I like both consoles, but if I were forced to play one random videogame, no other details given, from either the NES library or the SNES library, I would absolutely pick the SNES. Even bad SNES games tend to at least be decent looking, and/or have a decent soundtrack. There are more NES games which play poorly/are boring, and also have crappy low effort graphics and beepboop music. Just like if I were given the same choice between random 2600 and random NES, I'd favor the NES, because at least there's a much better chance of winding up with a game where things look and sound like something and feature more than 2 minutes of novel gameplay.

I was thinking about this recently and came to the conclusion, at least for me, that if I compare my top say 3-5 NES vs SNES games, NES wins, but if it's say top 10-20 NES vs SNES games, then SNES wins, but once you get past that it's back to NES winning. For me NES has the better GOATs and the better hidden gems (also the bad games are more fun as they are at least funny) but SNES has the better high tier games.

They are side scrolling games but not really platformers. At most you can say they have platforming sections. SNES has better platformers: Super Mario World 1 and 2, DKC trilogy, a better Kirby game. As far as pure platformer go the NES has the Super Mario trilogy, Kirby and uhhhh uhhhh Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers

Between failing to live up to the NES, and struggling to compete with the superior Mega Drive, the SNES was just a big disappointment. Most people who were around back then and weren't toddlers, female, or gay, felt the same.

I’ve found this to be true in the amount or rather volume of really fun games. I’m playing Taro’s Quest (Jajamaro-something in Japanese) and it’s such a cute ninja rpg with hilarious engrish.
Vice Project Doom and Bionic Commando (with the remove censorship hack) are really good too.
And that goofy space shooter Gun-Nac, the really cool martial arts but swords and sorcery game Kickmaster, and the kung fu game Phantom Fighter.
These are the games to play when you wake up on a Saturday and just want happiness.
And the Konami rpg Lagrange Point. It’s on par or better than The Phantasy Star games.

NES games were not designed to be as hard as possible, not at all. They were designed for children for fuck sakes. Anyone who knows shit about game difficulty will tell you that ninja gaiden is not hard until you get to the final level. Ninja gaiden was designed with children in mind for its difficulty. As an adult who never played the game before growing up as a child it took me a week to finish it.
Its not even the toughest nes game. You are given unlimited continues, a pretty big health bar, and proper use of subweapons makes the game expontially easier:there is a subweapon that 1 hit kills any boss, a well placed windmall shuriken can completly cut apart any formation of difficult enemies. The game relies heavily on memorization (which contrary to what you are told makes the game easier because it means once you know how to clear a certain section you can reliably do it 100% of the time: games that have elements of randomness to them are much much harder than games that can be memorized)
If you want an NES game that is really tough look at zanac or castlevania 1's second loop. If you want an SNES game that blows your head off look at the japanese version of super ghosts n ghouls which has no continue feature or play gradius 3 on its highest difficulty.
There are games much, much harder games (go into the shmup thread on this shithole of a board and ask people people there about difficulty).

Castlevania is a fair enough challenge but most of the difficulty with Ninja Gaiden is trial and error bullshit. Like you said, it doesn't require much skill just memorization and luck which makes it a lesser game in my book. When I beat Ninja Gaiden I didn't feel like I accomplished something myself, I just felt like I just went through the motions.

Yeah what that anon said is horseshit
The real reason that games were so hard back then was because the devs were applying their experience making arcade games which were extremely hard on purpose to steal quarters. The idea on your end thoigh is that you will play these extremely short but extremely hard games over and over again until you can beat them practically with your eyes closed. Nowadays everyone expects to beat a game with relative ease.
