There are tons.
>Yakuza/Like A Dragon series
>Tokyo Xanadu (+upcoming Kyoto Xanadu)
>The World Ends With You (OG + NEO)
>Blue Reflection 1/2
>Caligula Effect 1/2
>Monark
>Reynatis
>Varlet
>Eternights
>Mato Anomalies
>Dusk Diver 1/2
>Loop8: Summer of Gods
>Akiba's Trip series

I'm sure I'm still forgetting some, but these are all on Steam except for OG TWEWY which has a Switch remaster you can easily emulate.

If future counts, then SMT:V
>>
>>3942354
The point is to discuss them, its a conversation starter, retard.
>>
>>3942338
Too few, and mainly chink games
>>
>>3942338
Final Fantasy 15 is a interesting take on this since it takes place in 21st century equivalent of a fantasy world.
>>
>>3942338
I am actually on a similar search but for wrpgs and im quite sure its literally just vmtb and xenus boiling point. Gonna add smt and persona to that list but ive never played them
>>
>>3942455
SMT are post-apo stories. Its spin offs like Devil Summoners and Personas do count.

Cheeky but also kind of serious question. Would Earthbound still be considered a modern setting? Or are the halcyon days of the 80's where it's set as lost to time as any medieval era rpg?

Mother/Earthbound has too many fantasy elements, so it feels like a fantasy setting first and foremost, I would say.
>>
>>3942451
shame it sucks and has a true ending novel
>>
>>3942389
Half of these are not RPGs though

lol
>>
>>3942482
Personally I'd consider it a modern setting as there are cars and things. I don't think the fantastical elements take away from it.
>>
>>3942482
There's cars, modern infrastructure, the protagonist is clearly meant to be a normal looking kid from a modern time, etc so I'd say it counts more than it doesn't. It's really so all over the place that you could almost call the anachronism itself the setting rather than weigh which element is stronger, but I don't think any of this stuff is really mutually exclusive.

Define "modern"
>>
>>3943042
I would consider a "modern" setting to be anything reminiscent of the 1980s up to current day. It's pretty vague but I'd take anything resembling current society give or take 20 years.

>just woke up
>had a dream where Tony Hawk Pro Skater had released a skateboard attachment and you could roll around in the house and it would replicate the gameplay in game
>and it had a collab with Atlus to make a version of Persona 5 Royal where Joker’s kickflipping and zooming around the whole game on a board and the more skills you did the more ranked up with confidants or damage to shadows you did
>WOO LOOKING COOL JOKER

>wake up and realize how retarded that sounds
Anyway good morning everyone I can’t find that snail comic reaction image I wanted to post with that

I ended up picking it up because you mentioned it in the thread and I just finished it. It was a pretty solid 7/10 game. The fact that you never met Ed or Dale was kind of weird, I was expecting an after credit scene of Akito teaming up with them and taking the place of KK or something..

>SMT are post-apo stories.

Sometimes they're "mid-apocalypse" like the first part of SMT1, or Devil Survivor 1. I'd like another game like that.

>>3948836
I like this game but it's kind of "we have Okami at home"
>>

You have to stretch the definition of "modern setting", but I think you want the Trails series of games.

From a setting standpoint, a hundred years ago the world was in a vaguely FFT-style era of tech and politics. Then the "orbal revolution" happened and things modernized very quickly. There's electricity, cars, phones, guns, even computers and the internet.

The reason I bring it up is that it feels much more modern than even literal modern settings, like Persona. The reason why is that the modern stuff is weaved throughout the entire game, it's not a separate, distinct part from the fantastical.

You gain magic by slotting gems into your phone. There are sidequests about destroying monsters, but then there are ones about taking pictures for newspapers, running security on a train, locating lost tourists, testing new computers, cooking food for a restaurant, etc. etc.

And the main stories are often full of very modern ideas, like trade conferences, information blackouts, political tension between NGOs, etc.

To be clear there are also major, major fantastical and scifi elements, but at its core it's a modern setting and is easily the best one out there.
