along the way
And flesh out the story at point A and point B individually, then you can still write a cohesive story while maintaining a lot of roguelike aspects
>>
>>562727232
This is the kind of thing I've been looking for, honestly. I always wanted a game that would cut to another form of presentation, like comic book style or something, when you entered a new area of the game. I guess it just doesn't happen because roguelikes are made by people without a lot of resources or expertise in other fields.

How do I know when I spent too much time in Quasimorph and my save is borked? Right now everyon is around Tech level 5-6, I can do lower difficulty missions but as soon as it gets harder I don't stand a chance anymore. Got tons of stuff from missions and my proxy corp to trade, but I am severely lacking higher tier armor, armor components and most of all can't travel around that much anymoreto buy more stuff. I yeeted most of my good equimpent trying to do the mission that get syou the fission bomb so I can build the Quasimorphic drive, but by now my gear has degraded so much that my guys get oneshotted by the Plasma pistols, so I'm kinda stuck. What to do?
>>
>>
>>562726998
It would be pretty easy to have a "proper" story in any *Bang game, just force you back to town after x floors and exposition dump. Stuff like Etrian Odyssey's main story could be grafted onto a roguelike.

Grenades are your friend.
Print a gorillion thermal grenades and pick an enemy whose armor doesn't cover fire and raze the station to the ground. Ideally an infiltration mission since you're bound to merc an elite squad+you can swipe the local station owner's gear too. Did you pick a lame proxy corp because why aren't their lvl6 guns and armor helping?

It's also my begrudging choice on Kobold because you have short vision range, high stealth, and low HP. All that leads to getting extra fucked by marks. Sure you would love to pick WJC on a stealthy character, but Ash is just better.

What you call "winning the game" is only an achievement/feels good the first time you figure out what works early game. Which takes some time and IS hella fun, but even if you do slightly suboptimal or even handicapped/themed runs after that, you'll already know stuff like "oh, a bloated zombie, I'll put on my PBA mask and let it harmlessly explode in my face" instead of thinking "what manner of horrifying monster will come out of that meat cocoon? is it gonna explode? shower the area with acid? better shoot it with the biggest gun I have from afar and see what happens".
Having the option to skip the grind you've figured out before to play with the bigger toys immediately can be more fun as well. Nobody says you gotta do zero to hero runs every time. If you're intent on balancing it, even setting-related or self-imposed handicaps to offset an overpowered start aside, you can always also intentionally roleplay an adrenaline junkie and be more daring in combat, for a different kind of rush and an equal amount of danger despite your advantages and metagame knowledge. Like, you'd normally avoid going below three full stamina bars in melee with enemies still present, or retreat to restock once you go through 2/3 of your on-person ammo, or you'd normally back off to heal up the moment you got more than a few bars of limb damage and/or pain you can't offset with weak painkillers anymore. I mean, it's common sense that keeps you alive. Well, you can change things up by breaking that. Shoot until your last bullet, pick up random guns from dead bodies and shoot their ammo as well, and only retreat once you're down to a single grenade you'll use for your escape. Or try to push melee fights as close to the edge as possible instead of playing it safe. Aim to fight until you win in a glorious way instead of always taking the safest approach. It'll get your character killed eventually, but it'll be fun.

>>
>>562924387
It's a real roguelike, with a lot of interesting design choices, like having a persistent town on the surface (which was a new idea at the time) The main quest is the aforementioned potion to save your daughter's life rather than something airy like acquiring an amulet for your god. There's two separate dungeons, with the volcano dungeon being kind of a shorter hard mode dungeon. The level generation is unusual and has a lot of variety room and level layout.
It's a really charming roguelike.

Ideally this genre should make it easy to develop interesting game systems with complex interactions. You generally have a minimal graphical style, top-down view, and turn-based combat. That means you can convey more complex game states to the player in a readable way, and the players have time to digest all that information and make smart choices. IDEALLY, roguelikes would be the most cerebral game genre and not o-tab simulators.
>>
>>
>>562939581
At the very least, roguelikes would be a good place to do diablo loot autism and "0.5% critical damage to poisoned enemies at night" skill stuff. It's a pain in the ass elsewhere but would fit in here.

Hooray! Third win ever in FrogComposband. Been like two years since I last won it, I usually start playing too loosely around CL35 and get wrecked.
Chaos-warrior was fun, a bit like Xom in DCSS. Ended up getting pretty shitty rewards on level up during this character's 20s, but then I got some nifty mutations later on so it evened out. J fight went surprisingly well with "only" around 650 dmg/round, my fat demon-lord form AC + resists helped a lot, used maybe 10 !*healing* and 3 !Life.

If it's BN, Alternators work by taking away engine power and transferring it as "epower".
As we're bound to the rules of thermodynamics, this process is about 70% efficient, so if you place this on an electrical engine, it will just drain more power.
7.5kW generators are also alternators, but on steroids. About 10x as strong as a truck alternator. Great for charging batteries in super heavy vehicles like tanks and transferring back smaller electric cars
>>562563879
They don't know what they're doing. The closest direction they are going for is Zomboid or neo scavenger; loot and move on.
The catch is, these games are actually designed for that, whereas DDA just throws a bunch of systems that are just minor nuisances and "manticores" waiting to waste your time/set you back.
The meltdown of r*dditors are hilarious, they're trying so hard shift the game back to its origins, but haven't read documentation's FAQ, which explicitly states the fork isn't a democracy and the "project owner" (alongside his simps) has the final say.
...So why bother?

I just got a 5 point anchor from a mercenary (?) with a hangover from a bar after I paid it 1 hub01 coin. You can then send it to the hub01 counter for them to research it after paying like 2 gold coins and you have to wait for like 5 days for them to finish """researching""" it. I assume the item starts doing something only after you've done this tedium
>>
>>563052854
Yes, there's a wall tile there, and the tile looks square, but the tile for a staff for example is a straight diagonal line, and the tile for a scroll is literally a music note, so I would make the argument that while the wall LOOKS square, it's only that way to convey information more easily to the player, and the wall could actually be round. So assuming there isn't something about the dungeon that makes the walls incredibly unnatural, the walls should be about consistent in their distance from the player, and therefore there isn't anything to prevent you from going diagonally.
>>
>>563053491
Maybe it's been changed since, but I'm playing 0.H currently, and I've killed like 5 or 6 flaming eyes after that post, both in melee and at range. Wearing the anchor with a charged battery and turning it on protected me from the stare. I haven't seen any special hub dialogue about it, but I only trade with them at this point and maybe I just wasn't wearing the anchor when I stopped by. I can't find much on google, but it seems like the hub research just integrates the anchor into their armor.
>>
>>562726998
Depends on what you consider good. A complex handcrafted story is completely impossible to do. But roguelikes can definitely make do with AI generated-ahh surface-level stories like the ones from Square Enix's Octopath Traveler series.

CDDA Lore is pretty good, it's a deus ex conspiracy featuring netherworld creatures, terraforming amorphous blob, deathwalkers, fungi and triffids, all in a happy agreement to destroy a hapless species of hairless apes incapable of making a combat-ready powered suit or a flashlight last more than 2 hours.
Thankfully they left fully stocked killer turrets ready to serve human viscerae to our hungry guests, like the good neighbors we are.
You won't get that stuff from Frank Herbert, that's for sure.
>>
>>563060367
Is it too much work to make all the monsters fight each other? I thought that kind of reputation/faction system is exactly what roguelike devs love to autistically simulate down to an unnecessary level of detail.
>>
>>563063508
Issue with factions fighting is that often it just incentivizes the player to sit back, watch and loot afterward. The alternative is either to make monsters run away (which is like the least monstery thing ever) or just not engage in combat with each other in the first place.
>>
>>563063508
>infighting
Not at all, i did this in my heavily edited copy of BN. But i had to change a lot of things, since blobs are really weak and fungaloids too meekly passive. It trivializes some things like flaming eye, which will be easily swatted by your average zombie scientist.
So i had to buff most creatures and added more monsters capable of nether stare debuff / bleeding / infected cuts.
Most monsters i had to increase stats and aggression, notably Gracken. Once a happy sight, now really dangerous.
I like huge chaos, after all, isn't this one massive fight for control over planet earth? It also adds a possibility to use it as an escape strategy.
However, even a shitty small blob can see and track you reliably, slime the fuck out of you then bring his buddies to penetrate every single cavity you have, including your belly button, ala matrix style.
>>
>>563063996
>Issue with factions fighting is that often it just incentivizes the player to sit back
Which is exactly what happens. Had a bee hive spawn near a town, could loot the whole town zed free, bees are pretty chill if you dont get too close
>>
>>563063996
...Well, we already have that, insects are always aggressive and you can use them as bioweapons...
Cleaning everything with guns gets boring after awhile.
>>563065339
Ants do that too, and if you're cheeky you can stack a bunch of eggs in a place you want to be cleaned, come back two weeks later and reap the harvest + free chitin
Bonus points if using acidic ants or wasps for turrets, since they're tagged with HARD_TO_SHOOT.
>>
>>
>>563067575
No. You get almost every weapon in every run. The only real RNG that could fuck you is getting fast enemies offered to you in the early stages, or getting bad bosses that you don't have damage resistance against.

Risk of Rain has good world lore, and so does Dead Cells. But I guess that's not story.
Dead Estate has a good story, but it is separate from the gameplay, it assumes only one run is real.
Curse of the Dead Gods has a good mesh of story and gameplay and a good story. For a more well-known game that also has good story and it integrates the roguelike aspects: Hades.
I just realized Brotato and Risk of Rain have the exact same story, but with potatoes instead of humans.
>>
>>563135224
Hades' story integrating into the gameplay is detrimental to its own narrative.
Any game that tries to be special and explains respawning (including the soulslike) is just setting itself up for failure.
It's an alternative to save/load, not the lore.

I don't really understand why people call them that but I do use HJKL for cardinal directions, YU for upward diagonals and BN for downward diagonals. It is nice when a roguelike has mostly keyboard commands so you don't need to move your hand back to the mouse.

>>
>>563175109
Yes, if I'm on my laptop, where I don't have a numpad, then I use the vi movement keys. Why not, I mean the arrow keys are over there, the diagonals are right here, and I don't wanna have to move my hand back and forth all the time. It doesn't take long to get the feel for HJKL

What's so interesting about it other than the Blob (which itself is still an eldritch substitute for the Combine)? The entire plot is just a homage to different video games. The dimensional merge is Half Life, the power armor/bionics arms race between the west and China is Fallout, and all the weird horror elements are a mix of Junji Ito, Lovecraft, and Geiger.

NTA, but if you mean the cultist guys, there's a random NPC quest line that starts with "Find a relic" where you look for a generic "small relic" item found in museums and display cases in houses and whatever. Then you get "Recover Priest's Diary", where a random generic house gets marked on your map and you need to retrieve the newly spawned book. And after that, you get the last quest - "Investigate Cult", where a "cabin" gets marked on your map. The place is boarded up, and there's a "wraith" spawning endless shadows inside the house, a small basement with about a dozen cultist mobs named "dementia", and a small room with a "blood sacrifice" further in the basement. I think there's some kinda skull or bone in that last room that you need to take back to the quest giver to finish the errand.
The wraith is tough if you choose to fight it head on because it spawns literally infinite shadows and it's unlikely that you can kill them all in time normally. The shadows individually disappear after like a minute of existing, so their number is still kinda capped, but there's still an endless stream of them when you're close. Apparently if you come during the day you can exploit its fear of sunlight. I just managed to kite some of the shadows away and chucked a grenade next to the big guy. You don't actually need to fight the wraith though, as the entrance to the basement is right behind one of the windows. The cultists themselves are weaker than ferals, and the sacrifice is a mob that does some mind attack when you approach, but I dunno what it does because it failed to work in my case, and I killed it before it could try again.

How realistic is it to gather 40 solid hydrogen canisters within a reasonable amount of time? I wasn't grabbing any chems from zombie scientists, but now I found a working CVD machine and it needs 40 canisters to diamond coat a katana. Also, does anyone know if the coating would still let me use martial arts with said katana?

>>563286106
I'd say about 1 in 10 lab barracks I raided had solid hydrogen in 'em but they have 25 each

In BN you can substitute gaseous hydrogen, which you can make yourself, but it is a total pain to transport. Lab finales, military bunkers and military outposts are your best bets to find the metallic stuff. You only need to get lucky twice, so depending on how many of them you have scouted it could be fast or take forever. Yes, it still works with martial arts.

Maybe the cyborg stuff is different in BN, but the hardest part of saving the guys in DDA seems to be convincing them to join you the moment the personality override is out, so you could immediately start removing all the other bad junk they have in them.
I'm guessing social skill isn't something most people invest in, I get somewhere between 0-15% chance of persuading them with social 3. You get the first dialogue that has low odds, then you can immediately ask again for slightly higher odds, and then it's on a cooldown which may as well be a death sentence for them. Intimidation seems to be more probable, as you can wield a big gun during dialogue and get a boost to your intimidation that way, but then they either attack you or join you with high fear and anger, and low trust. I know trust and value go up over time, but I don't know if fear and anger ever normalize.

NTA and I'm not sure if BN is different from DDA in this, but in DDA you can find all the factions easy through the refugee center.
Find any evac shelter with a working computer, which is most of them, and they're everywhere. One of the options on the computer is "contact us", which marks the refugee center on your map. The refugee center doctor sends you into several labs after the first zombie blood analysis mission that sends you to a hospital. I'm not sure if the labs are random, he sent me to a research center, then a TCL, then an ice lab? I don't remember. I think I found the finale you asked about in a central lab though, which I found by accident outside any missions. But those are xbox hueg and have many finales. It's the one with the computer in the center that you can apparently throw a mininuke into, right?
For other factions from the center, the teamster in the back can randomly send you to the hub, exodii, isherwood and the bullet bank/blacksmith duo once a week.
The representative has a mission to investigate both the hub and exodii I think.
That aside, exodii have a mission to investigate the hub.
Also you can find the exodii yourself if you find one of their lost warehouses with a sign you can examine outside. Their robots aren't hostile despite appearing scary if you haven't dealt with them before.
>>
>>563529856
Check out the refugee center and talk to the doctor. You can get directions to the refugee center from any of the starting shelter's computers.
>>563535783
Yeah. I don't think we have a teamster, just Doctor and the Old Guard. The civilians in the back are okay but they don't have anything interesting to offer aside from pocket change, which you don't need.
>>
>>563535392I am like 1000 map units away from that at this point
>>563535783
I've done that already but I can't find it
It might be time to just pack this run in I feel, I'm practically unkillable, up to my eyeballs in CBMs and survival is a non issue
>>
>>
>>563524885
That's the brute force method. There are much better ways with almost no requirements and all the upsides.
But if i say here, someone will snitch to the devs' noncecord and it'll be patched next day, ruining many strategies.
Because they are too busy whacking the fun instead of developing the game.
Best i can do is a tip: Where do you think bullets go when they die?
>>
>>
>>563545221
These bullets are still alive. I'm talking about ones that are neither in the casing nor on the ground. All but gone, or about to be. That's the most interesting part.
You see, numbers. Types. These can be sometimes offset.
Or maybe, there are always actions ready to stop the springing into action.

Felid is a generally terrible race that gets extra lives to reduce RNG, but if you're not already good enough to win with a terrible race then the extra lives don't help. Just play good races like Minotaur, Gnoll, Gargoyle, Draconian, and Troll and take your time to think about what you're doing instead of tabbing through like a moron. Identify your scrolls early and use your resources early in fights instead of trying to hoard them. Only be greedy with haste potions and blinking scrolls because those are the only things you might run out of on the orb run.

I'm trying to pin down the current state of the mutation system in DDA, as it apparently drastically changed over time making old information useless.
Can you overwrite starting traits using mutations? Say I have an NPC with fragile. Can I purify that? The info on the Hitchhiker's guide for the trait says "purifiable: yes". Yet at the same time, it doesn't say that the trait is canceled by "Human Capabilities" like say glass jaw is. I thought what purifier does is basically mutate you towards the "human _" traits without actually giving them to you as they're dummy traits, essentially working by cancelling all the traits they cancel out.
Some mutations are also not part of a line. For example, "tough". Does that mean that I can't gain this mutation by consuming "[line] mutagen" chemicals, which I assume is a dosed mix of a mutagen and primer so you don't need to drink them separately? So I can only get those traits by consuming generic mutagen or by getting attacked by special monster attacks that mutate you?
And I wanna experiment with the elf-a line. I know it's not powerful. Old posts mention that it makes you radioactive, I assume by giving you a trait named exactly that. I read in some recent pr that radioactivity traits were removed from mutation lines. So there's no danger of becoming radioactive if you only use the "_ mutagen" chemicals, right?
