2D restricts gameplay and limits animation potential, especially if you'd want to feature hundreds of different species.
The real solution should be a tasteful, cel-shaded artstyle that somewhat simulates 2D. Not the current cheap plastic-y look.

You say this as if the 3D models are well animated at the moment when they're hyper static. I think 5th gen sprites were way over animated, but Game Freak have shown time and time again that their 3D animation is dog shit

Once again, only if it's like the DQ 1-3 remakes, MAYBE dipping slightly into the LIVE-A-LIVE remake/Adventures of Elliot. Anything else would be too drab/baseless for a Pokémon game, particularly gens 2-5 which thrived on their vibrant colour palletes.
If it ended up like Octopath Traveler/2 or Triangle Strategy, then yeah, don't even bother, that's fucking disgusting.

Maybe it distorts the pixel's colors which already were chosen for the illusion of lighting. For example the black hair is lighter on top but darker on the bottom to give the illusion of light shining down. But the new light breaks the illusion since the dark parts are still dark even under intense lighting.

I would've been fine with them investing in HD sprites and simply reusing them over the next several generations. Disgaea did it, but maybe a bad example since even they ended up eating the 3D pill eventually for some reason

HD2D is fine if you build the game from scratch like Octopath or the game you are remaking is from the NES or early SNES era but anything after that is just sorta pushing rocks up hill. Symphony of the Night pretty much perfected the standard sprite work within archaic confines.

Nintendo would not allow them to keep pushing spriteshit, when the whole point of the 3DS was Nintendo bringing 3D gameplay to handhelds.
Game Freak saw the writing on the wall, only confirmed when Nintendo told them what NX was going to be and aim to do (switch between tv and portable gameplay, which sounded like a snappy branding name for the system...), so that's why they moved to 3D. That they had a publisher keen to continue to have their game series on its hardware meant they also had the willing financiers for the company's exploration of 3D development, something studios with similar staffing levels did not have guaranteed.

I don't like unicorn overlord but I'm like 99% sure some of the people in this thread saying that looks shit would be praising it as a return to form if the next pokemon game did it near 1-1. At least half this board is made up of tribal brand loyalists.
