What are the prettiest looking 2d rts games in your opinion (or just strategy games in general)?
Why don't developers go back to 2d, it's better for strategy games
I like Twisted Insurrection, Anno 1503, SunAge, AoE DE, and Desert Law (the game is not great but it looks like a crpg, like Fallout II or Planescape, cool visuals)

CulturesNation is quite cute. It's standalone mod of 2000 game Cultures. But I think there is only Polish version.

Indie developers are still making retro 2d games, and I think that's cool
This one is "Fertile Crescent", a decent age of empires clone
This one looks fun too.

You are the only person besides me that played it. Spent more than a decade on imageboards and have never anybody else mention it. Very pretty graphics indeed, although the campaign was a bit subpar. The ending is also extremely anticlimatic.

>Cheeselords
I swear on me mum some of these devs just throw dildos at a wall with names like VICE and pick the most retarded and unappealing and nonsensical combinations. They are ensuring total marketing and sale failure by being so fucking retarded and uncaring about optics.
How is RTS supposed to ever re-emerge when you have these clowns naming their games CHEESELORDS? How about SMEGMA MASTERS? Maybe LETTUCE COMBATANTS? Or CALI WALI HOT FRANK? Nothing says "RTS" like CALI WALI HOT FRANK

Maybe AoE2.
Starcraft and Red Alert are nice looking, but not super pretty. There are screenshots of aoe2 where it just punches solidly above them, and even in normal play the bases tend to look pretty good, like if you took a random base from a booming competitive game, and then added in some roads, trees and bushes it would look very pretty.
>(or just strategy games in general)?
homm2, songs of conquest, age of wonders are the first that come to mind, but it's probably Anno

I forgot to mention the standalone mod/remake is open source, made by community. There should be English language option too. Download link to latest 1.3.1 version is kinda hidden, but I found it:

>Why don't developers go back to 2d, it's better for strategy games
The majority of consumers consider 2d to be strictly worse than 3d hence why it's limited to mostly niche indie games. 2D art can also be a lot more expensive to make.

I remember reading a review of it in a gaming magazine when it came out, and they were criticizing the graphics for being outdated due to being 2D instead of 3D.
Even back then I thought that was crazy.
Anyways maybe this is cheating, but Heroes of Annihilated Empires uses 2D sprites for the units and buildings at least, and looks amazing.

It’s a good game, and it really doesn’t look bad overall. Except for the portraits... what were they thinking? They look awful and completely ruin the game visually.

We really need to lower the bump limit and max number of threads on this board so conversations aren't so drawn out.
We don't need 10 pages of threads, 5 is enough.

That's nonsense, you just aren't used to slow boards. Not every board has to be the same, where everything dies in days and everybody just repeats themselves ad infinitum. What's the benefit of this? It's not like as if anything real would change.
