It's divisive because a lot of english-only piggies went into it expecting another game with the tone of Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia, and they were disappointed when they got hit with the more shoujo-ish pastel Inomata Team Destiny vibes.
I love it. The last truly great Tales game.

Damn I love how the visuals look in vesperia. I can't believe namco abandoned whatever gfx engine they used for vesperia for the eye cancer shit they've been using since xillia. I'm enjoying berseria right now but the graphics are fucking horrible. They feel cheap like an idea factory game or something.

People hate on vesperias story but I think it's actually pretty good. Certain opinions just spring up on the internet sometimes and then people bandwagon on it. Yuri starts as a vigilante and by the end he's at the other end of that blade of vengeance it's great stuff. And I love duke and how the story resolves itself without killing him or throwing him under the bus. They fight and then come to an understanding which was neat.
