I recommend sealed, brand new OEM replacement modules. Nintendo will send you some for free, if you call them in 2003 and ask nicely.

You would have to know of the design flaw and preemptively lube the stickbox before using it

Apparently not with all the stick drifts in current consoles.

I like the 8BitDo 64 controller. I know about the firmware issues because i researched it before buying, but i havent noticed any issues while playing, only had fun using it.

I can't play the Goemon game because of a slight analog stick drift. It is a minor problem in some platformers like running full speed forward in SM64 which feels like it isnt moving fast enough.

I would also like to know what is a good replacement. There are lots of options online and I haven't tried almost all of them.

>I like the 8BitDo 64 controller
Isn't that with the modern layout? I've heard that the 8bitdo replacement sticks for the OG controllers are pretty much as good as you can get without spending hundreds of $$$.
>>12613431
Full steel bowl, stick and gears is like $300+. Which might be justified if the thing literally never deteriorates over 1000s of hours. But hard to find much info about how it fairs over long term use so...

yes which I dont mind.
Why I like it, is because it has actual c-buttons, and blue green AB buttons.
Because mapping c-buttons to anything else just feels awkward.

This controller is my new go-to for N64 games. Sometimes it's a bit messy with detecting inputs on certain emulators, but overall it's pretty plug'n'play. I do miss the original controllers ergonomics and the two Z triggers are kind of odd, but having actual C-buttons on an N64 clone is amazing.

I map right-z to also be R, and then it feels natural.
its natural because you would never press Z with your right hand, and its more comfortable to not have to move your finger up so much to hit R

I bought the NSO controller and use a bluetooth adapter. The new stick uses potentiometers instead of optical encoder wheels, but it actually has the same range as the original. Everything else works fine too.
>>12613728
If this didn't get delayed several times I would've been using this instead. I've heard great things about it, and I know from my own experience with 8bitdo products that they're far better quality than other brands.

yeah but they explicitly said the different gates would adjust spring tension, they would have mentioned a different style joystick if that was on the horizon

Do you not like TMR?
Or do you just mean the stem and pivot you don't like?

>>12614339
It’s the stem and pivot. TMR has no impact on the way a joystick actually feels, just longevity. The pivot for an N64 joystick actually creates more tension the further from neutral you pull it, making it more accurate for small movements. Modern joystick designs lose that.

I know what you mean in some ways
But I don't think it's the physical part that's the problem
It's just accuracy got better and dead zones being way different
Either way I'm eagerly awaiting to see how it performs

I got one of the 8BitDo bluetooth mod kits for OEM controllers and it's good overall but the stick definitely doesn't feel stock. If you're not familiar with how the games are supposed to feel it's probably fine but 5 seconds in Mario 64 was enough to tell it's not a foolproof replacement.

It's purpose is as a retro style six button controller that wouldn't need a right joystick but must still be compatible with modern technical standards which expect a right joystick. It's just been de-emphasized in the design like a tranny tucking his penis.

Honestly, just use it until it becomes too much of an issue, then replace it with an OEM. Having the stick not be perfect was part of the experience, people didn't give up on them the second they weren't perfectly taut. For all the ways people want to try to emulate the experience with CRT shaders and shit, there's one that people actually lived with.
