Anything I should know before I play this? Can I do well as a basic sword and shield guy with no magic

Knights level up slower, get less HP per level and can't wear Leather (doesn't matter outside of the first hour of playtime, if at that). In exchange they're immune to paralyzation and repair weapons and armor on the fly, without a need for you to go time and again to a blacksmith and leave your gear there for a few hours and a bunch of gold for them to be repaired.

huh so arena has pre-baked classes which is cool
>Sorcerer has spell absorb but also cannot regen magicka unless he absorbs spell or drinks potion
wiki states that you can absorb your own magical abilities if they explode, just as busted as Daggerfall then?
>Burglar, 100% chance pick pockets
do you actually get anything useful or just couple of gold pieces and pocket lint?
>Assassin/Archer 60% melee/ranged crit potential
I don't suppose you can boost those numbers further somehow?

very difficult. would need to grind more until you're strong enough to take up a quest to get the best weapon.
the META is spellsword or something, grind for enough gold and stat points to custom make a spell that's low cost for the damage, then spam the spell. and the META for grinding is getting the spell for making shallow dungeons and grinding there for hours for easy XP. extremely boring so i gave up.

Ragnaraok made a video recently on the mage class and how to exploit the spell making mechanics to have magic cost nothing.
Personally, I'd go with a dark elf (highest attributes overall) sorcerer (3x int as magicka and can use weapons) and custom make a spell that does aoe so I regen my on magicka

More like an oversight. The game checks whether you have an artifact on you already or not to give you an Artifact Quest, so what you do is damage the artifact's durability by using it then leave it with a blacksmith, game sees there's no artifact in your inventory so it gives you a quest to acquire one, rinse and repeat.

Its a product of its time. I remember the first time I saw my friends dad playing it. The prison was pretty creepy, and it looked kind of fun killing goblins. I was mostly playing shooters like Doom and Heretic with my friends over a modem, it was a new type of game for me. I liked Daggerfall more, though. Bought it the day it came out.

Reminder that Ultima Underworld was made before this game and superior.
UW1 has no replay value though, unless you replay just to find all the subquests or hoard all the magic equips. basically Druid best class because Paladin had the wrong stats(Paladin had low Strength).

>Is it worth doing side quests that aren't artifact quests? Like getting quests from towns people or wandering in the wilderness and stuff like that
Are you some kind of min-maxing metagaming faggot who only cares about optimal rewards, or do you roleplay in your roleplaying games? Naturally, a noble paladin would always help wandering townsfolk or nubile-yet-chaste maidens wandering in the wilderness.

I mean from the roleplaying perspective I'm trying to save tamriel as soon as I can so that it's not being ruled by an evil wizard any longer than it has to be, and also because Ria's lifeforce is fading from existence
