Nowhere near monster taming

I played this a couple of years ago through emulation. At the time, I remember enjoying it yet it seems to have failed to leave a lasting impression. I recall the difficulty curve kind of falling apart into an "exploit or perish" situation in the last tenth of everything. Then I did some reading and found out that it was originally going to be a different game that was repurposed into what SE called a "pseudo-sequel" to XII.

I think they should try again but knowing what the game will be from start, and I get the impression that it would map better onto the Dragon Quest franchise than Final Fantasy.
