Rewrite from zero. As much as I make fun of the authors who do it, I see no other way for PoMA to be good. The fact that Nicky didn't have any idea for the plot until he was years in development is painfully obvious but instead of fixing it, he wastes time and effort on rebalancing a game that is not even meant to be played without a cheat mode. So, wipe it to zero, design the system that can be built on when needed instead of gutting it every season and write the plot with a clear plan.

Yes in that the game works on critical checks now, so in vast majority of scenarios you can either fail, pass a check and everything goes as normal or crush a check and the story reflects you effortlessly passing it.
A difference between punching a guy and breaking your wrist, knocking him back for the fight to continue or caving his skull in and instantly ending the fight.

No in that both exp and qi economy are royally fucked and even on the easiest difficulty you are sweating every expense. So the end result is people maximize the money they earn to immediately spend it all in part 2 of the game on the cheapest robe you can buy. You then turn that robe into qi from meditate menu so you can go back to the shop and do it again. Again and again tens, hundreds of times so that you can more or less have a fraction of the human rights someone using a console to max out his stats has.
If you know what you are doing, it's "easy" to make a broken character that shits on everyone with the story reflecting that but it's unimaginably tedious.

The weirder thing is that even after he appears to fix the system, he always finds a way to make it worse.
The Muchen fight is perhaps the most clear example. Even if it is very good, winning it on mortal difficulty is just not viable because the checks are absurdly high and the fight goes on forever so you will eventually run out of resources unless you really minimax for it, but lowering the difficulty just makes it a cakewalk and takes away the fun. The exponential cost of upgrading stats is also insurmountable after a while.

That's why I mentioned porting it to a real engine earlier. IF is just ill designed for more complex fights. In typical ARPGs if the enemy is stronger than you, you can play better, react faster or maybe even flee and kite. In typical turn based RPGs you should be able to overprepare before a difficult encounter, or farm resources and XP in the worst case. In IFs you can't do either and the game forces you to follow the predetermined path and pick one of a small number of possible actions, and then punishes you hard for failing.
The only IF game that is being widely praised for the mechanics is Aura Clash, and that's because Cultivator-anon not only keeps to his initial design while enhancing it with each update, but also keeps the game from going too hard on your ass.
Funny thing is he was a newfag who discovered these games after our threads were already long established and the same newfag managed to avoid every pitfall in the IF design.

Mystic: the only piece of clothing that grants useful bonuses for non-kuron/non-female PCs (+1 soul and insight)
Cursed: a consumable scroll, you can use in the stallion trial to kill that octopus and get a treasure (3100 AP)
Bladed: a samurai bodyguard for you tavern. Does nothing yet, might prevent some deaths later, who knows?
The clothing should be useful for most characters, the samurai can either turn out to be the best or the most useless, the blessing and the scroll are both single-use get out of jail free cards like TLD.
