There are many CRPGs based on D&D.
Why are there no CRPGs based on Traveller?

Not enough of a following to cause hype. All the ttrpgs owned by Mongoose aren't that popular.

Never heard of it. How bout Rifts

There literally is. What?

Not anymore. It used to be in the top 3.

Same reason why D&D is more popular on the tabletop, people who aren't contrarians want to play a hero in their escapist fantasy and not some guy who's just doing jobs for money and will likely die the first time he's in a fight.

The sheer irony of posting this when D&D was originally a game where you play "just some guy" was likely to die

Umm sweety let's take a minute to unpack this, this is deeply problematic. Maybe that was true back in the dark ages of when DnD was just for basement-dwelling nerds, but now DnD has a vibrant and diverse fanbase from all walks of life, and it's better for it. Diversity has always been DnD's greatest strength.
Secondly, by saying "play a hero" you're endorsing the anachronistic concept of objective morality and clearly-defined good and eivl, while the real world is far more nuanced and shades of gray. Context matters. Your rhetoric has been associated with white supremacy and hate-filled ideologies.

Approaching Infinity is pretty good, its basically a not-traveller roguelike

I would agree with the bit except contrarians.
I think the greater issue is that Traveller has become a harder sell as a setting. A lot of people don't really get it because it's so old. It's not very transhumanist and its got a lot of complexities in its lore or things not fully fleshed out. The end result is that it's perceived as weird and outdated. People can't fathom why people aren't chopping their arms off to get cyberlimbs or making genetically enhanced supersoldiers if the tech to do so is there. Others can't get over how slow the travel is, because it can take weeks to get to a given destination. This would be difficult to replicate in a CRPG because a lot of quests would likely be on time limits and devs would need to account for travel time. One of the reasons that Traveller itself hollowed out the setting for The New Era/3rd ed was because of people complaining there was too much lore to follow.
Not helping the matter is that psionics are rare and outlawed in many places. Traveller is ultimately too simulationist for much of the CRPG market.

I haven't played these since the late 90s and I can't get dosbox to work just quite right with them. Lots of UI/graphical glitches.

Haven't tried emulating them (I recall them not being very good...), but the CRPGAddict finished them both without mentioning any dosbox issues.
Have you tried any of the actively maintained forks, like DOSBox-X or DOSBox Staging?

Like the gypsy travellers?

I messed around with it more today and it turns out it was actually quite simple, I just went back to all the default settings using the normal regular unmodified dosbox. Problem solved. Boy MT1 is a pain to play, I remember why I played the second one more.

Star Ocean was Traveller for modern non-traniez audience.

Traveller games would have to be downscaled for most career paths. Goes against the grain of most space games which try to make everything hueg wide spanning sandboxes.

That ship in the foreground looks like a startled dog.
