What is a critically panned game that you somehow like playing?
Hellnight got mostly mid-to-horrible scores by reviewers, and it undeniably has a barren and low-budget feeling for most of the experience. Still you can tell the devs and artists were genuinely inspired, it's an actually creepy and scary horror game with very effective art, music and writing.

I knew this was just a giant fucking advertisement as a teen, but still liked it
there aren't many shooting games that actually focus on competitive shooting
it could have been a decent light gun game, but it lacks GunCon compatibility

Only thing that bothers me is stage 6 music, which sounds like technofarts with a coughing latino overdosed on cough syrup
Overall, the game's shit and it sucks. But i like it anyways.

I'm 99% sure there was a campaign to bomb this game to oblivion. There's no way a bunch of people looked at it thought: yeah, this sucks ass.
Vidya journos were a bit iffy, but their track record wasn't that bad until 2005~2010

I was really into Hellnight until the monster (across the map from me) decided that he had the option of attacking me (from ACROSS THE MAP) which triggered a cutscene that instakilled Naomi.
Cutscene ends and I just sat there stunned wondering how the fuck that was even possible as a glitch. I decided to not risk playing it again rather than redo like 2 hours of gameplay.

I know this game's been memed to hell, but I got the cartridge from Babbages over 20 years ago when lots of SNES games cost single digits and I've always liked it. First stage always looked real cool to me and the soundtrack is nice (especially stage 2's theme.)

Pic related is easily in my top 20 favorite games. Gamespot gave it a 1.9/10 saying:
>either the most avant-garde piece of gaming artistry to ever find its way to the retail market, or the absolute worst game of the year.
Roger Ebert said almost the exact same thing about Freddy Got Fingered.
