>visual novels
You do realize op is talking about visual designs. not level design?
Also how is this lazy from any kind of design standpoint?

No matter what people say I’ll always find recolored characters soulful: Sub-Zero / Scorpion, Mario & Luigi, Toads, Power Rangers etc… I think characters that are presented as different but in reality all play the same like Ryu, Ken and Akuma are way worse.

I think the bigger issue is that developers don’t try to be creative with this genre, and honestly that’s an issue I have with most shooters. Why make something like Fantasy Zone when you can make generic military or space shooter #9999?

Not really laziness, more like memory limitations. They didn't have the space to cram that many different sprites, so recolored characters were their best choice. Otherwise they'd ended in a situation like Vampire Savior / Vampire Savior 2 / Vampire Hunter 2, where they had to make separate games with different characters to accomodate them all.

batman forever kind of looks lazy from a modern perspective so it came to mind. but it's actually an awesome game for it's art style, really captured the batman forever vibe.

I prefer palette swaps though. It's like the TMNT.

2/3 of the ninja sprites are shared.
Pic shows how many frames are unique to Scorpion.

The answer is the same for both. Most shmup fans don't like Fantasy Zone because it's more Defender than Gradius and they want Gradius XXZeroAlpha Extreme. Fighter players don't want games inspired by Budokan or Bushido Blade because they're not Street Fighter variants. Even Mortal Kombat is too much of a deviation for most of them.

The most interesting thing about the 16-bit Batman Forever games is that they are built from Probe's Mortal Kombat engine. Which was used in Mortal Kombat 1, 2 for the Genesis/ MD, as well as the 32x and Sega CD ports. The game is a hybrid Euro-platformer (mazeformer) with a Mortal Kombat derivative fighting engine. Probe was replaced by Sculptured Software for the Genesis/ MD MK3 port and MK3U. Probe did go through all of the trouble of using actors in costumes for digitized sprites. Though I think the Batman and Robin sprites were CG? Or CG over-top of live action actors. It was ambitious, but I never liked it.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero was Midway making their own version of Batman Forever. Mortal Kombat Mythologies uses a derivative of the Mortal Kombat 3 engine. But is also a platformer/ beat em up. Also uses a mix of digitized sprites but with polygon backgrounds.
