It felt less like a movie and more like a two parter episode.
>>
>>59176998
Do you watch literally anything except Pokemon

NTA, but 2002 was a pretty dire place for animated movies.

What's with Ashnime movies and European towns when they're still in the Japanese regions? It's not just this movie that did it iirc
>>
>>59177042
Because foreign places to Japanese people are cool and full of mystique and ripe for adventure or some bullshit like that.
>>
>boy meets cute and mysterious girl
>teasing hints of romance left unresolved to fuel speculation
Yup, certified childhood classic.
>>
>>59177051
Ash is too autistic to fuck a Latias.
>>
>>59177042
Yeah all Gen 4 movies were all inspired by Europe. I thought these were best group of movies for that reason
>>
>>59177041
>First Ice Age
>Lilo & Stitch

Lots of flops like Powerpuff Girls, Treasure Planet, the Nickelodeon movies sure but Heroes wasn't going to make a mark either with those two releases
>>
>>59177042
It's just a fun marketing gimmick they came up with. Every movie from 5 to 18 was inspired by a real world place and the staff usually traveled to the place itself to do research.

>>59176998
I love Latias so much...

>First Ice Age
It's been years since I've seen it, so I honestly don't know if it was any good.

>Lilo&Stich
... Fair enough.

First Ice Age is a genuinely pretty good kid's movie. The sequel is when things immediately take a turn for the worse but they were movies Blue Sky pumped out solely to make money until it stopped working. Without Pokemon context it's easier to watch any of the other movies vs. Ash's 5th adventure with brand new Hoenn Pokemon

I think a main issue the Pokemon movies ran into after the third was that they feel like they really needed much more anime context to understand what was going on while you could probably at least rawdog First movie and 2000. All 3 of the first Shudo movies had enough self-contained character arcs to be easier to follow, and they tried to replicate that, but the movies generally just did not hold up the quality after Johto. The loss of Shudo is very noticeable and while they have their merit as anime ads, they mostly become curiosities. Especially due to how frequent legendary spam got in later games

What else is there to watch?

Gundam, Akira

Movie 5 sort of works fine as a standalone. Ash's friends are entirely irrelevant to the whole thing and the only Pokemon Ash even uses the whole movie are Pikachu and Tododile. Replace Ash with an OC and the movie would function just as well as it already does and it'd probably strengthen the final part of the movie. It'd leave an ambiguity that sort of can't exist with Ash knowing he'd never return to Alto Mare.
I also want to bring up that Latias and Latios aren't exactly "Hoenn" mons with this movie as this is legitimately their introduction to the series so that actually makes it even easier to handle.

>>59176998
Because it fucking sucked, simple as.
>>
>>59176998
As a kid I never realized how hot the movie villains were. Specially the blond one
>>
>>59176998
Mewtwo Strikes Back is the only "good" pokemon movie. All of the others are significantly worse.
Heroes is only good if you want to have sex with Latias (I want to have sex with Latias)

The direction, the colors, the soundtrack, it makes you want to go to Venice, it makes you feel like you're fucking there. It's a small masterpiece in the beauty of the setting and the animation. Narratively it's a little fairy tale, nothing special, but like other kids' movies such as Doraemon, it treats death and sacrifice in a non sugarcoated way (unlike PMD which always makes everyone come back in the end)

For me it's Secret Garden, i love the song and the setting

i wish more people made 3d dioramas of some of the locations or even spots where climactic fights take place
i wanna build arenas based off of them for the next /vp/ixelmon

Based if so

>>59178447
I wouldn't be so sure about that but it's weird that anon focuses on how those movies did financially on release.
>>
>>59177595
>was inspired by a real world place and the staff usually traveled to the place itself to do research
The game devs do the same. It's really just a way to visit those places and have the company pay for the trip. Verification is not required.
>>
>>59178270
>until it stopped working
It never stopped working. It was Disney executives who killed the company.
>>
>>59178270
>you could probably at least rawdog First movie and 2000
They both got terrible reviews by western critics that had no idea what was going on in them.

That's what I mean about movies replicating the "stand-alone character arc" from 3. Heroes is technically a Johto movie, just one promoting Gen III. There's too little to really call it a Hoenn movie when Misty is still here

>>59178447
It's on-par with Shudo's stuff, I'm not enough of a Musker/Clements fan to really go up to bat for Treasure Planet as one of Disney's masterpieces. Honestly the fact that Lilo and Stitch came out the same year tells me why Disney wanted it to fail. Putting out what might be one of the best and most interesting movies you've ever done and then throwing your best creators' passion project under the bus the same year is almost as spiteful as what TPC has done to some Pokemon projects in the past

>>59178894
Mostly in response to the "Animation was doing badly in 2002" comment. Honestly I would rank most of the movies I listed above Pokemon Heroes without issue, quality wise

>>59178934
A and B. Their movies had been doing worse and worse in general long before getting bought out because Blue Sky had the same issue as Dreamworks times 10. They would have a hit, then a massive flop that would force them to make another Ice Age

>>59179747
That's why I said probably. To be fair lots of corporate movies that make a fucking million dollars like the Super Mario Slop do terribly with critics who aren't willing to put effort into trying to actually understand the movies they're reviewing, that's not to defend the Mario movies though. In Mewtwo Strikes Back's case, it's 100% the fault of them cutting Mewtwo's backstory and the dub changing tons of character motivation to make less sense but to be more "morally" correct. Meanwhile I'm sure even kids struggled to follow 2000's plot at times, it feels like something that could only exist in the early wild west Pokemon world setting before Masuda established more proper lore with RS
