Fond this for a dollar, just not completely sure if its legit since ive never seen a PS One controller on any other color than the basic gray. This model is the one that came with the small last revision of the console.

Any idea on how to be sure its legit? something particular i need to look for? either on the outside or on the PCB itself?

There's a possibility it is the Island Blue version of a PSone Dualshock. It has the gray buttons which the later PSone designs had. As for its legitimacy, I think you have to open it up to identify the chips and boards consistent with the ones that OEM Sony controllers had.

I bought a GBA SP for $20 from a sketchy guy in a van that looked like he lived in it, it smelled like a ball sack so bad I sanitized it and put it in a container of baking soda for nearly a week and I still couldn't get the smell off of it. I ended up flipping it and turning a profit which I was okay with but would have really preferred to just play with it, it's just that I was so grossed out by it I couldn't bring myself to touch it. Also one time I was going to buy a 2DS XL off some guy for $100 he needed money fast for rent and it was a good deal, but I looked through his profile real quick and discovered he was trans and kinda a slob so I just ghosted and blocked because I don't want to have that thought in my head. Buying secondhand is definitely an adventure.

This is why I take apart everything I buy and disinfect and scrub every square millimeter with soap, hot water, isopropyl alcohol and in some cases soak everything in white vinegar since it helps to get rid of the stank. Some people are so disgusting it's absolutely mind boggling, but it's actually pretty rare to come across an item that can't be restored to pristine condition if you're willing to go through the trouble. I had to stop buying anything from black people though since they almost always have roaches inside.

I ask them to show me a video of it running so we don't have to test it when I get there. I use the video to judge their general cleanliness inside their house to set my expectations on what I'm getting.

Yeah those are the PS1 controllers you'd see if you went to the store circa 2001-2004. I had a few of them.
They were a continuation of pic related from before the PSOne came out.
The black PlayStation controller in the picture almost looks like a PS2 controller from a distance but it has a gray plug to match the color of the PS1 and obviously no Dualshock 2 label

Chinks do a terrible job with knockoff controllers so I can tell that's real just by looking at the fit and finish, and buttons. You might have a hard time finding replacement analog rubbers that match. I've never seen any color but black on AliExpress for ds1/2.

Had to tell, but the PSone controllers did have the light grey opposed to the darker grey used for the original and PS2 controllers. Again, the only way to tell is to open them up to determine if OEM or a really good reproduction. Lately Hyperkin, PowerA, 8bitdo, and other Chinese manufacturers have made controllers very close to OEM that it is hard to tell.

I too am not used to controller prices so high these days. They used to be inexpensive enough for a whole group of friends to choose a color as their weapon of destruction amongst the group.
