I like it but I wish it weren't so easy. It didn't need to be masochistic like 2 but I think they over-corrected and it definitely ended up with a bit of a "was that it?" feeling to a lot of its sections. Even 1 felt harder.

I got into the series late and played all three games for the first time back to back, and Jak 3 ended up being the first "long" game I ever beat in a single sitting. Maybe coming straight off of 2 over-prepared me but it was a shock compared to the weeks long sisyphean ordeal 2 was.

I wanted so bad to get into this series after missing out on it at the time (just so many games to play back then when retro and current gaming was at a peak) but I tried starting the first one and ehhh I just was bored w it. Felt like there were a ton of other games that were doing what it was trying to do just better at the time. Does the first one get better as it goes on as in, do you get power ups because all I can remember now is it feeling sluggish and maybe you get gear or upgrades that make it a lot more engaging?

The only upgrades you get in the first game are temporary stuff with the eco charge pods scattered around the levels (like faster speed, projectiles and stronger attacks), Jak 2 and 3 have moveset upgrades but those are far different games than Precursor Legacy.
>feel like there were games doing what its trying to do better at the time
Really? I can't count that many 6th gen era platformers with the same ideology as N64/PS1 collectathons like Jak 1, much less with a seamless open-world.
>all i can remember is it felt sluggish
I honestly think Jak is second to 64 Mario in terms of movement and controls, even in 2 and 3 he feels really good to control and move around.

>First game is called “Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy”
>Second game is called “Jak II” (Daxter dropped from title despite still being prominently featured. No subtitle.)
>Third game is called “Jak 3” (Roman numeral dropped)
Why such fluctuation with titling?

First game was simply the best in making a simple 3d platformer. Best levels, the game looked great and was decently paced.
Second game was GTA/TONY HAWK/RATCHET/MORE POPULAR THINGS mashed together. But neither of those elements were represented well in any form.
What was the point in having a GTA like world where most missions take place in a different level entirely?
What was the point in having the hoverboard when it is only represented in two levels?
What was the point of the shooter focused gameplay when the aiming is obviously not designed around it?
Jak 3 is just jak 2 with a boring desert instead of the city and the game is now much more easier due to broken weapon upgrades.
Daxter comes close second. But even that game had big problems. Spray upgrades made the previous one obsolete, levels became less focused past the mid game, the open world was useless,etc.. But it was still better than 2 and 3.

I would argue that Jak 3's desert portions made it a little less monotonous than Jak II, and the easier difficulty made it less painful to finish.
I'm this guy >>12505578 by the way.

My issue with Jak II outside the checkpoints is that Haven City is very annoying to travel, the peds do nothing, krimzon guards are boring to fight and the vehicles aren't fun to drive (they feel slow, handle poorly and are very fragile), some of the worst missions in the game imo were the ones inside the city.

The hoverboard is actually very fun to use, I found myself using it more than the cars and bikes, the skate park mission was fun too.
The gunplay is also fun desu, doing the punch+shoot with the blaster, killing a bunch of small enemies with one scattergun shot or stunlocking with the vulcan was very satisfying.

OpenGOAL is the real deal. I've played through both 1 and 2 several times on my Steam Deck with perfect 16:10 60fps and never encountered a single issue. Looking forward to trying 3 soon. I appreciate that you can still play at the PS2 resolution and aspect ratio if you want too. The PS3 ports were okay for their day but there's zero reason to go back now.

Jak 1 is so comfy, it's a real shame about 2-3. I don't blame them, they had to do what they had to do to stay relevant and not become another forgotten old platformer studio.
They aren't even bad games, the shooting and platforming are kinda fun. I just don't really like the mission structure, it makes half of the missions take place in the same 3 environments until you get to the part of that map that splits off. Combat difficulty really just came down to how awkward it was to shoot with no lock on, it's why 3 is so much easier with that one yellow gun that just shoots everything for you.

I'm playing through 1 right now and have some thoughts about level design. I'm not amazing at video games but when I replay jak and try to 100%, I find it easy to breakdown the objectives and complete levels. usually levels start off slow with only a couple eazy objectives, but then by the end your actions compound into multiple power cell grabs back to back. It's a rewarding style of 3d collectathon design. However I find my ability to make this happen crumbles at the 3rd hub area. Spider cave and Snowy Mountain feel like a steep difficulty jump. The powercells feel a lot more seperated from each other, and the effort it takes to get 1 cell is really high. I understand they were making objectives more difficult for the endgame, but the levels in the 3rd hub are a lot less satisfying to complete when It takes so much more work.
