>>3958781 I just looked at the top row and it's pretty good. I've played all the games in that row except for Jagged Alliance and Witcher 3, and the only game there that I didn't really enjoy is BG2. If I made my own top 10 RPGs list it would be pretty similar to the top row
>>3958825 Just having a bit of fun with my phrasing because they're #2 and #6 but I am legitimately asking why 2 should be better I've never seen anyone put 1 above 2 in my life

ah yes the celebrated rpg mount and blade: warband. the thrilling roleplay potential of which copy-paste village do I plunder, and which copy-paste dialogue do I select for the game's 5 different NPC types.

I expect nothing less from a site whose spiritual leader is a kissless virgin who went bald at 30 and couldn't get laid in America so he went to Asia to fuck desperate brown whores.
>>3958781 There is no final fantasy or dragon quest so this reeks of contrarianism. I don't get why people like that are so afraid of liking something even if it's popular. Its pathetic.
>>3958781 It's really hard to make a top 100 RPG list because most RPGs are bad. It's a genre with a lot of potential that very rarely reaches that potential. There's a very good reason that most of the most beloved RPGs are the ones which hybridise with other genres and therefore dodge the pitfalls of boring gameplay and mucho texto.
>>3961159 I feel like this is a huge part of why the Codex community feels so off. It consists of people who try hard to come of as elitists, but for a genre of things that's mostly more potential than it is actually great, so they're obsessed with something that largely isn't that satisfying and are looking for something that fulfills their fantasies of the amazing game that actually lets them roleplay freely and have any decision they make affect the world in truly meaningful and fully realized ways, while being frustrated that this barely happens and isn't what they really wanted when it sort of does.
So they play into this identity of elitism, but it mostly feels put on because they're generally not playing things that are truly great or challenging and you can tell they're not fulfilled by most of what they do have and are chasing some ideal that will likely never exist.
>>3958804 >dragon age: origins Dragon age is bg3 without anything good. The loot is boring, the dnd substitutes for classes and systems are boring, the fodder encounters suck, the story is typical kotor ripoff that bioware has been repeating for a decade, I can go on. >>3961200 Holy reddit. >>3958809 Bg 3 and nw2 in any list is embarrassing. >>3958952 Pissing on grimoire exposes the weak.
>>3961200 >elitism. I genuinely can't imagine how Non-elitism list would like like if that's an elitist one. It'll be skyrim on the first place, bg3 on second and that's it?..
>>3958781 >Making a thread about RPG Codex Yes, this is embarassing, anon.
Instead of focusing on this, why don't we try to solve the mystery of which RPG Codex users are just sockpuppet accounts for their mods. I'm pretty sure Roguey and Fedora Master are the same person. I haven't figured out Infinitron's secret identity yet.
>>3958781 When you post a top 100 list you have to specify the methodology used to generate the list. Is it fan voting? How do fans vote do they pick 100 games themselves? Is it based on what people think the best game is or is it their favorite game? Define the parameters before I even begin to form an opinion.
>>3962404 >the best game is or is it their favorite game? There's not a lot of difference. Unless you're some fake hipster who picks Fallout even though you don't actually like playing it.

>>3962534 >There's not a lot of difference. There is a lot of difference unless you are completely incapable of self reflection and acknowledging your biases. Many of my favorite games I wouldnt consider the best of the genre due to nostalgia and personal preference.
>>3958781 Top 100 is always pointless because you know half are classics, quarter modern 10s and then you maybe get something interesting left. Their YEARLY awards are more interesting if you ask me.

>PC Port/Remake/Remaster 1 - The Temple of Elemental Evil 2 - Avernum 4: Greed and Glory 3 - Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
>>3963159 problem with their voting system is they replaced "tyranny of the majority" with few high ranking scores supplanting them instead. by all accounts kcd2 should be in the top 5.

But statistically, I am very likely in the top 3% of oldest posters in every thread I post in, across all boards I frequent. Both in terms of my own age (only 34 years old) and in terms of how long I've been posting on 4chan.

>>3965690 >It is literally impossible to treat Dark Souls this way Lol
>ME2 so won't cuck myself out of using fun guns Yes the gun restriction was a design decision I disagreed with. I get the reasoning behind it, but the third game had a better solution.
>>3966909 >BG3 lost to Jagged Alliance 3 I hate BG3 and think it’s an overrated mediocre game plagued by poor decisions during its development. That said, the guy running the site fortified the election by rigging it such that different votes were counted with different weights, in order to ensure that BG3 lost, out of a petty grievance, and not from the choice of the voters. That’s a totally dishonest and pathetic thing to do. JA3 barely even counts as an RPG, and it’s completely obvious to anyone that BG3 was the bigger, more popular, and more influential RPG of the year.
>>3966050 No, because half the users here are annoying, retarded faggots, and in this day and age those sorts of threads tend to attract those people in concentration (much like this thread), thereby ensuring the list will be shit, which is undoubtedly why the RPGCodex one is so dubious, because people with taste and intellect would most certainly rather either actually play the games or discuss them, yep yep.
>>3966992 that's just not true anon and the source spreadsheets are there for anyone to audit
the real reason is simple as balls modern codex is a bunch of [mostly eastern european] trad-right contrarians who need a place to type 'nigger', share hitler or holocaust jokes, and mock trannies they aren't real rpg enthusiasts "the average score" system allows for easy manipulation by a dedicated group with a handful of smurf accounts (sometimes this isn't even required) just spam '1' votes enough times and now a game with twice the votes AND twice the points will lose b/c no one actually bothers to play a game they will likely score as 1 so there are almost no genuine low scores And this didn't start with BG3
The hilarious part is that they know they manipulate the vote, they are literally coordinating, and they still throw celebrations "WE DID IT PLEBBIT!" afterwards. Truly eastern europeans "trads" are never going to get voting
>>3974633 it's obviously a non-serious reply anon >>3974636 discrod-schmischcord what do you disagree with specifically? the spreadsheets and the forum are public you can see 1s anomalies in the votes, and you can find the "we did it plebbit!" styled posts in the 2023 goty results thread

Looks like solasta 2 the bg3 clone is the way to go and gothic remake might be fun. Kinda hoped for a new tactics ogre or fft. I know there are remakes, but new entries would be nice. With today's development times this might take 10 years. We just don't have the tech we had in the 90s where 15 months was a standard development time.

>>3958818 There's the fact that 2's writing, as others have already mentioned, is of varying quality, but even more important than that for me is the scope of the games. Fallout 1 has a more limited scope, more in line with other classic RPGs like Baldur's Gate and PS:T where the side content is structured around the main quest and your character grows in power gradually throughout that quest, it's open world but there's a clear narrative and gameplay structure. On the other hand Fallout 2 feels more like a precursor to modern day open world RPGs, where you have several activity hubs where you do quests and meet factions most of which contain content almost completely unrelated to the main storyline which you may or may not even bother doing (and your character is basically done progressing by the time you've cleared half of those locations), meanwhile the main quest is something that's somewhere in the background which you get around to doing when you're done with fucking around doing side quests. It's a matter of whether your prefer your RPGs to be focused adventures or sandboxes.
>>3979721 Of course you can skip most content, in fact FO2 is one of the RPGs where you can most easily skip the most content, what I'm talking about is the difference between building a main quest and then building an open world around it versus building an open world sandbox first and then having a main quest take place in it. I know it sounds like semantics but the difference in design philosophy is noticeable in the pacing of the game, Fallout 1 may have less content but it's a tighter game.
>>3958818 Funny thing is that around the early years of 4chan to around 2010 (estimating), FO2 was actually being recommended over FO1, simply because it had more content, more playstyles, more items, more choice and consequences, etc.
It was around 2018 (again, estimating) onwards that people started recommending FO1 over 2, because 1 was tonally consistent and didn't have the pop culture memes possibly because they didn't understand it, or the fans now prefer something that is thematically consistent instead of memes
Remember that looter shooter Borderlands game? The complaints against it happened inbetween the shift of recommending one fallout over the other.
>>3958818 FO2 has completely fucked up dogshit skill balance. Sawyer put in incredible effort into making FNV's skills perfectly balanced and useful no matter what you focus on. FO1 had technically a similar problem but the small scale of the adventure made it so you could actually get away with shit builds and still beat the game (my girlfriend played through the game without putting any points in any weapon skills except throwing, she started out with First Aid and Doctor and Throwing tagged but also 10 Charisma so she could eventually get her speech high enough to be relevant too; if she did the same in Fallout 2 the game would be unbeatable without metagaming). FNV limited the amount of skills you could pick without losing anything actually important + the impact of tagging skills at start, so no matter what build you start with you can easily beat the game without doing any gimmicks or metagaming.
Anyone who pretends FO2 is "betterer" than either FO1 or FNV is either a braindamaged zoomie (see any Bethesda subhuman who "goes back to the oldies") or a nostalgia glasses zoomlenial who liked Fallout 2 more as a kid because you could have sex with Bishop's daughter and that farmer slut in it and it had cooler armors and weapons and companions. In every aspect that actually matters, FO1 reigns supreme and every person who worked on Fallout 2 agrees with that and most of them except the ones who died agree FNV is also better than Fallout 2.
This will trigger the left, but it already owned the left.
>>3958804 Seeing DA:O retroactively be considered a classic RPG, a shining example of the good ol' days when RPGs were good, by zoomers who never knew any better has been one of the worst experiences of my life.
>>3979746 Dragon age was released in 2009, the period from 2005-2012 was a draught for crpg's. Same reason kickstarter garbage like wasteland 2 is praised so much.
>>3979729 FO1 was a small and relatively short game compared to FO2. Every single location in FO1 except for the raider camp was crafted to point the player towards the next step towards either the cathedral or the military base. The end of the game basically railroaded the player to become an unstoppable force of destruction, wearing a powered armor and wielding the accelerated plasma rifle. Not much freedom to talk about.
>>3979729 >FO2 was actually being recommended over FO1, simply because it had more content, more playstyles, more items I felt this way back in the day too, about Baldurs Gate 2 as well. Funny how the older I got, I preferred the simplicity of the first games over their expanded sequels.
>>3981037 >I don't think Fallout 2 was more complex than the first game FO2 and BG2 had higher power levels. More levels, stronger items, more spells and abilities, etc.
>>3981681 They didnt really use the tools in bg1 to their full extent. Theres like 2 enemies that even use dimension door in the whole game. Why did they even bother to program it
That said at lrast they even have dimension door. Newer games like pathfinder just program tons of autistic to hit math without actually changing any of the gameplay.
This hobby is for autists and i wish i had never gotten into dnd because theres likr a total of 3 good games total and the fanbase is retarded

>>3983853 I don't visit the forums, but I like reading their reviews and they thought the role playing mechanics took a step back or did not improve enough. If that is supposed to be the pinnacle standard for cRPGs, and I tend to agree it is, then people are right to criticize their top cRPG rankings since games like Jagged Alliance and Diablo exist as top RPG games. And if I am wrong about their critique and they point to other issues, then they are simply out to trash the game because there is hardly nothing wrong with that game and improved from their first game.
>>3975869 Baldur's Gate 3 has better combat and gameplay than almost that entire chart. If only we got more like it rather than completely jank shit with unfun gameplay like Arcanum.
>>3958818 It has far better pacing and a better main quest than it's sequel Fallout 2 has a lot lot lot more to do but I don't blame anyone for getting bored around the time they leave new reno and head south and than theirs like 30 more hours after that lol It also has the exact same leveling system but getting a high level character takes 10 hours in fo1 compared to 40 in 2. Same shit to unlock just more bloated
My top 10 favorite western RPGs 1. Baulders gate 2 2. Fallout 1 3. Divine divinty 4. Pathfinder kingmaker 5. Divinty original sin 2 6. Fallout 2 7. Baulders gate 1 8. Fallout New Vegas 9. Pathfinder wotr 10. Kotr It's a pretty normie list all things considered besides maybe divine divinty which I consider to be the most underrated gem of all time. But I like them, tried most of these games on this list, half of them I wouldn't even consider RPGs like diablo 2? And if we are counting diablo 2 as an RPG it's easily more fun than like 90% of the games in the top 2 rows, why the fuck is it so low? Planescape is really boring Gothic 2 is overrated I just couldn't get into vampire and prob should try again
