Bro, nobody would ever tell you back when these games were new that beating the game with the passwords you wrote down wasn't really beating the game.

If they game gives you passwords, you're free to use them without guilt. If you want to challenge yourself to beat a game without continuing at all, you can, but it's a challenge beyond just beating it normally. It's different for most arcade games, where credit feeding completely trivializes most of them.

If you got to the end credits of a game using your skills, patience, and tools provided by the game, while not spamming quarters if it's an arcade cab, or having a guide open on a monitor the whole way through, you beat the game. Anyone else that says you have to have played 1000+ hours of the same game and can blitz through it in 30 seconds while eating a pizza and jacking off simultaneously is a queer and must have their opinion discarded.
