Indie Jarpigs (and others) I have played and my thoughts on them:
>Crystal Project
Fine. The exploration really stole the show and the aggro-based combat was interesting, at least. There was no story worth critiquing, which puts it above several others in the list. I am interested in the sequel.
Worth playing? If you're a big job system guy.
>Chained Echoes
A few interesting ideas (the overdrive[?] meter, the achievement-based levels) combined with dogshit systems (whatever the fucking the gems were). Same exact bit goes for the story, though it weighed much heavier on the shit side.
Worth playing? If you're really jonesing for something, I guess.
>Sea of Stars
It's just so fucking boring. Echoes is a slog but at least the story is a trainwreck in motion. This is JUST a slog which is so much worse.
Worth playing? Fuck no.
>Monster Sanctuary
I just really got into the team building aspect of this one. One of the only monster collectors I've really gotten into outside of the big two. I liked the metroidvania half of the game, that definitely helped.
Worth playing? If you like monster collectors.
>Dream Tactics
Strategy, but a small party one. It's a card-based game so if you hate that, ignore it. If you don't mind that, I found it quite enjoyable. Just wish you could have a bigger party, more than anything.
Worth playing? As long as you can stomach cards.
>Cosmic Star Heroine
Genuinely forgot this one which is unfortunate because it's pretty well polished. Loved the devs earlier games (Breath of Death, Cthulu Saves the World) and this one I enjoyed all the same.
Worth playing? Definitely.
>Secrets of Grindea
Ending with an action RPG. I think I loved this game, genuinely. My biggest qualm is the (true) final boss falls into the 'early access overtuning' trap, if you catch my meaning. Otherwise, the moment to moment gameplay kept me around enough to actually get to that true final boss.
Worth playing? For sure, yeah.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Looking forward to:
>Thermocline
Horror with jarpig combat is crazy rare and the spritework looks good so looking forward to it
>Full Circle
On one hand i get a jrpg with good looking combat but on the other hand character potraits are all AIslop and current playable demo is bugfest. Likely skipping this but small part of me still thinks full release going to be okay
>Lie of Caelum
Waifus and mechas in jrpg so insta-wishlist please be good
>Stratagem Lost
Artstyle looks interesting but part of me predicts tumblr crap content, gonna try the demo later
>Cardaire Eternal Aces
Played the first game when i was bored it was meh but also a something that might be good with a sequel
>The Grey Elegy
Looks good i just hope its not like I Am Setsuna where almost entire game is basicly snowfield

>its Spark Ignite not Full Circle i'm blind
It's decent for what it is. I don't really care about AI portraits. The main downside is how short it is. Sort of starts to get interesting and then it just ends. Also really weird that almost all sound effects are missing. I think they're working on that though.

for the event showcase the only upcoming one i'm actively looking forward to is the cardaire sequel
i'll probably end up getting crystal project 2 at some point as well even if i'm not really that excited about it

False Skies was fun. Lots of exploration with a multi-class Job system.
Shadows of Adam is a mostly linear jRPG-inspired western RPG. The most exceptional aspect to point out is that the devs made their own PDF strategy guide in the style of older Player's Guides.

Zeboyd dudes remade (yes, a full remake including graphical overhaul) Breath of Death VII. You can still grab it for dirt cheap.
>>3992190
You are the first person I've met who has played Cardaire. Yeah it was fun for a short little singleplayer card game.

Memorable ones I've played:
>Beastieball
PokeClone that turns volleyball into a turn based RPG. Has mechanics like passing and serve translated into TB combat. Personally this one feels the most unique compared to Monster Sanctuary, Coromon, Cassette Beasts in terms of everything (ost, combat, worldbuilding). Artstyle and certain characters can be a bit woke but I've seen much worse.
>Our Adventurer's Guild
FFT style combat (without facing) and quest-based progression similar to FFTA. Has job system, although not multi-classing.
>Horizon's Gate
Open-world FFT-style combat with flat maps. Incredible mod support by one particular guy named Prominence, easily expanding the kinda-barren base game, potentially tripling the playtime.
>Crystal Project
Literally a job system simulator RPG with dark souls level of environmental storytelling. Also has a frustrating platforming that has nothing to do with the premise.
I won't say it's a JRPG per se and everyone who recs it to people looking for one deserve to be ostracized.
>Chained Echoes
The best indie throwback JRPG so far. From the UI, the combat, the ost feels brand new. Sure it plays like a less robust FFX but it still does it very well. Story aping Xenogears also make it unique.
>Sea of Stars(slop)
If you have a hard-on toward Octopath break systems and chrono trigger novel dual techs you might like it. And the puzzles are really surface-level. Story is mediocre too.
Looking forward for a potential sequel to Horizon's gate.

Some stuff I've played recently:
>Whispers in the Moss
A full on traditional JRPG made in ANSI-style. Surprisingly charming.
>Ark's Wonder Dungeon
MS-paint style JRPG roguelite. There's been a number of these attempts made in RPG Maker, but I think this is the best of the bunch and the gameplay comes together really well.
>8-Bit Adventures 2
One of the worst names for an RPG I've seen. It sounds like a generic slop title, but it's actually a really well done and drawn traditional JRPG.
>Crystal Project (FF overhaul)
I liked the original game's exploration and the way it functioned almost like a Metroid title, but the jobs were kind of ass. The FF overhaul fixes my issues.

>What are some underrated indie JRPG gems?
Why would anything like that exist? Any indie that decides to "make a JRPG" is going to have garbage taste and judgement in how to go about gameplay by default for even thinking that's a good idea. They're all going to lack the budget to do anything cinematic, and anything actually somehow decent is going to be well known at this point.

lol but a lot of them are STILL forcing it to be cinematic. some do it better than others and there are skip options but it can be overwhelming, especially on replays. I haven't played many but Pokemon fangames tend do it all the time and Vampires Dawn prides itself in having hour long prologues and hallway sections.

a shame there is no pithy term for "contemporary western made indie reference heavy attempted japanese-style light rpg that will inevitably cause everyone in thread to accuse each other of being shills"
pic related: the villain in most of them
