American cultural hegemony has made English seem hip and cool with kids, so they pepper their speech with English slang they picked up from American movies and TV and music. Speaking your own language is seen as "old-fashioned".
it's the same with fashion, hobbies, food and even culture. modern European cultures have degraded into theme park parodies of themselves because youths no longer have a real connection to it; in their day to day lives they are functionally American and only put on the image of being 'German' or 'French' maybe twice a week as a joke.

I don't understand how alcoholics say it "takes away the pain".
>>
>>12614345
if you drink enough you pass out
>>
>>12614345
alcohol nulls pain both figuratively and literally (while you're drunk)
physical pain is numbed to the point where you know it's there, but it's no longer painful. it's hard to explain unless you've just had something to drink while in a lot of physical pain. one time i remember having an incredible toothache, the kind that makes you cry, and as a temporary measure i had something to drink, and i said to my friend; "it still hurts... but i don't care".
i'm not sure i can describe it better than my drunken self, it doesn't actually fix anything, but it can absolutely give you temporary relief from it.
>>
>>12614465
>"it still hurts... but i don't care"
and to be more clear, the pain didn't actually go away, i could still tell my tooth was making it out like i was going to die, but alcohol just gives you this strong feeling of "whatever", like nothing matters, the normal screaming intensity of pain is replaced with an idea of pain. it didn't go anywhere, but you can ignore it, like it's not quite real.

"liquid courage" as some people call it. it applies to more than just social situations
>>
>>12613134
I guess it is referring to the dark saints (or black saints) who stole the armor. But due to lack of writing space, they just wrote "blacks"

The Mickey Finn line is a solid 60 years out of date, and Cormac McCarthy fucking sucks and doesn't remotely hold up to American Classic authors like Hemingway, Nabokov, Twain, Salinger, or Faulkner.

Writers who make and follow rules and critique other writers are generally trash.

There's a weird pronouncation error in the German Freespace intro where Lt. Ash turns into what sounds like Arsch (butt).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4ghxOW75HA

Armed and Dangerous also has an Ivar Combrinck-tier mistake in the German version where the main character Roman's NAME GET'S TRANSLATED so everyone calls him Römer, as in "someone from Rome".
>>
Some of the stuff in German Diablo 2 became so infamous that magazines even printed them on their joke pages.
One type of polearm for example got translated as "Schwengel" (schlong) which got even more ridiculous with all the enhancements so you ended up with the "Tödlicher Schwengel des Stoßens" (deadly schlong of thrusting).
And then you also had the higher tier stuff like the "Latte des Grauens" (boner of horror).
>>
>>12615460
I heard there was a lot wrong with the initial fan-translation that most ESLs didn't pick up on, which may have been a contributing factor that drove the more OCD fan-translator insane.
>>
In the German version of The Phantom Menace for PS1, the voice actors pronounce several names completely wrong. They say "Kwee-gohn" to Qi Gon, "Ah-nakin" to Anakin and so on.
This really pissed me off as a kid, but nowadays I just find it funny as fuck everytime I replay that game and deliberately play the German version because the bad voice acting really fits the janky vibe of that game lol.
