What was your reaction the first time you heard of, and then played, Metroid Prime?

I got the Gamecube on Christmas years after it came out, with a stack of games. Metroid Prime was a relatively unassuming game, the only Metroid I played before it was Return of Samus, and it was pretty miserable. The jump in graphics from that were insane first off, and it struck me as the next logical step from Ocarina of Time. I quite enjoyed the game and it essentially got me into the series earnest.

>Japanese game given to American developers
>Yet another FPS, how original
My reaction was that this would probably be completely shit but I'd give it a chance. There were various marketing spins that helped warm me to the game before it came out. For example, Nintendo said it wasn't a FPS, it was a FPA (a brand new genre), and also that Miyamoto had a relatively high level of involvement, as well as a few other NCL staff (such as the composer). Miyamoto added scanning and in the pre-release hype that made it seem like it was something more than a generic shoot'em up. Well, scanning turned out to be shit (one time, missable scans, what the hell?) What I liked most about the game was the art design.

>Huh Metroid game, okay, rent
>Holy shit this is awesome
>*lands on Tallon IV*
>*spends 15 mins in the first room just seeing the different effects stuff has on my visor, like the water, the rain drops, firing my cannon at different stuff*
>Okay this is amazing, graphics will never get better than this

Excitement because I actually started with Echos, then a lot of tension headaches as I kept going back and forth between magmoor again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
Beat it, but it was not as good as echoes, and bored me to death at times. 8.2/10

I was not excited about it being fps despite being a huge metroid fan. I remember looking at the ads in the back of egm with future and prospective games listed with prices. I was tracking Metroid back there since it was listed as Metroid 64. I always imagined a 3rd person game somewhere between oot and castlevania 64.
Was pumped when it released, it was great

>this okay, controls really poorly like an n64 game instead of like halo
>these enemies sure are damage sponges
>scanning is very boring.
>oh they expect me to go all the way back?
>oh they expect me to go all the way back, again?
>oh they expect me to go all the way back, again again?
>progress feels really slow for no reason.
>these areas aren't very interesting.
>okay, snow area.
>oh hey I found a way back to the first area
>oh I forgot something in the snow area
>oh I have to go through magma caverns again to get back.
>this game is taking really long.
>dropped it for over a decade
>well the internet says its one of the greatest games ever made I'll just play through it again
>huh the back tracking is still pretty obnoxious
>alright got back to where I remember being last, pretty smoothly.
>these mine areas are kinda ugly
>okay, shame there hasn't been a single good boss so far
>basically at the end game now
>return to the area near the ship
>get told to go back and find 14 artifacts
>there goes my motivation to beat the game
>tell the internet it's kinda crap and it's way over-praised
>people tell me I'm supposed to just know about the artifacts before ever playing the game
>everyone insists it's not that bad if you just know about the artifacts and get them at odd points here and there throughout the game when you finally can
Look, not every game is for everyone but you're out of your mind if you think this is what a 9/10 is like, let alone an 8 or even a mid-7/10 game. I love replaying fun games, but this is not a game built for replays.

>got Metroid Prime very close to release
>massive blizzard proceeds to sweep through my area, plunging the whole state and surrounding states into a month-long state of emergency
>played the living hell out of Metroid Prime all the while
Frankly, it was fantastic. I don't think I could have asked for better conditions to play it at that point in my life.

Really disengaged and confused, because it was my first experience with any game like this.
Only after I spent some time getting acclimated to how the 2D games work did I really appreciate this game but it was a total 180 after that.

This game was AWESOME. The first time you go into the snow level the atmosphere was unlike anything else. Switching to the ball mode had all of the tactical satisfaction as in the 2D games. Metroid Prime was a masterpiece.

it was great when I played it on release. Upon replaying it a few years ago I didnt like it as much due to the absolutely insane amounts of backtracking. Its fine in a 2d metroid when getting around is quick and easy but really annoying in a cavernous 3d game where I have to constantly check my map to make sure Im even going in the right direction. besides that complaint it does everything else great really, the atmosphere especially is top notch
