Why do you think the entire fiasco with Morb resetting reality happened? From some reports, they were feeling depressed at the end of GV2 TEN YEARS AGO. Staff hated GV2's ending, and some of the interviews from afterward were basically like "yeah, we killed all of our most exciting character concepts in the first two games" or "we don't know where to take the plot next."

You can see it in iX and GV3, where they really didn't have characters who were as dynamic or had anywhere near as much backstory material as the ones from the first two games. Many of the characters from the first two games had a history that explained their eccentricities. Just look at Gibril's backstory, where she evolved from an innocent prepschool girl with a doting mother and abusive father to a bloodthirsty terroristic orphan (who still has a soft side she bottled up). The abuse she suffered under her father is why she fell for Gunvolt after he hurt her, which is all sorts of fucked up fascinating you don't get from other games.

If Caymen or BB were GV1/2 characters, they would have a life story about how they grew up, the problems they faced, and how it shaped who they became. Instead, they're static; treated like they always were as they presently are. For these reasons, even an unpopular character from GV1/2, like Stratos, had a more compelling story than the most popular iX character, Isola.

The only two things that will stick are the pendant/whatever Xiao's cooking, and GV's character development. And on the character development front, it might be subtle, because GV might not have all the memories from GV3. The issue was that they didn't really do much with them. The world building and characters in the side story stuff really do feel wasted. I get that some people like it as it adds a sense of tragedy. Seeing a likable character that you've grown to know over the course of several short stories be mercilessly eliminated in under a minute, their corpse spat upon by the protagonist, and for it to kind of be deserved, is uniquely Gunvolt.

The better route probably would have been to just have a clean break. Do a spinoff reboot with all of them alive, rather than trying to ducktape a reboot into the continuity.

It's okay, and she has a cute personality and she's hot, but farm girl turned overworked idol and propagandist is not as engaging as the GV1/2 cast. Lullaby would work in a side piece about one of the girls, not in the game proper. Mytyl is the most cat-like, and I could imagine Shinobu singing it to her.

I think Joule is the most likely candidate, though. The echoing, haunting sounds heard in the background, especially clearly at the start, musical bridge, and end of the piece are reminiscent of a scientific lab. The beginning of the piece in particular sounds like the powering up of a some equipment.

Zonda is a huge stretch because she's more associated with rabbits, but you could get some feels if it's the only thing she remembers about her mom, and the dreams and parade/circus stuff could refer to Eden.

People doompost about INTI, but I think iX and GV3 are very strong gameplay wise. Not perfect. GV3 has readability issues, mostly with the kudos bar blocking shit, but it was great fun overall. Story was questionable, but I did think it was pretty funny that GV killing all the sympathetic characters from prior games basically locked in the bad end for him. He's going to have to do a new run from the beginning to get the true end. It feels very "Gunvolty." Majogami is severely underrated, mostly because the artstyle is so out there, and it does feel like an inferior GV3 in many respects. Not a huge fan of deck building/rogue-likes, but I liked Card-En-Ciel enough. iX2 was the only meh game, and that's about it. I'm looking forward to the Gunvolt sequel.

GV3's plot was bad, it dropped a lot of the themes of the older games, and went for a generic save the world plot over the much more complex Sumeragi and Eden conflicts, but I'm less pissed at it because I understand now that it's just setup. I'm even less pissed at the generic save the world plot because that's just part of the setup; the world is still fucked in the next game unless GV can prevent the bad future. Still not going to forgive it, and Kirin is still a bad character who never really comes together.

I hope we jump right back into the grim dark stuff next game. I've said before, but GV being a merciful good boy who rejects the grimderp and encourages the other adepts to be good is a compelling idea. A light shines brighter in the dark and all.

But INTI said a few years ago that they wanted Gunvolt to be the lighthearted shonen setting while iX gets to be the dark one, so we will see.

Kirin is the thing which disappointed me the most about GV3 and is synonymous with nearly every writing issue the game has. Compared to GV and Copen, you never really get a sense of who Kirin is at her core. You’re vaguely told what her ideals are, but never why Kirin herself believes in any of it. She comes off less as a person and more like a loose collection of character traits strung together by the whims of the narrative. As a result, she lacks meaningful friction with anyone in the story, turning what was once a story predicated on interesting, character-testing conflicts into one-note good vs. evil fodder with no personality or flair of its own.

Making this all the worse is the overall lack of care put into following up on the stories of the first two games. GV1/2 revolved around heavy topics such as xenophobia and prejudice, which played part in shaping the battles between regular humans and the Adepts. Nearly every major conflict in those games helped to explore these themes, and by the end of the second game, it was implied that the bloodshed would only get worse. GV3 does not make any attempt to meaningfully follow this up. If a plot thread isn’t unceremoniously resolved offscreen, then it’s forgotten about entirely. The few times the past is brought up, the story is scant on details, and it never feels like the emotional core is moved due to a lack of reaction from the characters.

All of this is to say that GV3’s narrative is unsatisfactory on almost every level. As a follow-up to the first two games, it almost feels like it has no interest in expanding the plots established in them. When taken as its own story, it leaves a lot to be desired due to Kirin’s lack of character and being an ultimately generic doomsday plot. By the end credits, I was left detached and uninvested in where the story went and where it may be headed in the future. The stories of this series have never been perfect, but Gv3 was the first time it outright bored me.

Characters in GV3 are shit compared to GV1/2, but they're good by the standards of the genre. It's just the GV1/2 characters are ridiculous. Like the GV3 cast is still far better than the iX cast.

I'm going to be contrarian on Kirin here. She gets overly shit on. Kirin does have character, but it's subtle. Her lack of life, sense of self, and adherence to authority are her major flaws. The first two are brought up a few times in optional conversations. For instance, Lumen and Apollo asking about background interests has her saying that she had no time for hobbies. Another convo with Shiron and GV had her admit in a roundabout way that she had no friends growing up and was always doing a job and following orders.

Sure, she jokes around with GV, but she doesn't have anything outside of duty and obedience; being a battle maiden is it. Before she met Gunvolt and the Dragon Saviors, she didn't have any friends, she was an empty person. It's kind of sad, which might be one of the reasons she dodges questions about her past by switching subjects.

And she was wrong in the DLC. It's what prevents ZED from going to her for help, and it's why you spend the DLC fighting her guys.

SY probably either approves or does not care about 99% of what Sumeragi does. The idea behind glaives to begin with is as a tool to oppress and control adepts. Except for gross misconduct, which their soothsayers would tell her about, they stay out of it. It might even be that SY is giving Kirin the go ahead to join up with Sumeragi as it puts her in the best position to do whatever. Or maybe one miko isn't going to really do that much against an entire nation. The way Kirin describes the SY compound, it sounds like a ghost town.

Not bad, but a very mediocre package overall.

There were parts I really liked, such as GV confronting his actions from the prior games. It really humanized him and had some of his best character development. GV3 also stopped dancing around just how fucked up killing some of the characters in the older games was. GV1 and 2 played this "maybe badass, maybe shitass" game with gibbing anime middle and high schoolers. GV3 lands solidly on "it's terrible, and you should feel bad."

ATEMS were weird, because they were the best protagonist group, but as antagonist, they were very mixed. ZED's definitely the smartest and most successful villain, but his ideals boil down to "Everything would be great if I ruled the world because I'm the best" like the Gilgamesh clone he is. He doesn't have the personal connections to Gunvolt that Nova has, or the weirdness, charm, and tragedy of Zonda.

Character interactions were solid. Kirin and ZED are much better conversationalists than Gunvolt and Copen, and they can really play off of the other zany characters. The entire cast felt like active participants too, which was a great improvement. Even more so that we got non-MC character interactions. In the past games, dialogue were limited to Copen or Gunvolt's perspective, which limited a lot of these quirky characters as Cope and GV were basically wooden planks who wanted to kill them.

Everything else was a step-down.

At least GV3 has me hyped for whatever they have planned for GV4, and maybe that's the only reason for GV3's existence: to set up GV4. No other Gunvolt game has sign posted its sequel as hard as GV3. I think GV4 is the game that INTI wants to do. GV3 is just the game that's meant to get us from GV2 to GV4.

Isn't Shadow Yakumo supposedly sidelined because the average battle priestess is outgunned compared to what Sumeragi has? Kirin is probably the top of the top they've ever produced.

People doompost because of countless inti's failures. GV3 made the story of previous games totally irrelevant. iX2 nerfed the gameplay and have a typical "Videogame: the game" story. Umbraclaw is just bad. Flamefrit is still a joke. Servants of the Dark is a rushed mess. Majogami is literally a worse version of GV3.

Personally, I have high hopes for Kingdom's Return, but knowing Inti, they could screw things up in the most unpredictable way.
